Bresse chickens are a French breed known for their superior meat quality, early maturity, and excellent egg laying. They are the perfect fit for family farms and homesteads, and forage well for their own food in free run pasture systems.

I just hatched a bresse chick and will be getting more hatching eggs from the top breeder in Canada. But that breeder ALSO has "blue" Bresse, and my lil guy is BLUE. Hoping to have a small purebred flock by next spring.

I want the white and the blue bresse chickens. At one point, there were a few breeders of the blue breese in America, but now you can only find the white.

Breezy Birds in Manitoba has blue Bresse. I have one; lays very perfect shaped light brown eggs. (BB is working to white eggs only). I plan on mixing their white Bresse but want some blue in my genetics.

Bresse have many strong points. Hatch lots, cull hard. Keep the best, eat the rest. I'm sorry to see the comments below of disappointed people that have gotten subpar stock. There ARE a few breeders that are not major hatcheries or buy their eggs from anyone and just sell. We are extremely proud of our birds. Are they perfect? Of course not! But I can promise that we are getting better and better birds everytime we work through another grow out group. We work to have a nice carcass weight at 16-22 weeks old after finishing on milk and corn as the French do, averaging right now 4.5-5.5lbs carcass roosters. We do not do capons. I would challenge you all to give real Bresse another try. Find a good breeder. Ask a lot of questions. See videos and pics of their stock from their customers and their own page/web.

Mine aren't! I have one cockerel, he literally came out of the egg and was attacking ME, now he attacks every other bird that he sees, funny thing is that he is by far the smallest out of them. I guess he has a Napoleonic complex.

It is very nice breed. The rooster is little noisy (crow early in the morning) than I like, but not terrible.

I keep reading stuff about the breed not doing so well in the U.S. I can imagine the lack of diversity in the genes to be the problem. When I hear the jabs at hybrid chickens it just reinforces this idea. Imagine a community that intermarries with no outside input. The Bresse is interesting though.

I plan to have my bresse rooster in my marran flock, I'm hoping for a better brooder and different meat flavor in the hybrids.

Bresse are over rated. The perfect chicken should at least produce a marketable carcass, the Bresse does not. Do they offer value to the homestead that just wants to produce their own meat? Certainly, but there will be input costs and it will be hard to market Bresse meat to offset those input costs. Therefore, the Bresse is NOT economically sustainable. I've processed alot of Bresse over the years but have never processed a batch that was worth the food and labour that went into producing it. Bresse is reported to produce superior meat, but then is reported to need to be finished on a corn/milk diet to achieve that meat quality. That doesn't sound like pastured meat to me, it sounds like feedlot meat. Most people seek pastured chicken for the health benefits. Feedlot chicken is not healthier. France has a better alternative to the Bresse, their Label Rouge line of chickens. Label Rouge meat costs 2x conventional chicken and still has 50% of domestic whole bird market! They are really that good! These birds produce superior meat while being finished on pasture. This makes them healthier. They produce a carcass easily marketed to neighbours to help offset input costs. This makes them economically sustainable. In the US, both the Kosher Kings and the Freedom Rangers are examples of Label Rouge style chickens. A homesteader could maintain a breeding flock of either and get excellent results. Breeding culls are marketable, male and female. They are amazing layers, pretty much as good as any ISA Brown. The eggs do cost a bit more to produce because you are feeding a larger hen, but this is pennies in the bigger picture of having marketable carcasses. Even the 6-7 pound spent hens have value! Ground from thighs and breast, instapot type dishes from the wings and drums, and amazing bone broth from the remaining carcass. With Bresse, a homesteader is paying to farm. With the Label Rouge style chickens, the homesteader can get paid to farm.

They are not perfect. They are flighty. They fight more than other breeds. The carcass is questionable rather over rated.

Due to demand in the USA unfortunately there are three/four main hatchery breeders that are selling ALL their eggs, and not culling for quality. That happens with all animals when high demand is tempting.
