Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
Colt introduced the Delta Elite in 1987 to take advantage of the hype and publicity surrounding the 10mm Auto cartridge in the Bren Ten pistol. When the Bren Ten became such an ignominious failure, it left Colt in an excellent position as one of the first companies to actually have a viable offering in the caliber. However, the gun never sold particularly well despite its cult following, and it was removed form production in 1996 because of poor sales. It was reintroduced by Coly in 2009 with a few incremental improvements, and remains available today.
Mechanically, the Delta Elite is basically identical to the standard Series 80 1911. It has a polymer guide rod and recoil buffer, along with a set of dual nested recoil springs to handle the more powerful cartridge. It was a reasonable reliably and durable pistol in stock form with stock ammunition, but suffered from reputation problems because of owners who enthusiastically tried to load and shoot the most powerful ammunition they could find, in pursuit of maximum power.

It's true, I learnt this in a solid mechanics course during my PhD. Cracks grow because stress is concentrated at the tip. If you make a rounded hole instead, the stress in the material is lower, and the hole does not grow.

"It cracked there. So let's just cut out that section, then it can't crack there." Not gonna lie, that sounds like a no-shit, live-action, real-world version of the "Modern problems require modern solutions" meme. I'm so glad it actually worked out in this case
@deathtdow
@deathtdow 2 года назад
Actually it's a widely used engineering solution, it changes the stress distribution. If you do it correctly the stress concentrations will be on areas better able to take the stress. In fact it's more effective than reinforcing a section in alot of applications as the reinforcement often leads to a greater stress concentration in the reinforced sections.

@@deathtdowAbsolutely correct. We can now achieve that relatively easily with computer simulations, as well being able to use generative designs so that such stress concentrations do not happen in the first place (see Czinger 21c for an example). In the past though, it took a lot of imagination and priceless years of experience to be able to roughly visualize stress distributions. Those people were the aerodynamicists of the mechanical world. Some people can see air, others can see stress distribution. But even today, people with mechanical engineering degrees, people who should know better, some still believe that a solid, homogenous piece of metal (for whatever purpose) will always be better than one with holes or otherwise removed material. To that I always give the example of engine conrods. By removing material at the bottom center of the beam, the load will be much more evenly distributed to the big end bearing, rather than having most of the load going right to the middle of it (see Cosworth CA2010 F1 conrod for a great example).

I remember being at the local store a few years after the 10mm was introduced and somebody was inquiring about a Delta Elite, the person behind the counter pulled out three damaged Elites that had been brought in for repairs. They were surprised that the "1911 platform" couldn't handle the load as it was considered a pretty tough gun. "It just can't handle the pressure." I kept talking to the guy because we had briefly met previously and spend an hour or two talking about guns, I'll mention this to him tonight as he's been a good friend over the years.

Colt doesn't make any 1911s with cast slides or frames; who's "they"?
@kennethdowdy1105
@kennethdowdy1105 4 года назад
First gun that I ever saw blow up was Delta Elite using factory ammunition. A chunk of the slide missed my face by inches. The guy standing next to me shooting it was not hurt, thankfully. I avoided buying a 10mm for years after that. When I did, I purchased a Glock 20. It KB’d in my hand with less than 200 rounds through it. I gave up on the 10mm and just stick with my .44 Mag revolver if I ever need to stop a T-Rex hiding behind the ‘fridge. BTW - the Glock incident was due to a case blowout. The Glock was repaired on site and was shooting in less than 15 minutes. I was impressed. I later modified that Glock with a new barrel giving better support to the cartridge, a heavier spring and guide rod, and titanium pins. The guy that got it has one heck of a nice pistol. My inability to use it afterwards was mental and not the fault of the pistol. Also, the round that blew was a very moderate load. The case had been over stressed by resizing due to the excessive bulging with the unsupported chamber. The length of the bulge also indicated that the case was still under a good deal of pressure while extracting. This was combined with that ammunition manufacturer being known for having pretty hard brass in the first place. Fired cases using the new barrel had 2/3 less expansion than with the original barrel. In case anyone wonders, I spent most of my 35 year career in the nuclear industry performing equipment failure analysis, so I am pretty sure of the failure cause.

The French did the same think with the 380mm guns on the Jean Bart. 380mm is equal to roughly 15 inch guns, so actually smaller than the American guns of the time, even though everyone claimed the Bismarck was some scary monster. The only reason the British had such problems with it was because they hadn't caught up with the U.S. on naval technology, in both battleships and carriers.

@Andre McGoo I have no problem with 10mm, but Amehdion said they wanted a 1911 just to have on the wall and admire. Seems sensible to me then to just get a relatively inexpensive modern 1911 in .45 rather than seeking out one specifically in 10mm. No need to put words in my mouth that I never uttered - I'm all in favor of having a variety of different handgun cartridges on the market.

I've had a Delta Elite since 1992. Had it satin hard chromed back then and have always loved it. I haven't shot it recently as I fell out of regular shooting and reloading for some time but will be getting back into it in the next couple of years as kids are growing up and I have some more time and disposable income. I am short, only 5'4", and a single stack with slim grips and a reduced length trigger fits my hand perfectly allowing me to have a proper grip and therefore control. One thing I added back in the dark ages was a HARRTS Recoil Reducer. This is a full length guide rod with tungsten ball bearings and liquid mercury inside. When firing the mass concentrates at the end and has a notable impact on felt recoil. They haven't been around for decades but I have always loved it.

I bought my DE new in 1987. A minor correction-mine came with a magazine with traditional welded construction and it only holds seven rounds. I subsequently bought a later factory magazine with removable follower, as seen in this video, and it holds eight rounds. I don’t think anybody makes a nine-round magazine. The Delta Elite is simply awesome. I load mine with original-spec handloads, not the watered-down .40 S&W stuff that became popular for awhile, nor do I try to increase power beyond design limitations. I use a Wilson Shok-buff system with full-length guide rod, and just had to replace a buffer for the first time as the original one disintegrated (after 30 years and about 2000-2500 rounds). Factory ammo varies widely in terms of power, so shop wisely to make sure you don’t wind up with a weak sister .40 S&W in your holster!

Back in the 1980’s and early 90’s I had five 10 mm, three were some form of Delta Elite, two versions if the standard model, one stainless and one blued, one stainless Delta Elite Gold Cup. Of all the autoloading handguns I’ve had, they were the most accurate I’ve ever owned or shot, especially as three were equipped with target sights. As they were primarily target guns (handgun silhouette) the accuracy as well as the flatter shooting cartridge made them really pleasurable guns to shoot. Regardless what people think, a large majority of people won’t shoot a magazine of 10 mm - they find it too much. In this regard, the 10 mm is like it’s like a magnum, most S&W 29’s have not been shot a full cylinder of full-house factory loads. Although Ian did reference the 200/1200 loading of the first Norma factory 10mm loads, this load is still ASTM standard load and multiple manufacturers stand behind that loading. It does recoil harder than a 40 S&W loading, which is why the FBI developed the lighter load. About the 10mm - this really is a viable 100 yard cartridge with lower bullet drop and retained energies well over, say the full load 9 mm. The biggest difference in effectiveness in handgun loadings today over as recent as the 1980’s is bullet designs of today, allowing for superior performance than bullets before, hence the reliance on the 9mm today. Plus most people are more recoil sensitive, finding shooting a 10 mm less pleasant to shoot.
@molochi

All this. I would add, the 10mm Auto cartridge was developed with the performance of 357magnum and 41magnum in mind, but in a smaller semiauto service pistol case. With factory 357 being ~500ft-lbs and 41mag at around 700ft-lbs, 10mmAuto was initially loaded for ~600ft-lbs. I think the stoutest 200gr handload I've seen listed in a manual was supposed to run 1250fps (close to 700ft-lbs). It's not really surprising that full power 10mmAuto is more of a niche load these days. When it came on the scene, .357magnum had been around for 50years and yet most police departments were still standardized on the 38spl for their wheel guns and transitioning to 9mmPara for semiautos. Pretty much every complaint that would be levied on 10mmAuto had been addressed against 357magnum (and 41mag) decades earlier. I was an early adopter of the Glock 20 and its large grip isn't for everyone, but it delivers it's recoil IMO in a much more pleasant and controllable way than a K Frame 357. Firing uncompensated Deltas reminded me more of my 2-1/2" bbl model 19 with compact grips than I liked. I never really considered stock Deltas to be a good fit for full power 10mmAuto.
@charlesadams1721
@charlesadams1721 6 лет назад
molochi; from being told of the development, Cooper was first looking at a super 9mm, and was an aficionado over the 38 Super (before it was adopted by IPSC shooters to make “Major Power Factor”) they found out the cake heads blew out with loads that approximated the lighter bullet weight .357 loads, so Cooper and Maj. George Nonte developed a wildcat fitting a Colt Commander using a cut down .223 case loaded with 110 grain .357 bullets. According to what I’ve been told and researched, the idea of getting an upgrade to bullet weight and velocity developed into a wildcat using a 38-40 case, with the rim cut down and an extractor groove cut to allow case extraction. Someone had contacts with Norma, who based upon a target bullet weight/velocity spec, which initially was a 200 gr. bullet at 1250 FPS and 140 bullet at 1350. Both were relatively hot and some people had problems with the recoil. I don’t recall an attempt to approximate the 41 magnum, but that both rounds kinda fell in a Sweet Spot. I never had problems with recoil, as I wasn’t trying combat shooting, just hunting and silhouette shooting, both endeavors where doing mag dumps are not the norm. Additionally, during the development of the modern pistol technique, at about the same time, the most common shooting technique was the Weaver technique which incorporated recoil management, unlike today’s Isosceles technique.
@charlesadams1721
@charlesadams1721 6 лет назад
BTW, I owned and tried the original Mag-N-Port (the original modern porting) and disliked it greatly, as IMO all ported barrels are exceedingly loud and obnoxious, and if shot prone or supported, increased muzzle blast obnoxiously as well.
@molochi
@molochi 6 лет назад
Heh, when I started shooting I preferred weaver, still do really. What really got me into 10mmAuto fandom was that I was shooting IPSC with an unported glock17L but they (the local organizers) wouldn't accept 9mm loaded up to major PF. At the time I could afford a glock20 but not a decent 1911 and the 21 wasn't out yet. Also, at the time I was bowhunting pigs and it was legal to carry a 10mmAuto during deerseason. It made for a comforting backup.

Nice job on the video. It was detailed and I learned some things I didn't know about the Delta Elite. My experience with my stainless model purchased in 1991 was not very good. Just taking the gun apart and looking inside the slide, tooling marks and sharp edges were visible. The trigger was very gritty feeling out of the box which was due to tooling marks on the working face of the sear. The gun was never what I would consider reliable. Out of the box, it would have a FTF around once per mag. When I finally got rid of it, it was down to about one failure per box of 50 rounds (after lots of work). That's with factory ammo, many different reloads (light to heavy loads with light to heavy bullets), recoil springs, etc. I finally ended up with a sig p229 (.357 sig) for about the same money and never looked back. Granted, this is just one data point. I'm sure others had better experiences than I did.

Back in the late 1970's I had a Colt Government in 38 super that I really loved. When hand loaded to it's hotter levels it was on par with some of the factory loaded .357's and comparing it to a .357 wheel gun I had was much easier to control especially in rapid fire keeping it on target. I would usually load it to 1400 -1500 fps and experienced no to little cratering of the primers.

I bought a new Delta Elite stainless about 2014/15 but immediately ordered a “SpringCo” recoil guide rod and installed it. This device has very stiff internal springs that catch the slide just before it impacts the frame. Works like a charm and I can handload rounds to any recipe I like without worrying about my pistol frame. Now, by stating that, I do NOT mean I over-power any loads beyond those clearly listed in my loading manuals, of which I have about 10. I stick to the load as listed, being very careful to use the same projectile & primer, exactly. Primer power varies greatly in some brands, so if you’re going to load 10mm’s hot, stick to maximum powder weights but work them up gradually. There are old reloaders (me), and there are bold reloaders, but there aren’t any old, bold reloaders! 😉

It occurs to me that the Delta reboot lasted from 2008-2016. Original production ran from 1988-1996. Almost the same amount of time, 20 years later. Then Colt gave the Delta the XSE treatment and production of the old school Delta Elite ended. Mine is from the 2009-2016 production and other than a different texture on the Pachmyrs is identical in every way to the original guns. And I’m so glad I managed to snag one in that configuration-I wanted one while they were in original production and kept getting talked out of it by acquaintances and shooting enthusiasts because 10mm wasn’t as easy to find back then. This time, I took the plunge and I’m glad I did.

The original .460 Rowland conversions depended upon the extra mass of a muzzle brake compensator threaded to the barrel. The action of the escaping high-pressure gas also delays unlocking. I wouldn't trust the current conversions that only have a ported barrel, and I'd be leery of any muzzle break without baffles unless it is threaded to a coned/heavy profile barrel.

Another adjustment that can be made to help with recoil is a minimally radiused firing pin stop. Most firing pin stops have an aggressive radius to allow easy racking. By only marginally breaking the corner of the stop so it is not completely square and thus a shear, it takes more for for the slide to come back and helps felt recoil.

I purchased the new model in stainless last year, and like it a lot, (after putting ~ $500 worth of upgrades into it, read below). Really nice well-fitted & finished frame slide & barrel, forward-raked serrations, Novak dovetail sights, very handsome gun out of the box. Horrible nasty trigger! All internals appear to be MIM, I replaced them with Wilson's best hammer, sear & disco. Double recoil spring sucked, and the GI-style guide rod was plastic, trashed all that for a Wilson flat wire 24-lb spring and full-length GR w/ shock buff. Mainspring housing was also plastic, trashed for a Wilson checkered stainless unit, w/ 19-lb spring. Trigger pad had no takeup or OT stops, fitted in a Wilson black bow/pad unit. Also a Wilson slide stop, and a tall-button mag release. Put in an action job, fitted the OEM safety lever to the new sear, and trigger is now a crisp 3lb 2oz with series 80 action. Also trashed the cheesy rubber grips for custom-made black G-10 units, with red Delta medallions mounted in the correct location & orientation (of course). The gun is a great shooter, super accurate, ~ 1000 rounds, so far nothing but great shooting. Love the caliber, have joined the 10mm cult! 180gr. Remington and S&B ammo chronos ~ 1150fps, 180gr. Magtech comes in at 1200fps, my 180gr. handloads also ~ 1200. Bad ass pistol for ~ $1500 total. When you consider what quality 1911s can cost, that aint bad.
