Thing is, knowing Brennan, that may be the case. He'll defeat expectations in favour of a more complex reality.

Or perhaps there's more to the story than the historical record -- written by the victors -- shows. Perhaps people, including gods, are more complex than a two-dimensional characterization, and this is the first time we're getting the other side of the story.

The thing is that atonement doesn't change alignment, it restores the creature to its former alignment; Lord Asmodeus was and has always been Lawful Evil. I don't think the ceremony spellnwas interrupted; i think that alignment restoration took hold and that's when the snap happened.

@@PyrotechNick77 Brennan says Asmodeus interrupts the ceremony, so yes, it was interrupted. If he was _always_ Lawful Evil, then he was just avoiding the inevitable reveal that nothing would change. It still doesn't change the fact that this is one tricky sonofabitch, and he has successfully shared the tale of Darth Plagueis the Wise to his Anakin.

@@PyrotechNick77 We don’t really know if it’s always been the case. And there are some interesting complications. We don’t know what changing is alignment back to normal would’ve done, as we don’t know if his alignment is because he sided with the primordial’s or because that’s just who he is. One of the weird things about the Lord of Hells is that he has no domain of his own. He is the Lord of lies, but so is the spider queen. He’s the lord of tyranny and conquest but that’s stated for too. His only claim to his status is being simply the most powerful maybe, and most clever of the Betrayers. So what if his story is 100% true. He got little brother’d. All the best things were stated for, and he had nothing left to give, and the only thing he kept was his word, maybe because being a god of evil things sucked. And it’s not crazy that he would still be injured, the main story is 1000 years in the future and Ioun has still not healed. What if that protection wasn’t meant as a sign of good faith, as he doesn’t expect him to In fact told him to reel it in, but he said we went through the gate. We. The Devils are loose already, and the Betrayers are not friends. Even if that would’ve turned him back into a celestial, at this point would he want to be? Would you be able to deny yourself a chance at revenge? But you could also be right, after all he is simply the lord of lies… well… one of them.

As part of the spell the character has to make an insight check. Cancelling the spell cancels the insight check thus keeping the truth under wraps.

Of course not. He’s the architect of creation, the creator of lies and deception, and the being who believes he alone deserves full power over all the cosmos and all within it. That is who Asmodeus is. A being of pure evil who is also accepted as a legitimate deity of worship even by the good and just gods because of his deceptions in Pathfinder lore. He is an incredibly nuanced being despite being pure evil because he is capable of good and truth to achieve his ends. Nothing is out of reach. If charity wins the favor of a powerful mortal or two, he will be kind and charitable to draw them into his web.

@@SaintDaisley We actually are in the middle of the story. It's a 4 episode series. Asmodeus is also the same evil being who took advantage of Serenrae's belief in the redemption of others to deal a massive blow to her by killing almost all of her followers near the end of the Calamity. Chris Perkins, one of the main writers of D&D lore, has said that Asmodeus is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet because he uses "niceness" as a tool to get what he wants, and he knows what people respond to. He's a master manipulator. Everything I said is effectively who Asmodeus is in the lore. Someone can be both the most evil being there is and a nice guy.

@@SaintDaisley Wow, taking things a bit personal there for something that isn't yours either. We do know that Serenrae felt compassion for Asmodeus at the end of the Calamity and tried to redeem him, which he exploited and used her compassion to kill almost all of her followers. This is canon to the events of Exandria. What we know will happen already proves that Asmodeus cannot be trusted. It's right in the Exandria lore books.

I think he died when he tried to help activate the engine that Seeley's wife has been working on. He got teleported to another realm or just erased and you're right about the modify memory.

I for one absolutely love the complexity. Asmodeus is making a strong case that he never got a fair trial - just thrown to limbo by the victors. However it seems to be established fact in the canon that Asmodeus did kill/cause the death of his followers and that fact alone does make him a mass murderer. We have not yet seen enough in this series to know much about Asmodeus'es motivations, character or plans. As canon history would suggest he is much likely a psychopath without real empathy towards others - but it is a titillating possibility too that he might regret at least some of the bad things he'd done in the past. The character and morality of Zerxus is interesting too. Obviously some hate and bitterness over past events related to Evandrin's death there. Also what will he be willing to do if represented with a possibility to bring Evandrin back to life ? Maybe sell his soul to Asmodeus ? Crossroads ahead. Love it.

@@IceMetalPunk Is it? What is it exactly? You could reasonably ascertain that, should the book have been anything else, but the source book is the thing that is *specifically* for Game Masters. It's not just expanding the lore of the world but also explaining it. It is the Man behind the curtain revealed. It's the thing that lists out all the magical and wonderous items in the world and rates it's rarity and plainly lists out all of the effects. During the campaign 2 wrap-up, Matt said that he doesn't want to reveal much about the savalir woods, because he doesn't want to interfere with other GMs coming up their with their own lore. The fact that Matt and the team went out of their way to say that this guy can't be trusted means that they have decided that in their universe, Asmodeus can not be trusted. Who knows, maybe Brennan literally just Lucifer's the guy and a month from now you can come back and laugh at me. At least I've explained myself on why i think this is the case.

To me the wild part is no serious roleplayer could ever have had their character resist that, no will save could pull you out of that trap

Nah some of the D20 cast are annoying AF. TBF they serve very different spectrums of the D&D community. But BLM is an absolute beast of a DM and a master of improv.

Why bring the whole cast? That would just turn CR into D20, and they already exist.

I doubt Asmodeus is going to be "just" misunderstood. That would be too easy, and would retroactively ruin cleric characters like Pike. I don't think the "good" gods are going to be squeaky clean, but I don't think that automatically means that Asmodeus and the rest of the Betrayer gods are going to be simply blameless scapegoats. Heck, we've seen Vecna and Tharizdun do horrible things in the campaigns. Also, I have too much faith in Brennan and Matt to make the cliche twist reveal "Oh, the good guys were the bad guys, and the bad guys were the good guys all along!!"

History like the fact he compels his followers to kill and murder and violate? History like the fact that detect evil comes up with him as a black so absolute it renders all of evil grey in comparison? History so recent and provable it's not history written by anyone, just facts experienced by the survivors of this demon? Dude, it's the Lord of the Hells, who routinely has people tortured to death.

An important thing to note is that at the end of the Calamity, _ALL_ the gods left Exandria(some less willingly than others). This, to me, is a sign that while the Prime deities might not have been pure good, they were probably wise enough by the end to see that they weren't immune to starting another Calamity amongst themselves and create a second set of "Betrayer Gods".

@@ocadioan It's perfectly possible that the Calamity itself caused the Prime Gods to realize they were hypocritical sacks of shit barely better than their enemies, and how we know them from previous campaigns is a massive personality shift due to the trauma and realization. And there would be extremely delicious potential in their reaction to any mortal discovering the history lost to the apocalypse and confronting them with it.

@@ocadioan OR and this is my favorite twist, the Primes didn't create the Divine Gate and were locked away just as the Betrayers were.

You must be fun at parties. You can only see things from the point of view of people just like you, and you're "normal" enough you've never had to challenge your perceptions because most media caters to your narrow worldview. This actor was told "you have a flaw or obsession that could cause the apocalypse" and he chose to play it as someone who 100% believes with every fiber of his being that everyone- everyone, even the betrayer God himself- can be redeemed. Everyone in the series has this moment of extreme obsession; that's the POINT.

Yet, you yourself are so upset by any perceived criticism of your preferred show, that you're unable to even discern if it's a criticism of the content itself, the actor/creators, or the audience. There isn't a word in my comment about the choices Louis made or how the plotline progressed. All I did, was point out that the significant portion of viewers/commenters (who *do not* possess the same tragic flaw as the character) fell for a simple, easy to see through, sob story. If any of us two needs to challenge their beliefs and views It's you, buddy.

At this point we still didn't know exactly what happened with the ritual. I know that I was under the impression that whatever was done differently from the Matron's was causing Asmodeus' mantle to be slowly torn from him putting him in this state. That if they had killed him a a weakened state Vespin would have fully received the mantle and it would have sped up his plan. In that case, yea he's still the lord of lies and is going to go back on any alliance of "promises" he made, but he's still getting fucked over right now. Of course now it's clear that Vespin's ritual was different because he just wanted to ascend high enough to be a lackey and Asmodeus is just a shit with a sob story.

@@loganfields159 I feel like it might be more of secretly bad good guys. With the prime deities being not as good as we were led to believe. The Betrayers have there reasons for being evil, but are still evil.

It took me awhile to get into this group. I stopped watching the first episode a few times cuz I was getting a little bored...but then I realized this is the story leading up to the action. It's really good story telling and it's just a build up
