The Wil Wheaton Dice Curse

It wasnt 2 generations ago. An ancestor of his 10 generations ago made the unwise decision to cross Taliesin Jaffe.

I fired, and I missed. So I fired, and I missed again. Then I fired and I missed. Then I passed out and woke up and fired and missed again.

I have a friend who kept rolling horribly week after week (changed dice, didn't matter, went digital, didn't matter) and we finally figured it out - he shook Wil Wheaton's hand at a convention, and has been cursed ever since

I love how at the beginning they are like "oh, yeah, the curse joke, funny", but slowly they just witness it and suffer psychological damage in real life.

When the DM can't fix your dice and admits you're cursed, you're screwed.

The fact that the curse persisted into an INVERSE SYSTEM kills me.

I want to see Will Wheaton play a wild magic sorcerer for the sheer amount of chaos there would be from all the wild magic table rolls there would likely be.

I don't recall where he said this, but I have heard Wil say in an interview "I don't roll low, I roll wrong"

Wil Wheaton is not alone. I have a friend with the same issue. We largely resolved it for her in the following way. We got a nice narrow wooden pencil box with a clear front. We bought a set of dice WHICH SHE NEVER TOUCHED. We put them in the pencil box and permanently sealed it. Now she just shakes the box and reads the appropriate die type without ever touching them.

I feel like Will Wheaton should be given advantage on all his roles simply for being Will Wheaton and having the courage to continue to play dice rolling games

"He just rolled a twenty when it didn't matter." Yeah that sounds about right. I like the fact that Will at least owns his curse and finds actual enjoyment in the fact he is so so terrible at rolling.

Wil is a grade A example of how to make the most of shit rolls. There are people who'll bring the whole session down because of a bad roll, but Wil shows us how to ride the wave and still have a good time.

Just because of that poor dice rolling luck, on DND Beyond...I homebrewed a debuff spell called Luck of Thorbir.

Makes me want to get a mathematics degree just so I can write my dissertation: A Mathematical Proof That Wil Wheaton Does Not, Will Not and Cannot Exist.

I'm so glad that the one-shot was also included in this, because that system treats a Nat 20 like d&d treats a Nat 1, and Wheaton got SO MANY 20s IN THAT GAME

We need Wheaton as a guest on campaign 3. I remember when early in season 2, a guest brought a "gift" in a sealed hazmat bag. A dice which was touched by will. And the whole cast jumped like the plague

I love how when Talieson is clensing the room, Travis is like "What the hell are you doing?" then when he says Wil's name Travis just nods like "Ah yeah, okay." :P

The way that Matt immediately broke out into that rant the millisecond the guy finished the question really indicates to me how deeply it affected him.

He used to bless dice. There are videos online, people used to ask him to bless their dice. The curse is a result of his hubris.

The fact that he try’s to make the best of his bad luck, instead of dragging down the game and ruining it,is an aspect of Wil Wheaton that makes him a good player.

I have a firm belief that Matt created the "College of Tragedy" bard subclass in his Tal'Dorei reborn book just so that Will Wheaton can pop off.

We should put Taliesin Jaffe, Wil Wheaton, Ally Beardsley, and Brian Murphy in the same game, just to see what will happen.

I found a d20 that is only 20s I feel like Will would still somehow roll a 1 on it.

The way that he owns the fact he has such bad luck is amazing, he's so proud of it.

I just love the image of Wheaton's dwarf character being like a totally overconfident badass in manner, but essentially a complete liability to the party through his ineptitude/bad luck.

The thing I love the most about Wil is how not upset he is. He never complains, he is never grumpy or anything. Every time he rolls low he makes a joke out of it and keeps enjoying the whole thing and that's just really sweet

Ironically, I find Matt's conversion to a believer to be the best part of this. He starts off demanding an explanation, even getting Wil to change the dice, and is just flabbergasted... to eventual grim acceptance of what is the Wheaton dice curse.

My favorite clip has to be 4:08. The laugh together with the audible thud of Liam's head hitting the table gets me every fucking time I swear lmao

My first knowledge of the curse was sometime in campaign two when Laura is taking a die sent by a fan out of a plastic bag and someone tells her that wil touched it and she just about chucks it out of frame in panic

I am determined to get a die that has been blessed by Taliesin and cursed by Wil, if my prediction is correct, it will only ever roll a 1 or a 20

When he starts talking to himself "theoretically... There are 20 faces on that die..." XD

I think the most impressive part is he has a curse, knows about said curse yet still absolutely loves tabletop games and hasn't quit them hahaha

Y'know, the best part is, the way Matt rolled in the Kevdak fight... the scheme to use the curse as sabotage *WORKED.*

Myself and a friend met him at a convention in 2019 and we each gave him a d20 and a d12. Amazingly, he rolled a 19 on the d20 and a 12 on the d12. He was so amazed that he took a picture of it to save. It was great.

Having watched loads of TableTop as well, Wil's dice curse is amazing. He rolls low for games where low is bad, but high for games where high is bad. His dice defy all logic and physical probabilities

I have a friend in a similar situation who I gave weighted dice to. Imagine my face when she's given weighted dice and STILL has the worst roles of the session. So we've decided that HER using them is fair and balanced.

There's something I've seen nobody talk about regarding what Will said at the start of the video, he said to Liam: "I hope you're not attached to anything about your character" and we all know Vax's tragic fate, so yeah, the curse did get to him in a way, technically speaking.

Out of 54 rolls, ten were natural 1s, seven were 2s, four were 3s, four were 4s, and one was a 5, for a total of 26 = 48% of his dice rolls getting a 5 or lower. On the other side of the dice, he rolled no 16, one 17 and one 18, two 19s, and a 20, for a total of 5 = 9% of his dice rolls getting higher than 15.

My dad and I play a bunch of table top games, particularly Warhammer 40k and DnD, and we have both agreed, he is the person that Will is talking about. He cannot roll bellow 17 for D20s or 5 for D6s for some unexplainable reason. He is the Ying to Will's Yang. The Anti-Wheaton. Whenever my mates and I even dare try and face him in 40k, our armies are disintegrated and our souls reduced to blasted wastelands. Thank you Will, for brining balance to the force, your sacrifices will not be forgotten.

I want someone to TEST this. I want a DETAILED list of all his past recorded dice rolls. I want him rolling via TOWER. I want him using DIGITAL DICE. I want to see the variation between him in PLAY and him just rolling for FUN. I WANT TO SCIENCE THE WHEATON DICE CURSE.

The fact that he was in for a total of like 6 hours of gametime and in a video dedicated to only his bad rolls, he managed to consume 30 minutes. Nearly 1/12th of the runtime to ONLY bad rolls.

I am convinced Matt created the tragedy subclass just for Will

Watching Matt just slowly & painfully lose his sanity over Wil's rolls is my favourite part of all of this. That being said, I want to just, be his Dice Scribe. I want to record the rolls over any given session & just study them. I want to figure out what's happening.

When the crew had him touch Matt's dice before the fight with Kevdak the problem was that he didn't send out the bad rolls, he absorbed the bad rolls, making Matt roll higher

As someone who skipped these two episodes due to Orion being in them I wasn't privy to the sheer absurdity of the Wheaton dice curse. I thought it was a passing joke, something blown out of proportion. A minor occurrence that could be chalked up to simple bad luck over a few days. Something within the bounds of probability. The incomprehensible impossibility I have just witness has converted me. This man is truly and entirely cursed, and I don't wish his fortune upon anyone.

the fact that matt describes it as some bloodline curse from an ancient relic, like its the plot of some treasure hunt movie just shows how much of a nerd he is and i love it

I added a cursed necklace to my game to honor Thorbir. Any time a d20 would be rolled you must roll a d4 instead. Removing the curse is now the number one priority.

Man, I had heard Matt's rant about this before, but I assumed Will just rolled, you know, a couple bad rolls. But no, it's literally dozens. Are we absolutely sure he wasn't rolling a d6?

My friend rolled an UNNATURAL amount of natural 20's in our campaign, with ONE particular dice, which happened to be from a Chthulu set. He played a barbarian. This was descent into avernus. Devils didn't stand a chance

Ah yes, the session that made Taliesin bring a smudge stick to cleanse the air.... and he still rolled a one that session.

So by the end of the Campaign, Vax had the most Natural 1s at somewhere around 60. That's over the course of a 100 and some odd change episodes. Will has 10 in just the two episodes he's in. Based on that math, Will would have rolled a total of 500 Natural 1s if he had been in from the beginning.

It is more impressive that the curse can transfer a little. If I remember the fight correctly, he had an ability to command others to attack during his turn. Probably an attempt to get around the dice curse. He ordered Keyleth to attack and then she rolled low on every attack he ordered her to do. I don't think she landed a single attack that was ordered by Thorbir.

I loved everyone's reaction when Khary Payton guest starred in S2 and brought a d20 Wil Wheaton touched.

God, I want to write a thesis on this. Just put Wil Wheaton through a variety of tests. -Regular DnD combat, as a control. -DnD combat but when he rolls, we subtract that number from 21, and THAT'S what he gets, so he wants to roll low. -DnD combat but *someone else* flips a coin to see which of the above results will be evaluated, each time Wil rolls. -The above, but the coin is flipped AFTER Wil rolls. -etc See how distant we need to get from Wil's dice-rolling intent before the statistics normalize.

I created a god of misfortune as a twin of tymora (or whatever god of luck I happen to use) named for Mr Wheaton. If anyone happens to roll two 20s in a row for the next 24 hours lady luck is with them and they can instead of rolling choose to automatically crit on any 3 roll, once per turn in combat. If they roll two 1s then for the next 24 hours they are in the presence of Wheaton and the DM chooses 3 rolls to auto fail. Rarely used in combat.

I genuinely went through 5 stages of grief while watching this.

Having never watched the curse in action until today, I am amazed... It's like watching a train wreck; it's horrible, awful, but you just can't stop watching it unfold...

I appreciate how he didn't go for a sorcerer or a wizard, someone that casts spells that requires the enemy to roll. He purposefully went for the class that requires him to roll the most on HIS end

As a mathematician what I have witnessed in this video has deeply shaken me. I think there is a need to develop a special containment procedure to protect reality from whatever Wil does to probability.

Will Wheaton's reaction to rolling a 20 at 14:07 is the same reaction I would have if I won the lottery. Same odds too.

Will is like the dice equivalent of that Ace Ventura scene where he's catching the spears, except there's 30 spears in him, and he's on fire.

Can I just say I admire the level of this curse's vindictiveness? I mean, when the roles were reversed and Wil was playing a game where rolling LOWER was actually BETTER then the dice curse literally said, "welp, guess WHAT? NOW YOU ROLL HIGH!" That's spiteful. I can at least respect that.

Thorbir appeared in three episodes in Campaign 1, though he was only active and played by Wheaton in two, yet he still has more Nat 1s than Tary accumulated over his entire run in the series.

I think that after exandria unlimited we will need this kind of video about Matt's dice curse

Back in 1982 or 1983, a friend who was running a D&D campaign showed me the latest issue of Dragon magazine which had an article about creating and playing a barbarian. I was so on board! While rolling his stats, I rolled 18/00 for his strength (how appropriate). But in the course of playing the game, this guy couldn't hit the broadside of an orc! Every time I rolled, I missed. Until, the character only had 5 or less hit points left; then suddenly I was rolling hits and often criticals. With his strength, he became a lawn mower to the monsters. Myself and the other players were discussing this odd behaviour of the dice and it got to the point where the archer in our party would shoot my character in the back just to knock his hit points down so he would "go berserk". I literally had no control over this, it was just how the dice worked for that character. He was truly a berserker barbarian would defeat death at the last moment.

It's well known that Wil's a descendent from a man that lived long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Yes, his great great... grandfather was a stormtrooper.

Wil and Matt hugging should've been a matter-antimatter reaction and caused a thermonuclear-level explosion.

I finally understand everyone's reaction to the Will-blessed die a guest brought in during Critical Roll campaign 2 lol.

They should have invited him for the whenever you're rolling natural one you pay $100 thing for campaign two

Having started watching Campaign 3 recently, I believe the halfling passive Liam is enjoying with protection against 1 rolls is a direct sideeffect of Will's existence :p
