I learned that in the LAST two seasons of the show, the production team dropped the lead gun in lieu of the 45 ACP. Rumor has it the combined with the fact that Dornahue & Dickson went out of business and the gun became a very precious piece of collection it might "dissapear" from the set. Second the scarcity of 10 mm. Ammo even for cap guns was very expensive and the public just wouldn't notice the difference 'cause ALL eyes were fixed on Sunny Crockett rather than his gun of choice. Gosh! Were they wrong!..............

Beefed up CZ75 . Good idea but the magazines were behind in overall prodution. People bought 5he weapon platform sans the magazines. Guy I worked with carried one. Large weapon & Ammo then like now was big $$$$. God's idea though. Colt used 10mm in its delta platform & smith /wesson launched their 1006 platform for the fbi. 10mm were loaded pretty stiff & most agents couldn't hit a bull in the ass with a bass fiddle. Voila hence came the 40. Smith/ Wesson.

I had the Colt Delta Elite... ...and I had a serious kick! Norma ammo was pretty much all I could get at the time. I don't think PMC had any available. It was either Norma hollow point or truncated cone. At 25 yards if I aimed center mass I would hit a man-sized target... ...but it would be pretty much a 10 to 12 inch group... ...meaning, I would hit you but where would be the question! 😂. What a fireball in low light levels!

@@44excalibur Was it? I don't remember it being mentioned that it was 10mm on the show once. I could be wrong, but I'd love to rewatch that scene if it had happened. Seemed like Crockett stuck with 45s the whole series: SIG Sauer P220 in the pilot (probably the "Browning BDA" importation batch at the time), Detonics back up pistol alongside the Bren Ten, then later the two Smith Wessons 645 and 4506. The Bren Ten being 45 always seemed to fit right in, especially since they came from the factory in 45 as an option.
@44excalibur
@44excalibur 2 года назад
@@FoxtrotFleet Well, yes, it was. It even says so in this video. lol No, the caliber of Crockett's gun was never mentioned on the show, but the producers still wanted a state of the art pistol for Crockett to use in Miami Vice, so they chose the Bren Ten in 10mm. The only problem was that the 10mm round was so new at the time that no studio had blanks for the round, so Don Johnson's Bren Ten had to be chambered in .45 ACP because that was the only round they had blank cartridges for. Then in season 3 they had Crockett switch to a Smith & Wesson 645 in .45 ACP, and then a Smith & Wesson 4506 in .45 ACP. It's a shame, because the 10mm is a far superior round.
@FoxtrotFleet
@FoxtrotFleet 2 года назад
@@44excalibur I don't think this video counts as evidence that it was supposed to be 10mm. Where was it mentioned if not the show? Was there some kind of interview somewhere in a magazine or tv spotlight? The script? I'm genuinely interested because I'd like for it to have been a 10mm, myself cause well it's cooler. I'm aware of his 45 pistols, as those are all mentioned in my first reply. Thanks.

My Smith and Wesson 4006 drove me crazy with that double hammer drop so I sold it to my cop buddy. He just got on and his dept. We're using the new 4006 Smith and Wesson. Mine was using the 4506 Smith and Wesson our Chief loved Smith and Wesson weapons he used a Marine Colt 1911A-1 in Korea. Then carried his 357 Colt Python until he made Chief in1990. My Grandfather carried his Colt Python 357 on MPD here in Wisconsin. I used it on our dept for 1 year until we switched to the Smith and Wesson 4506. I had 4 speed loader pouches in my duty belt. Good weapons we had i used my 45 ACP Sig Sauer P220 when my Smith Wesson malfunctioned. I kept using my Sig Sauer for 20 years after that then switched to the Sig Sauer P320.

Yes The guide rod was used because the original plug, spring and recoil spring assembly was to long. If you look at the recoil assembly, it incorporated a screwdriver into the mechanism. the combination of the three pieces created binding issues even if the assembly was an inch shorter. Also recoil was so great with the shortened slide that the binding would fracture the slide. I tried several different configurations in my own weapon and the guide rod proved to be far more reliable. My own personal Bren was used as a test bed for all of the modifications done in the shop. Even a 4 inch 45cal (which was never in production) the guide rod was a much better solution.

+Jim Black Hey Jim, I have a Bren 10 mm, and was wondering what grain bullet was used during test firing ? I was looking in an old military camo shop, and found a sh*t load of old Norma 180 gr, ammo, when it was produced in the brown box. I read that the old ammo was loaded to extreme pressure, and would eventuality crack the frame. I only fired a few rounds before I pulled the 180 gr. bullets, and replaced them with 165 gr. Sierra HP bullets. I didn't change the factory powder load, considering it to be safe with the 165 gr. bullets. I choreographed the 165 gr. and got an average of 1224 fps, and found them to be much more accurate than the 180 gr. factory loads. I'd like you're opinion on what gr. bullet is best choice for the 10 mm, any advise would be greatly appreciated ---Rick.
@jimblack6465
@jimblack6465 8 лет назад
Hi Rick sorry for the delayed response, I do not see these posts at times. All the ammo back then was 200 grain Norma ammo. Those rounds were very hot. At the range, I would have at least 2-5 rounds come out of the water and 3/4 of the distance back to me. At times, it was very scary because they were full metal jacket rounds. I had two slide (failures) at the range with those rounds. I did not see 180 grain rounds till well after D&D closed its doors. Mostly due to the rise of the Delta 10mm. To give an example of the round and how awesome it was, I use to silhouette shoot with all these boys with Dan Wesson 44mags. You could see the 44 round trank to the steel in and arch. That 10mm round, straight as an arrow and it would really make the 44 guys mad. Well that and the flying brass. They thought it to be bad form.......

To nitegoat1369, The screw was a trigger stop to prevent the trigger from going to the back of the loop. we had issues of it sticking if the trigger went all the way back I had a few instances were in test firing the weapon would rapid fire up to three rounds, Tom came up with that fix along with some angle adjustments on the sear face. Problem fixed

I remember back in the "80's. the popular gun magazine writer, Chuck Taylor, wrote an article for the Bren Ten in SWAT magazine. Of course the pistol had no magazine (no one had them then) & the write-up was bogus & dishonest. Taylor got his walking papers from the magazine after that! And this Bren Ten review, Taylor wrote after SWAT had just praised him to the moon in a previous issue! I still chuckle about it.

Production of the Bren Ten ran from 1983 to 1986, with fewer than 1,500 total pistols. Orders were 1st taken in 1982, before any sort of in-depth testing could be done. The 1st batch of pistols were sent out to customers with one magazine from a pre-serial batch. The much needed magazines were not available on the US market for 2 years because Italy prohibited their export and customs seized them as war material. Customers cancelled their orders and in 1986 Dornaus & Dixon Inc. went bankrupt.

@melikeit23 Also note there are two common type of clips. Stripper clips with 5 or 10 rounds used to load a magazine. There are also En-Bloc clips which hold the rounds and are inserted clip and all into the weapon. The most common en-bloc clip is the one used for the M1 Garand. After the last shot was fired, the rifle ejected the clip so a new fully loaded clip can be inserted.

A nice idea leveraging the design of the CZ-75 and the expertise of the master of all pistoleros, Jeff Cooper. Sadly, Dornaus & Dixon screwed a lot of us out of our money back in the early 80s and never delivered. If you want a Bren Ten the nearest you can get would be a Tanfoglio/EAA Witness in 10mm, it's a large frame CZ75 clone. Talking of CZ a video has recently surfaced of prototype 10mm pistol that closely resembles the .45ACP CZ97b
@Inkompetent
@Inkompetent 12 лет назад
@Ozku9 I don't think. I know. If you for example add 0.9cm and 0.4cm together you end up with 1.3cm. However due to numerical exactness (one number in both cases) the measurements aren't exact enough to know if it's a little less than 1.3cm, a little more, or exactly. Thus you fall back to say that it is "1cm", since that is the accuracy you KNOW you have. (even if it was 0.94cm + 0.44cm it's still only 1.38cm, i.e. less than any error in exactness that could round the end result to 2cm)

@DudeNumberOnePlus From Wikipedia - "The Bren Ten is a semi-automatic pistol designed to advance the state of the art in sidearms, combining a new more powerful round with a weapon of greater strength and accuracy. The cartridge developed as the 10 mm Auto, while the gun was a larger and stronger version of the 9x19mm Parabellum CZ-75." I guess it really was designed after the CZ-75.

That's not the only gun Crocket used. He also used a S&W 4506 and a S&W 645 in various seasons.

Do you see the Cooper's Gunsite logo on it? The CZ design was on of Cooper's favourites. He had a hand in designing hte 10mm Auto.

The Bren Ten was originally Crockett's Gun on Miami Vice.

@ilovekershaw Not in diameter, but it is in length. It's also more powerful by quite a bit.

@CREWDOG289 shooters made the guns popular, TV shows used what people already thought was cool.. they may have made the general public aware of this one, along with movies, etc.. but I think it's a leap to suggest shooters give a hoot what they play with on TV

Any chance of a video field strip? I'd like to see what's visible of the lockwork with the top end removed.

If I remember well, Crockett's Bren was shorter, wasn't it?

I read that the Miami Vice gun was actually a .45 version because it was easy to make blanks for the .45.

@nialld1990 Actually that has happened. But we are around guns a lot and we always have cameras

@414yoda "IDK about Sonny carying a 4506, in the episode (deliver us from evil) sonny clearly pulls out a 1006, and holds it up close to the camera. Its definately not a 4506" What "Crockett" carried in the show, at least what was published, was the Bren-Ten, then a 645, and in season 5 the 4506. What they put in his hand for that particular scene may have indeed been a 1006, as they use the same frame and look identical from a distance. However, it was *published* to be an S&W model 645.
