Cool tubs. I breed my own mice and rats. I heard stories from guys in my area saying I’ll have problems being successful at breeding rats and good luck on mice. So I accepted the challenge. I lucked into someone getting out rat breeding. I got a couple DIY rat racks with cement mixing tubs in them. They also had one mouse rack with FB sm tubs. Bought them all at same time and got a smoking deal on them cause they wanted them gone. FB tubs alone were worth the money I spent. I had issues finding sellers to sell me female rats or female mice. They just wouldn’t sell them cause they don’t want another person breeding rats or mice. I went to a reptile show. I saw some weened rats and hopper mice for sale. I asked any of them females. He said I’m sure some are but I’m not sexing them for you. I needed a bunch to feed my snakes anyways so I bought all 40 rats and 20 mice he had. I put them in rack system let them grow up some till I could see which were males and females. I put one male with 3 females. Fed off all the rest of the males. Over time and they started producing. I saved more females and a a few males till I filled all my racks. I know have 15 rat colonies and 9 mice colonies. I produce a bunch of rats and mice. I feed 60 adult ,15 juvenile and 36 baby pythons ( had 65 earlier this year) 3 adult corn snakes,2 Texas leucitic rat snakes and 12 corn snake babies ( had 60+ corn snake babies earlier this year) each week. So yes I’ve become pretty good at rat and mice breeding. The guys that told me I was going to have issues still can’t believe I’m producing so many. Biggest thing I notice is keeping tubs clean and feeding them good they will produce for you. With the amount I’m breeding I can’t afford Mazuri rat food. Feed stores in my area don’t sell it. I go through 50 + lbs a week. I found a sow gestation feed that has as much protein as mazuri. Rats and mice love it. I also give them snacks. Fresh veggies,Dog food, dried macaroni, roasted unsalted peanuts with and without shell and dig biscuits. Adult rats will take peanut out my hands to eat. As for tubs bedding. I use horse pellets, pine bedding( white bag for rats and yellow bag for mice) and horse stall refresher from tractor supply. Sorry I made such a long post. I truly enjoy breeding rats and mice as I do producing snakes. I know my snakes are getting very healthy rats and mice.

That's great that you enjoy breeding the rodents and its working out for you. I have 3 bins 1 male 3 females in each and it works out nice. I started with 4-5 females per male but it wasn't a good idea as they dirty the bin too fast. Cutting back helps alot with cleaning and odor. I couldn't breed rodents on a large scale it's too much work for me since I have lots of snakes aswell.

@@cloudcolubrids4603 mice dirty the bins and smell up the area twice as fast as rats do. It is a lot of work breeding the rodents and snakes. I hit a point to where it made better business sense too breed my own. I also had the space to do it.

I breed mice I have 20 colonies. I like to put older with younger females to reduce cannibalism so I slowly retire old females to always have at least one experienced female in there. I also go to a feed store to get mazuri food it saves a lot on shipping usually it’s about $29 for a 50lb bag. I then use pellet bedding from tractor supply it’s $5 for a big bag and I use the yellow bag of fine kiln dried pine shavings from tractor supply again $5 it saves a lot of money and I haven’t noticed any adverse effects on my mice since switching to pine a year ago.

Thanks for the feedback and great info. I may have to order mines online becuase I located 2 feed stores went there and both didnt carry what I needed. I plan to max out at 4 colonies so 50 lb bags should last me a very long time. I have heard pine can be bad for rodents and snakes but many rodent breeders including yourself seem to like using it with no negative effects so ill look into switching. You know dr internet sometimes feeds us bad information. Thanks again for all the information and be safe

@@theowias3 very interesting. So quails are easy to breed? I dont use them but that would be great to add variety down the road. Do the bulls prefer to eat one over the other or they just strike at everything?

@jesus cabrera thanks, I made my first rack in 2019 for $half the price of what it cost now. I still belive its cheaper to make your own if your making a bigger rack as you can customize it and most pre made racks don't hold that many bins. I need to build another so I'll price it soon.

How many rats are you able to produce from these bins. I’m thinking about building a wood rack but these look easier but more expensive

Hard to say I only have 1 bin with asf rats and the rest mice. The production would be similar to a wooden rack per bin but with a rack you can hold alot more rodents and produce a higher amount

Do you have any idea how to stop mice from eating their babies? I've had 6 pairs of females and all of them ate their babies.
@cloudcolubrids4603
@cloudcolubrids4603 3 года назад
Theres a few reasons for this. The easy ones are lack of food make sure they have enough food another is keep them in a somewhat quiet area not where people are constantly making alot of noise since they get stressed or fear then resort to eating the pinkies. The most common reason is a new mother tends to do this the first time she has pinkies but within a few litters she stops eating them. Sometimes a new mother thinks she cant take care of all the baies or dosnt realize there not food lol ive heard many breeders say this happens sometimes with first time rodent moms and then they just stop eating them and all is good. All of mines never ate their pinkies until today one of my first time mothers ate 1 and i pulled out the pinkies and froze them for my snakes before she ate them all...by next litter i have to watch her and make sure she dosnt do it again. Let me know if this continues or if you notice they stop eating the babies...

Do you have any issues with the smell?
@cloudcolubrids4603
@cloudcolubrids4603 3 года назад
With 1 bin holding 1 male 3 females no issues with smell. Now I have 3 bins with lots of babies and I do smell them when entering the room. I was changing bedding once a month but now will start doing full cleanings every 14days and see how it goes. The females dont cuase odors its the males urine that produces the foul smell. I have been growing the pinkies to full mice to hold for my larger snakes and holdback females for my new bin and having all those may also add to tge smell so if your using the pinkies before they become full grown mice that will reduce smell aswell. I will do an update video on how the smell is after a few weeks of cleaning the bins more frequently.
