This is the genius of how Otis does interviews. I think most people, musicians included, have a hard time talking about themselves, but ask them about something else, "what was it like working with (famous musician)," get them talking about other musicians, and they'll tell the most interesting stories, and in the process reveal more about themselves than if they'd been asked directly about their lives.

Wow! I just heard my friend at the local guitar store talking about Brennen Leigh yesterday. How she plays country music “before the strings”. Then you feature her today on your channel. I now have a new favorite artist to listen to. Your channel is wonderful. I really appreciate the guests that you feature. Thanks again. Yes I did buy a new guitar so life is good. Please keep on doing what you are doing

I’ve only recently discovered Brennan Leigh’s music and live it! It’s hard to find music that’s just plain sweet. Beautiful melodies, instrumentation, and her gorgeous voice make for songs that bring a happy smile. “John Deere H.,” “You’ve Never Been To N. Dakota,” “Yellow Cedar Waxwing,” “Prairie Funeral.” I am really enjoying her music!

Thanks for the Brennen link.....I grew up in Madison Tennessee in the 50's and 60's; now live in Texas. Both areas have rich heritages in the genre of Country and Western Swing, but I very much agree with Brennen's and Chris' take on the mid-century bias. I am glad to see current day artists such as Luke Combs,Miranda Lambert and Cody Johnson write songs that are outside of the pop country Nashville template......

Brennen could be considered a country purist. The real, honest, old-school country. Her perspective is refreshing, and this is a great interview. Thank you, Otis 🙏🏻🤍

I never heard of Brennen Leigh before, but I’m a long time fan of Western Swing, so I gave her album with AATW a listen-LOVE IT!!! I also gave the Honkytonkin’ album a listen-great stuff! Thank you Otis, for all the fantastic interviews and all the rest of your content. Because of you I’ve been turned on to a lot of great music I otherwise never would have heard. You’re a real treasure man!

Brennen's new record is one of the best things I've heard in years. Effortlessly beautiful (like her). There's nothing that gives it away as a record made in 2023. But, it's also not trying to be "retro". It's simply a collection of remarkably well-written tunes played with love and respect by consummate musicians and sung with truth at the forefront. Bravo!

I shared this with a friend who has played and recorded a lot of Western Swing. Great storytelling. Asleep at the Wheel played for a big show in Ames, Iowa, then joined a lot of us fans at a pizza parlor after. Ray Bensons tall stature gave them away when they came in. .

Love Brennen!! Visited Austin about 2 years ago to see some friends at the Continental Club. When they were through they told me they picked up a second gig across town at The White Horse playing for Brennen. She was pickin’ and singin’ that Western Swing, only people not on the dance floor where the bartenders. I’ve seen her a couple of times since with Asleep at the Wheel and with Melissa Carper and Kelly Willis. And I haven’t even mentioned her song writing…..Amazing talent!!

I saw AATW including Miss Brennen and Lucky Oceans in Adelaide, Australia last night. Holy shit!! WHAT A PERFORMANCE!! Blew my mind at how good they were as musicians. I am a huge Guy Clarke fan and his comment about Miss Brennen..."she plays guitar like a MF" is so accurate.❤ Prairie Love Letter has me weeping like a baby!

I’ve seen Brennen in LA over a decade ago and loved her album The Box. Having followed her through the years I’m glad to see her get attention on a broad scale. I love that she found success In Nashville, and believe she deserved a National audience since I first heard her. I’m shocked to hear her take on Austin vs Nashville, but I think she tells it like it is. She is genuine in her love of Honky Tonk and classic country. How talent like hers was overlooked by Austin is strange, Brennen is a real player with real chops in playing and songwriting so she deserves to be recognized.

She's absolutely right about women musicians getting shafted in Austin. Some of the most famous honky tonks in town basically never book women. And what she didn't mention is that the money is crap here. Redd Volkaert is a friend and former neighbor. He's one of the best country guitarists in the world and he has at least one Grammy. He played for tips every Saturday afternoon. He finally moved to Virginia because his real money was doing session work and he did that in the studio in his barn and just emailed his parts in.

yall seem spot on to me as usual....while to me country is if not a misnomer a term that gives people connotations of made for money radio pop mainstream greedy not honest auto tuned malarky which is a falsehood...and i love what Brennen says about rock and country, adding genre classfication is stupid tho understandable somewhat...anyway, on the postivie i agree much of the music i love in recent decades would be called country alt countr yamericana etc.....antyhing i listen to that would be called rock is probably old and if the bands still tour or record its not much.....the truthful honest singer songwritng def comes from the type of music shes talking baout it and as i got to say with the awesome brent cobb yetserday (who otis should def get on his show sometime! that would be as lively vibrant and honest as Shiyribs...and lal the others but speaking from my experience on that anyway) labels aside....we was born or love to rock...in whatever format style genre......thank you - SJOCR
