Brenda's fashion sense was waaay ahead of her time. Her hairstyles are in sync with today's styles. And her voice was just OUT THERE....outsanding. Can't understand why her career didn't blow up. She should have been a super star !!!

Probably your proper question gives the answer; because she was TOO far ahead of time...(?)
@rjam1974
@rjam1974 7 лет назад
Marketing and as Ms. Emile stated probably a bit too far ahead of her time. You didn't see women dress like this during that period. It would become the norm in the 1970s. I think if Motown or Staxs really put their efforts behind her she would have. Sometimes the true natural talents never see the true results of their work for lack of support from those who really would have made a difference

She refused to be part of Berry Gordy’s harem. Most of the men at Motown wanted her. They would go to her concerts to see what tight fitting gown she was wearing.

@MScott-fc9wf
@MScott-fc9wf 4 года назад
Just like Florence Ballard and many others, she refused to be Berry's puppet. So she had a really hard time so to speak. She had to do her own shopping for stage wear {out of her pocket}. With that talent, she should've become ONE OF Motown's biggest acts.

I didn't realize this song was ever recorded as I found out about it in the late 80s when I finally bought Brenda's first album. After that I became a Brenda Holloway fan even though I knew of her song "Every LIttle Bit Hurt and Land of A Thousand Boys" when I was a kid in the 60s. My mom bought the 45, and "When I'm Gone" so I was really no stranger to her. So after getting her first album I then found out she was singing gospel and bought her gospel album. Since then I've been an avid fan and thanks to youtube found quite a few clips of her early performances as a youngster. Still love her classics and other recordings.

Brenda left the business not long after this appearance. However before leaving the business she had one more top 40 hit that she wrote called "You've Made Me So Very Happy" ….and then according to Smokey Robinson, she walked out of a recording session and never returned.

As stated above, on this day in 1967 {May 6th} Brenda Holloway performed "Just Look What You've Done" on Dick Clark's ABC-TV Saturday afternoon program 'American Bandstand'... At the time the song was at #73 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; a week later it would peak at #69, the following week it remained at #69 and that was it's last week on the Top 100... Between 1964 and 1967 she had six* Top 100 records, her biggest hit was "Every Little Bit Hurts", it peaked at #13 {for 2 weeks} on May 31st, 1964... Ms. Holloway will celebrate her 71st birthday next month on June 21st {2017}... * Her sixth and last charted record was the original version of "You've Made Me So Very Happy" in 1967, two years later Blood, Sweat, & Tears' covered version of the song would peak at #2 for 3 weeks, and for the three weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for those 3 weeks was "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In (Medley)" by The 5th Dimension...

The only thing that mars this is Motown's insistence on its artists smiling through every song, even when they're singing a song about being abandoned. Half the song she looks anguished, but as soon as she hits the chorus, she starts smiling. I love the song - and Brenda Holloway, so this is no slam against her or her singing. Just Motown's need to make Black artists palatable to White audiences, so they'd tell them, "SMILE!" This was true, by the way, mostly in the 60s, although it happened in the 70s, too (just look at any Jackson 5 video). Back to the song. It kicks butt!
@jackanthony976
@jackanthony976 7 лет назад
That is a good point you bring up. I think that the artists smile even though they are singing of heartache because of the musical track which is upbeat and made for dancing. How could anyone not smile to the Motown rhythm behind these songs. Just saying
@sarnahudane4583
@sarnahudane4583 7 лет назад
JACK ANTHONY - I tend to believe it was as you just expressed; the artists smiled because the music was just so damn upbeat and friggin fantastic, how could you not smile, or just jump up and start dancing. Thanks to the FUNK BROTHERS. I don't understand how some people can just jump on youtube and make statements as if their a matter of FACT without providing any kind of proof backing their statements, for that matter not even identifying themselves as a previous Motown studio musician or previous employee of Motown to support their statements if that were the case, or even a book that their "quoting" from. I always call hog wash to those kind of statements made. After all Motown dubbed itself "The Sound of Young America" geared towards selling records to young people who bought them to DANCE too. I recall back in the 60's on American Bandstand they would have a segment called 'Rate a Record' and teens would 9 out of 10 times say 'It had a good beat and was easy to DANCE too'. So the smiling for the white man to me sounds like a bunch of bull. Case in point, Sam Cooke was one of the first Black cross-over performers in the 60's who did not record dance music but was widely accepted by White America and he wasn't CHEEZIN' for the camera singing his ballads begging the white man for acceptance, they just accepted him for whatever reason and the same can be said for Nat King Cole.

Hi guys, good to talk with you, no that's not Patrice but shes really into the groove with Brenda on that song. Brenda in recording gospel music, and did performances with Brenton Woods some years back in the regional Los Angeles areas. She also flys to Europe from time to time to sing her hits. In 2005 here in Los Angeles a large group of Pub dancers flew to los angeles for their annual convention to meet and greet the r&b artist they love and listen to for years, dating back to the 60's. The music we recorded back then still remains popular in the UK and they dance vigorously while having beer and they can really dance. When they came to L.A., for their annual convention, we met with them and we were performing those hits. many r&b artist like, Brenda, the Originals, Kim Weston, the lead guitar player and co writer with the Temptations, Bobby Saunders a producer of the group The Young hearts, myself and other Motown and r&b artist. I'm still performing several times a week in Santa Monica California and Private affairs, and even the Marina Yatch Club and I'm very active. I have a fan base that enjoy my shows weekly. I cover all the Motown artist like the temptations, smokey, Stevie Wonder, George Benson, the Spinners and all of the American songbook. I love our history of music, so I'm called the Godfather of songs... and that includes Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin and all the great songs in our musical history. I keep the music alive, and in the ears of the public. I worked on various tv shows and movies for 13 years as a Screen Actor on The Shield, The District as a cop/ detective for 4 on 7 years respectively on each drama show. I was in Dream Girls with Jamie Foxx, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson with cameo performances in the scenes as an organ player of the funk brothers group playing behind Jennifer Hudson. I worked on Everybody Hates Chris for 4 seasons as a neighborhood character, based on Chris Rock's life in New York as a kid. I was also in Adam Sanders movie The Longest Yard as a pressbox tech. and counless other shows and movies. So over the years I've stayed busy working with my own band, producing shows, working with a 18 pc big band for 10 years, nightclubs and on and on. I went to college to become a Media law attorney as well, my son did commercials, and my grandaugher currently does commercials. I now however am enjoying singing and perfoming. I plan to hooked a spot in the Vegas area soon, through agents that like my diverse performance. So entertainment has been my life, and I never stopped.
