The Brellas had great concept, and were set to be one of the most powerful weapon classes. However, due to many flaws, they would never live up to their potential. This video will give you the full history of the Brellas, where they started, and where they are now.
Big thanks to SlackerT21 for helping me research this video!

This was really interesting, I never really paid attention to brellas in Splatoon 2 so I never knew that the original one was actually good early on. Crazy that they just took it out back and splatted it for no apparent reason... The damage nerf especially hurts in Splatoon 3 where you have to fight a lot of HP specials. Also I'd love to see more videos in this format, it's really interesting and entertaining! (also i love the usage of splat 1 music its such a good soundtrack)

Thank you so much! Honestly, I don't know why they destroyed brellas, but Nintendo made many weird choices with Splatoon 2. My favorite one was turning bubbler, a special that guaranteed a win in any engagement, into ink armor, a special almost guaranteed a team wipe :D

@@_pancakes1734 I… anyway it was stated in video that ink armour is one of the best specials in the game, so that it is heavily implied to be that the team with armour is the ones still living in the encounter. It’s a special well known for winning fights while also being spammed so it’s uptime was insane and had to be nerfed many times for different weapons. Nothing in their phrasing implied that you were disadvantaged by using it whatsoever.

The brella is easily In my opinion the most unique and interesting weapon with a clear and effective role, and it hurts me to see them fall into obscurity. Especially since I think we need them to make a come back considering that long range back liners are running a muck in online thanks to the map design and I think brellas need to come in to actually be an answer to those weapons. If I were to buff them I would increase their opening speed of their shield meaning they and block attacks more effectively. Also they need to sort out the bugs that the class is plagued with in splatoon 3. Good vid!

I still contend that brellas would be 10000% cooler if there was an option to hold them vertically, like an actual umbrella to help block aerial attacks like Tenta Missiles and Ink storm! Obviously the biggest helper for them would be for Splatoon to have a higher tick rate, so that hits would register faster and more accurately, so the shield would actually work consistently, but adding a new mode of function could reinvigorate the weapon throughout the community!

I was actually pretty good with undercover brella in splat2. The torpedo subweapon imo made it pretty easy to get kills in combination with your brella shield up. Also it was good at painting and could get ink armor up for the team. If they bring an undercover brella varient to splat3, I hope it gets torpedo and tenticooler.

Camo tenta is underrated. Instead of pure support, it’s an aggro frontliner that can protect itself by setting up ink mines to cover its back while keeping its huge canopy to cover the front. Ultra Stamp is there for when multiple enemies rush you down and get in your face. It adds a bit of order to chaotic modes like Clam Blitz where you don’t know where enemies are lurking

I loved the brella in splatoon 2, probably my most used weapon in over 1000 hours of playing. But in splatoon 3? Everything seems like it does SO MUCH damage. I lt feels like what the undercover felt like in splatoon 2. I still use the tenta brella, but the other 2 feel so weak just because of how common high damage weapons and specials are. And, there are now many better options for protection such as big bubbler, and the ink vac.

I think that balancing the concept of having a shield is definitely tricky and why the devs are so cautious of letting them be good for fear of bringing down the experience for any player not using them. On the other hand, I think it plays into the fear/general sentiment people have that weapons other than shooters getting to be strong meta contenders, and having to play around them, is a bad thing for the game. On top of reverting the nerfs they got, it feels like they just need to give these weapons better kits so they can stand up to other strong meta contenders. Undercover was dead on arrival in this game for repeating 2's launch kit, Brella being stuck with its terrible ink efficiency and getting a paint focused kit doesn't help it compete at all offensively, and Tenta is the most usable of the three , but Ink Vac proved to be not as useful as people were hoping on it. For Tenta, like you said in the video, Big Bubbler would probably be the best possible special for it, and while the devs really want it to have a deployable sub, giving it burst bomb (like in the Perfect Kits video ProChara made) it could be quite versatile in combat. As for Splat Brella, giving it some kind of bomb like the Sorella kit (they didn't even give it a third kit in 3 which goes to show how little they care about it) would go a long way after the ink consumption nerf being reverted, not sure about the special but really it could go a lot of ways in being better than Triple Ink Strike, such as the Vac (again from ProChara's video) or maybe Booyah Bomb since that gives great survivability, displacement, and paints, all things the Brella wants. Lastly for Undercover, I don't know what special it needs to live up to the viability that Kensa had since its whole niche was spamming the best special in the game and there's nothing comparable in 3. More than anything this weapon NEEDS an offensive bomb, whether it be burst or torpedo or even splat bomb. I feel like Crab Tank would be a good pair for it to bolster its weak offense and short range, while boosting its ability to stall which is what it needs to be viable with its weak damage and shield. Lastly, they need to figure out how to make them less buggy and less crap in the online ecosystem of Nintendo Online so that getting shot through the shield isn't a common occurrence. Having to fight internet and bugs on an already difficult class just makes them less worth it and less strong than they already are. At the bare minimum they really need those 2 buffs partially or fully reverted because as it stands they can easily run out of ink, struggle to confirm kills, and don't paint too well, meaning they have only the shield really going for them, and all the shield leaves them with is getting shot through it or weird bugs with deploying them. And for a weapon class with only 3 types, being shoved to the bottom half of tier lists really hurts them compared to other weapons classes which are more plentiful and usually have at least one stand-out weapon that does well in the meta, even if others aren't as good.
@Fridgemasters

god this is so true, the brella’s main gimmick itself is what keeps balance devs from making it actually a viable weapon in terms of keeping itself alive in most situations. but since the shield is so bugged rn we basically just have a weaker slosher

Oh, brella. My favorite class. I started seriously playing tent after using it as a joke just after the changes to its shield mechanics, when it was still considered awful (release tent was absolute trash). I started playing it in low-level competitive and completely fell in love with the weapon, which I would go on to main until the end of Splatoon 2’s lifespan. I wasn’t much of a splat brella player in 2, but it’s become one of my favorite weapons in 3 since I picked it up after watching ProChara play it towards the end of 2. I firmly believe that splat brella is by far the best main weapon in the class, even after all of the nerfs. It’s just held back by some of the fakest kits imaginable. Undercover is nifty. It’s also the worst weapon. Period. I have so much to say about brella as a class and its current state. Tent has always been bad at fighting for itself, but it used to make up for that in supporting utility power. Once upon a time, the tent shield was virtually indestructible and could be used to hard force your team into an area, even in higher levels of play. Yet, today, a large number of main weapons can just solo it. Every roller except dynamo (realistically), every charger, both splatanas and stringers, bloblobber, tri-slosher… the list goes on. It’s much worse in Splatoon 3, because the weapon diversity has increased drastically and the brella class inherently loses to every other class that isn’t shooter or dualie. On top of that, the removal of main power up leaves us with no options to make shields actually survive damage. Special weapons were also made to instantly destroy brella shields, but I actually think this is a good thing. If my opponent wants to blow one of their trizooka shots on my tent shield, it should break. If they rush me down with an ultra stamp or run me over with a reefslider, I shouldn’t be able to block that. On top of that, tent has ink vac, which is the *perfect* special for it. It gives the tent player counterplay to enemy specials, which promotes a healthy gameplay loop in which both sides get to take initiative and play around one another. *However.* There are some special weapon interactions with brellas that I do not agree with at all. Ink storm deals an absurd amount of dps to brellas, which is just silly for obvious reasons. Crab tank’s ball form instantly destroys brella shields on contact, an interaction that they INTENTIONALLY REMOVED in the last game. A brella canopy will also simply cease existing if it ever comes into contact with an enemy big bubbler or the rainmaker shield. This is just dumb. The brella *should* either a). Bounce off of barriers like it does when hitting a wall, b). Trade its health with the barrier like it does with splash wall and enemy brellas, or c). In the case of big bubbler, pass through the barrier, as the brella is not ink, but a solid object. Main and certain sub weapons deal too much damage to brella shields. The only main weapons that should be able to realistically solo a tent shield are hydra, e-liter, goo tuber, and both splatanas and dynamo roller if they get in melee range. I think all lethal bombs should have their damage to brellas toned back slightly, given how common and easy to output they are. Fizzy bomb, in particular, is by far the worst offender of sub weapons against brellas. A charged fizzy bomb will destroy an entire splat brella shield and over half of a tent shield if it hasn’t been launched. Why. No single sub weapon should invalidate an entire main weapon. That’s just silly. Outside of all that, I think your ideas for brella buffs are pretty spot-on. Undercover really just needs playable stats. Splat brella used to be a very strong weapon-revert it and give it a real kit, and you’ve got a potential top tier on your hands. Tent would benefit a lot from more damage per shot and less lag frames on its attacks-to give some numbers, the weapon has 20 startup frames before firing a shot when coming out of the ink, and cannot utilize squid form or a sub weapon for an additional 40 frames after the shot is fired. This means that exiting the ink, firing one shot, and re-entering the ink takes an *entire second.* Honestly, though, I think this is fine, as long as the weapon actually does what it’s supposed to do. Globally nerf main weapon damage to brellas (except shooters and dualies, those are fine as is), nerf bomb damage to brellas, and give the tent its 100 lost hp back, and you’ve got a strong and healthy weapon that I would be plenty satisfied with. Man, I’ve been here a while. Chances are, you have too if you’re reading this. Thanks for sticking around through my extremely long and horribly disjointed brella rant. At the end of the day, I still love this weapon class to death and I just wish it would get some justice. Sincerely, A very distressed and sad brella main

I like the undercover brella and its concept, even more so in Splatoon 3, but I will say it's definitely more of a skill check weapon then anything, as if you're a good player and fighting a less skilled player you stand a good chance of winning the engagement, heck even 2v1's can be won fairly often in such situations, but once you face a player of an equal or greater skill level the weapon just doesn't perform very well any longer, still a very fun weapon to take into the casual splatfest match making I find.

I am an Undercover Brella user in Splatoon 3 and I'm currently trying to get the 5 star badge for this weapon. This weapon has an interesting loadout that has some potential in my opinion. The way I've been using it relies more on the subweapon of the undercover brella, the ink mines. Alone the ink mines can do 35 to 45 damage to a enemy player and marks them to your teammates. This with the undercover brellas shield and limited range makes it a decent close to mid range weapon. My best strategy for this weapon so far is to essentially lure people into the mine then use the undercover brella to finish the job. Whenever I see someone I could potentially get into a fight with a leave a mine somewhere behind the battle area that I can run to. If the enemy player breaks my brella shield then I retreat past the mine and wait for them to trip the mine then I use the undercover brella to finish them off if the mine didn't. I usually always have one ink mine that I can use anytime for this to work but you can use both of them if you are so inclined. For long range weapons like chargers the undercover brella is not great against. Usually the undercover brella doesn't have enough range to even try and get a ranged weapon user but the special of the undercover brella, the reefslider, can help with that in some situations. If you are in a situation where you have a straight unblocked access to the ranged weapon user on the battle field then the reefslider can be used to make it a more fair fight or even end the fight because the reefslider splatted them. The reefslider can be very frustrating to use and can get you killed if used improperly so be aware of that regardless of whether you are using it with the undercover brella or any other weapon that has this special. One last mote for the undercover brella specifically against e-liter users. The undercover brella is great for pissing e-liter users off because they have to use one of their shots just on the shield then another to kill the undercover brella user. Now if there is anything to know about the e-liter its that their shots take quite a bit to charge up. So wasting one of those precious shots on just a shield is a good way to annoy them. Now I should mention that I do not use the undercover brella in most ranked modes. I use it in splat zones and it can do pretty good on there. For other ranked modes it usually is more of a pain in the ass to use effectively. Tower Control it can be utilized in a somewhat useful manner if the undercover brella user can stay on the tower and keep ink mines on the tower as well. But usually in Tower Control the undercover brella's shield breaks too fast and if someone ambushes you on the tower before you get a chance to put mines down you are screwed. I personally don't use it in tower control too often because ranged weapons do much better here and weapons with the big bubbler special can hold the tower down much better than an undercover brella ever could. I don't use the undercover brella in rainmaker or clam blitz. For rain maker its not great for popping the rainmaker shield and since you have to charge the enemy team it makes the ink mines much harder to use effectively. For clam blitz the undercover brella doesn't provide enough protection to let your teammates throw clams in the clam basket and its mobility isn't great for throwing clams in yourself. I personally really like the undercover brella despite its flaws and I don't think its as bad as some make it out to be. Is it the best of the brellas? I do not know since I haven't used the brellas as extensively as this one but I do think it has some potential and uses. If you have any other undercover brella strategies that work well feel free to let me know.

Undercover brella requires ink resistance to take advantage of it's strengths to the fullest, because of enemy floor ink. It will find it's way under the shield in the middle of a fight. If your inkling spends enough time in enemy ink and they'll have taken 40 damage and be at 60 hp and with movement penalties to boot, so when the enemy eventually breaks your shield, it's an easy splat. with ink resistance the cap can be taken from 40 down to 33 with one main, 28 from enemy ink with 2 mains, and 25 with 3 20 with a pure set, Ink resistance also prevents damage and movement penalties from enemy ink for longer between shots, 1 main = 20 frames, 2 mains = 28 frames, 3 = 33, pure = 39.

With the Splat Brella, The primary thing that has to be done is to buff the damage back or at least to 17. Before the nerf to 16.2 damage, one pellet with a direct hit would kill. The nerf made brellas very inconsistent because they couldn’t do that anymore. To rub salt into the wound, damage taken from entering enemy ink maxes at 18, which means brella STILL can’t kill in one shot then.

the central gimmick of the brellas is that they are a shield. I think an interesting change would be to nerf a lot the damage they deal and buff significantly the amount of damage they can take (and the hurtbox of the shield) and make them paint more area per shot. greatly reducing his offensive abilities and exaggerating his support abilities would make this class very interesting and useful to use. I always thought that this would be THE "archetype" of brellas, but they have a bit of everything and fail miserably at all of them :(

I just want the Splat Brella to have no damage falloff and something to make the 2 shot more reliable. It's sad how RNG its damage can be when many other weapons are much more forgiving. I think it could use a buff to shield recovery time as well since it can't survive in combat without it. If we wanna REALLY buff it i think it should get range comparable to the 52 Gal. Its depicted range stat is higher than its actual maximum damage range. To hit a consistent 81 you have to be in Aerospray range.

I was a hero brella main in splat2n. Here is my reasoning for dropping the weapon in splatoon 3. The loadout just doesn't work anymore. Ink storm was potentially the best special the brella could have had, as its chip damage comboed well with the almost 90 damage meatshot, and would force enemies to retreat from you if the meatshot missed because now you're on a timer to splat the brella before the ink storm chips you out, which you just aren't going to do. Now we have triple strike, which is potentially the worst option to give the brella because of how long you are unable to access your primary weapon, your shield, your main reason for running the weapon. Additionally, it offers very poor displacement compared to ink storm and is a luaghable kill option given how telegraphed it is. This isn't even where the problems end. If this was my only problem with the new loadout, I would still probably be running it in my back pocket, giving it a game or 2 a day. The real breaking problem is how much ink just gets thru the shield now. Finding a way to fix all of the bugs with the brella shields would see me playing the class again, and i really hope to see it at the top of the balance changes come December 1st (and hopefully alongside a new kit with ink storm or even killer wale).

my opinions on brellas dont extend to the default brella since i never enjoyed it. but as someone who spent hindreds of hours on the tenta and plenty of time with every undercover variant in splat2n, its kind of shocking to me that people say the undercover is bad. i think it just has a really restricting playstyle that gets countered by splatlings at range. i always found that every kit felt pretty braindead as you could just attack over and over and then run away for free once you kill someone. with tenta, i miss the camo, but im getting used to using beacons. i found keeping tabs on locations and flanks was perfect for its survivability. i think the biggest issue with the tenta overall is it takes way too much consistent skill compared to nearly any other weapon. its brutal to use. if you make a tiny mistake it can cost the game at any point in time. i think for splat3, id be very happy using it if i could have inkmine or autobomb, and really any other special than what it has now. crab tank would be interesting since its like tenta but a backliner. so youd have to think about where to retreat to and then activate it. which would be really fun.

Honestly, the undercover brella seems to be at a decent spot right now with the addition of reefslider. All three of the brellas seem really good, just need a player with good situational awareness and overall game skills to be able to use them properly. Out of the three, I'd probably say that the undercover brella seems to be the most viable since a team's composition doesn't need to be built around it, alongside the survivability as a result of the ability to shoot with the canopy open. I often end up playing ranked matches where I'm fighting on even ground with the shooters on the enemy team. Though, I definitely have to say that it the peer-to-peer connections with Nintendo Online makes brella canopies extremely buggy. There's been a few times where grenades go straight through the canopy instead of being absorbed by it.
@apersonwhomayormaynotexist9868
Undercover is easily the worst of them rn lmao its always been terrible and reefslider is about the worst special for it

To me the Undercover and Tenta Brella are two sides of the same coin, Undercover is fun to use when you just want to be a casual lone wolf, and Tenta is just as fun when you really want to scratch that itch of being a support on the frontlines. ...Also Tenta kinda feels like a shotgun with how much OOMPH each shot has!

It's good to see people joining the competitive Splatoon scene, but I have to be completely honest when I say that this comment made me laugh for a good while. Sir, the Undercover Brella has basically been nerfed to the point of being considered DRASTICALLY WORSE than EVERY SINGLE OTHER WEAPON in the game. It's fun but it's useless until Nintendo buffs it or gives it a good kit. It's so bad it's only a little bit better than a disconnect.
