Top breba producers are desert king, Gillette, barbillone, english brown turkey California brown turkey, san antonio, violet de bordeaux, corkys honey delight, fillaciano bianco, fiarone di ruvo, grantham royal, de tres esplaits, lampiera preta, gentile bianco, san miro piro, nebo/teramo unknown, italian honey/blanche and adler off the top of my head. Many other varieties produce like one to three per branch and are great but lack the volume of the crop the ones i listed produce to really make them worthy of space in ground if nain crop is too late to ripen. Another strategy is to tip prune some if these lesser producing varieties in spring retarding growth and allowing brebas to grow as the tree needs to push out new growth points and it delays the vigorous spring growth

I have the "english" brown turkey and find that I can NOT eat the maincrop figs , now Nov and the tree is covered with them, why not? , because they give me the RUNS within a half hour of eating . I think it is maily from the skin - not certain if I really want to find out !

Ross, good to hear that you're finally into brebas. A nice crop for short season climates (Breba-land). You forgot to mention (English) Brown Turkey as THE classic and mass breba producer!

I have 3 brown turkey trees grown from seed which grew to 5 foot within 6 months inside a greenhouse, in blue Lowes containers. Waiting for 1st breba harvest next year.

Lol. Im in 9b and 1 of my fig trees has put on several new branches and even a new 3 foot tall "trunk" growing beside the original. New figs are already forming. Some of my new cuttings have already grown 2 feet. Mine started waking up around feb.

Please try to pronounce the fig tree names more clearly. I often have to backtrack “several” times to get the name and sometimes I don’t get it. Thank you very much Ross. Happy figging.

I believe Unknown Pastiliere produces breba figs, which fall off, and then the main crop only stays on if caprified. I think they fall off because the breba figs form before the wasps are active.

Ross, I have a question, that I can't find any info online, can you help ? I have some figs that I rooted this spring from cuttings. Some have like 5 or 6 new shoots coming off the new cutting. Is it best to remove some, to send more energy to 1 or 2 main shoots , or to leave alone for the first year, then prune ? Thanks

Hi Ross, I've been wondering for a while what a breba fig is and what isn't. I find it reassuring to see that it's not so clear cut for others to define a breba fig either. For me, however, a maincrop fig from the previous year that just hasn't developed is not a breba fig. I would define a fig as a breba if it is produced on a node that also produced a maincrob fig on the same node in the previous year. The fact that breba and maincrop figs can be very different supports the thesis. If figs produce breba figs one season, even though the strain usually doesn't, then it's probably from an overwintered maincrop bud. ...Btw, my Green Michurinska also produces spring figs ;)

Hey Ross! Thanks so much for the videos as always! Just to clarify, figs never form on older 3 year old wood correct? So for my figs in the ground in my greenhouse, I'll cut them back each year to maybe a foot or two?
