Breeding season is here! We've got a group of about 40 cows and heifers that we set up to artificially inseminate. This is a great way to introduce some new, quality genetics into our herd without spending a fortune on a bull. It also is a great way to narrow down your calving season window. Straws of semen can typically be purchased for about $25-$50/straw. There are a few different procedures that you can follow, but the one we go by is listed below.
Day 1: Insert CIDR (Controlled Internal Drug Release) in back of cow. Give a shot of Factrel (synthetic GnRH)
Day 7: Remove CIDR and give shot of Lutalyse. Apply heat patch
Day 9-11: Heat detect and breed/Second shot of Factrel (helps release egg if not already released)
Day 12: Place cleanup bull in pasture
We have purchased semen off 2 bulls for Artificial Insemination
SAV Rainfall
Mead Magnitude (sexed heifer semen)
Special thanks to Cole Gibbs for breeding our cows and heifers. .

Ben I've been cutting and raking hay for a Black Simmental breeder and today I helped him with 5 cows he put the cidrs in and I gave the shot. These cows are embryo recipient cows. I had not seen this done till today. Thank you for another excellent video

Thats awesome! I have never seen that in person before. We are hoping to do some embryo transplants eventually. Hope y’all have good results!

Farmer Hunt - So much countryside in the US, so much here that I shall never see in our counties, only ever see it on RU-vid or Google Maps. Bit cloudy here in London 28/6/20, 19C, been very windy last few days, had lots of sunshine ☀️ v hot, it will come back 29C again 🇬🇧.

There is definitely a lot of pretty countryside here. Lots that I will probably never even see myself. Sounds like y’all have had some nice temps lately. It’s pushing 90 F today. Summer is here. I prefer the heat over the cold though.

Good to hear all the little details on how to do it correctly. I like to know what you are thinking while you go through the process.

Thanks for watching! We will have more artificial insemination videos towards the end of this year. We are getting better and better with out process ( we think). I actually went to a training back in March so hopefully ill be ready to breed this fall.

Pretty neat! I'm sure he could probably teach me a thing or two. I am still learning as I go. We bred another group this past May. There are three different videos for it. Video 1 was about inserting the CIDRs, Video 2 was removing the CIDRs and getting prepped for breeding, and Video 3 covered the actual breeding. My cousin Eric actually did the breeding that round. I We did all the CIDR work ourselves. I was supposed to be trained to AI in March of this year but the corona virus messed up those plans. Maybe next year...

Arthur Dewith Yes it’s very nice when you have a real tight calving window. Makes it easier to keep everything tagged and worked. Also easier to monitor fertility and things like that when you know for sure when a cow should be calving.

Can i ask what the drug is that you are injecting after AI to aid ovulation? Is it GnRH?
@FarmerHunt
@FarmerHunt 3 года назад
Yes, we use Factrel. It helps release the egg if it has not already been released.

What brand of heat patch?
@FarmerHunt
@FarmerHunt 3 года назад
We always use estrotect. Here is a link for them. amzn.to/38miGn0 We have always had good luck with them. The main thing to remember is make sure to clean the area before applying the heat patch.
