Jon Heacock's 3-3-5: • Iowa State Football: J...
In this video, we'll learn about the history and evolution of the 4-3 defense of Brent Venables, new Head Coach of the Oklahoma Sooners football team. We'll see how he got his start as a walk-on linebacker at Kansas State under coaches like Bob Stoops and Jim Leavitt, and how he worked his way up within that coaching tree, eventually becoming the Defensive Coordinator for Stoops at Oklahoma, before getting hired away by Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers. We'll also see how his defense changed, going from an aggressive, man-blitzing defense at Kansas State in the 90's, to a more cautious zone-blitzing scheme in the early 2000's, before starting to adopt anti-spread schemes from guys like Jon Heacock, who's 3-3-5 defense has taken the football world by storm over the last few years.

Phenomenal Video.. You did a tremendous job maintaining a consistent flow of extremely detailed information.. lifelong OU fan living in OKC I couldn't be more excited about What Brent Venables is implementing, bringing in an entire mindset and identity..

Thanks! As an OU fan you probably knew a lot of the history here. Would you say that the OU fanbase is excited to get back into the Stoops 4-3/zone blitzing world, or do you all not really care what the scheme is as long as the coach is proven like Venables?

@@TheCoordinatorProject We're definitely stoked to see a return to the aggressive blitzes we saw in the early 2000s

@@TheCoordinatorProject actually you threw in quite a few fun facts on Venables & Stoops that I was unaware of so I definitely enjoyed that piece.. as far as the fan base the 4-3 Blitz/Zone.. I feel like it better suits the players we have extracting and using their talent putting them in position where they can fully succeed. Seems like the last few years a lot of defensive players were playing out of position and didn't seem like they're being coached up. All that has changed as Coach V has brought a new mindset New Identity Raising the standard with accountability and excellence in every aspect.. Extremely Excited

Most impressive thing about coach V is how he's developed and thrown in about every pass coverage imaginable in his blitzing defense. Really refined that at Clemson. But it'll take a year or 2 before he starts getting the level of DBs he had at Clemson.

Bv runs a base 4-3 but in 2019 after those 4 dlineman left he ran a 3 down front but just used more db and lb blitzes to create exotic pressures
@TheCoordinatorProject
@TheCoordinatorProject 2 года назад
Oh yeah, he's definitely got some range in there, and even in the base 4-3 they'll get into some odd front spacings, since their DE's are already expected to be stand-up edge players a lot of the time. Like you said for 2019, ,against WF and Pitt the 3-3 was their big blitz group in Nickel, vs. the 4-2 which was more for when they just wanted to play solid. Making this video, it was really cool to see Venables bringing in a lot of these ideas from the base-nickel world.

@@TheCoordinatorProject yeah until bv can get a ton of top level guys like he had with the power rangers in 2018 hes probably gonna get pressure with 3 down fronts and a lot of exotic blitzes

Awesome to see those Nebraska offensive sets which included Spread way back in the 90's.

The more I do these breakdowns, the more it's clear that the true origin of the "spread offense " and "anti-spread defense" hasn't really been written. I haven't broken it down yet, but the fact that coaches like Bill Snyder, Bob Stoops, and Gary Patterson had to face Osborne regularly surely had a huge impact on the trajectory of the game.

Thanks, I did indeed! The most interesting part is all the work combing through game film from 20-30 years ago and seeing how different the game was, and seeing the seeds of how it was going to change.

15:59 mark is that Stovall ? Aka man of many schools played for ? Can you do a breakdown for pitts OC Marion ? Great stuff again the history set up prepares me to follow along through the progression/tendencies The Iowa DC with the 3-3-5 any similarity to what Wilcox and Sirmon run ? Wow @ the Breakdown of Clemsons fronts in that wake forest game. Multiple fronts indeed Keep them coming !!! Thanks 👍🏽
@TheCoordinatorProject
@TheCoordinatorProject 2 года назад
Hah, yep, that's Stovall. I'm gonna look at Pitt's offense as a part of this rotation (the next three vids will be the offenses at Pitt and WF, and the defense at Syracuse), but Marion was the WR coach, so the Pitt video will focus on Whipple, who just moved to Nebraska. I'm definitely keeping an eye on Marion, though. He's a really intriguing up-and-comer. Heacock's defense is totally unique, though several Big-12 guys are moving toward it. It's different from Wilcox in that it's often playing like a 3-2 in the front, so hyper-light boxes, a ton of drop-8 coverages, etc. Wilcox and Sirmon really run more of a de facto 4-2, with an OLB playing one or both "End" spots, so they're really more of a consistent 6-man front/7-man coverage look, and their pressures are pretty different. They also don't run a ton of true 3-high Safety stuff, which is a defining feature of Heacock's ISU defense. Cal's more of a traditional two true Safeties, 1 down NB kind of look.
@TheCoordinatorProject
@TheCoordinatorProject 2 года назад
Wilcox really helped to define the Boise St. hybrid 4-2/Nickel 3-4 style of defense, so we're talking a really close relative of guys like Andy Avalos (though his alignments and coverages are pretty different) or Pete Kwiatkowski, and then that style of defense has fed into a bunch of mid-major/lower P5 DC's, so you'll see it a lot from light, quick, hybrid anti-spread defenses around the country. The stuff coming out of the Big-12 has evolved mostly independently over the last ~5 years, with some influence from earlier odd-spacing 3-3-5 teams (Charlie Strong, Rocky Long, etc.).
@TheCoordinatorProject
@TheCoordinatorProject 2 года назад
And of course, Wilcox and Aranda have cross-pollinated defensive ideas like crazy, so I can't forget to mention that connection, lol.

@@TheCoordinatorProject one more thought the relationship between front DL and Lb and back end DB n the different schemes is very interesting. When Cals defense early last season was not making plays (missed tackles/bad angles) it looked to me like as if the front guys and back guys were not synced up per say.
