Breeding season is here! We've got a group of about 40 cows and heifers that we set up to artificially inseminate. This is a great way to introduce some new, quality genetics into our herd without spending a fortune on a bull. It also is a great way to narrow down your calving season window. Straws of semen can typically be purchased for about $25-$50/straw. There are a few different procedures that you can follow, but the one we go by is listed below.
Day 1: Insert CIDR (Controlled Internal Drug Release) in back of cow. Give a shot of Factrel (synthetic GnRH)
Day 7: Remove CIDR and give shot of Lutalyse. Apply heat patch
Day 9-11: Heat detect and breed/Second shot of Factrel (helps release egg if not already released)
Day 12: Place cleanup bull in pasture
We have purchased semen off 2 bulls for Artificial Insemination
SAV Rainfall
Mead Magnitude (sexed heifer semen)
Special thanks to Cole Gibbs for breeding our cows and heifers. .
