She actually started off singing covers of Anita Baker. Her first single was supposed to be an Anita Baker song but she turned it down and Babyface gave it to his new artist, Toni Braxton.

Actually Anita turned down songs Babyface wrote for her and told him to give it to “that girl” which was Toni. So technically Anita missed her check there
As a Contralto singer, I can say that Anita Baker’s arrival on the scene was affirming (Sweeet Love ❤) and prepared people for Toni and others who vibe on the lower register. 😍 So I interpreted this differently than most.
@@CeliniacForLifeThey are absolutely contraltos with 3-4 octave range. They can push themselves as Altos but both of their comfort levels are firmly in the lower registers which gives them their distinctive rich, husky almost masculine voices (hallmarks of contraltos).

And if that’s the case, Phyllis Hyman also owes the legendary Nancy Wilson a check (jazz artist) & Anita Baker would also owe the legendary Sara Vaughn a check(blues & jazz artist). Toni has always acknowledged Anita and talked about how she took some of her adlibs. Some of the songs on Toni's first album were actually giving to Anita and she told the person to give them to Toni.

I never thought their voices sounded alike. They both have very distinctive voices where you can recognize them immediately even when you don't know the song. They don't even really sing the same types of music. Anita Baker is traditional R&B and makes a lot more ballads but Toni sings more contemporary R&B with a lot of mid-tempo songs. Also, Anita writes a lot of her own music so it hits a lot different when you're singing your own words. I lived in Vegas and I saw Toni's floor show a few times and I have seen Anita at the Essence Fest and Tom Joyner cruise. They even perform differently, they are apples and oranges, there's no need to pit them against each other.
Plus Anita Baker’s ears are also trained for jazz sing & she does a magnificent job. I know bc I was at one of her concert tours in NYC @the Radio City Music Hall when she dropped her second Album (Caught up in the Rapture) in the mid 80’s. On the other hand, I also saw Toni Braxton’s concert live in NYC @the Beacon Theatre & I don’t remember Toni Braxton singing any type of jazz.

She is so underrated as a entertainer and comedian I love her!!!!The only reason i ever watched the TV Show when she was a secreatary with the will smith girl ashley was because of her!!! She made that show without her i would have never watched it.
