He hated everything HBK stood for.. Even though Bret cheated on his wife with Sunny.. Bret portrayed the image of an “honorable” guy with morals… This is why he almost completely failed in the attitude era after a while… Stone Cold, HBK, The Rock and more guys knew how to draw on the “immorality” of fans. Bret couldn’t do that… He was self-centered and pretty possessive over the outcome of matches. He also didnt play the locker room game the best way he could…

And that's one more reason why the WWF let Bret walk. The guy didn't wanna change with the times. Everyone else played ball. And the "Attitude Era" is seen by most fans as the best era in history. Bret was no more a degenerate than HBK. HBK never hid his lifestyle, and his character in wrestling resembled his personal life at the time. Shawn even called Bret out about it, and how big of hypocrite he was. Brett has his own "Sunny Days" on the road.

Bret's biggest mistake was moving to wcw. Wwe had great plans for him. He would had done great and very well as austin's rival on attitude era. The hart foundation was a huge great heel group that could had rivaled the nwo. but when bret decided to move to wcw, wcw wrecked him. Wcw can't really give him a decent role compared to what roles he could had if he didn't left wwe. Then, came the time when goldberg the crappiest wrestler known for not being good on taking care on what he does. Goldberg ruined the great career that bret had. Brett knew the risks of potential injury everytime he stepped into that ring more than any other wrestler at that time because he seen it up close and personal with Owen. I equate his wrestling career ending to you or I losing our jobs and having to start over. I believe you should make as much money as you can as a professional wrestler and then get out of the business. You say the wrestling business never gave anything back to Bret Harte. Well if you're making $50,000 per fight you work three times a year that's $150,000 it's not up to WWE or the UFC or the NFL. Lastly whatever other character and personality flaws Bret freely lists about himself in his book which these authoritarian fans have likely never read so he’s not exactly hiding any deep dark secrets about himself. He tells us he was a bad husband who cheated on Julie his first wife and that Owen was a far more loyal man to his own wife Martha than Bret ever himself was to his and Bret also admits to doing hard drugs with Roddy Piper and the boys on the road likely for the same reason most wrestlers give for doing them which is to combat the physical pain of the job as well it’s often to combat loneliness and boredom.

Have you ever noticed that no one paints Bret Hart in a light where he has been enjoying his health family and happiness for the rest of his life? they always described him as miserable and bitter. Ultimately I think the story Scott Hall tells about how he decorated his house with giant pictures of himself as a shrine to the hit man is the other half of that story. He was also a mark for himself and had it taken away from him and never got over it.

All 3 of them including Shawn basically made Bret’s life hell. They were pretty much constantly in competition with each other for the WWF Title, with occasional interference from Sid or Vader, and all of them really laid the foundations for his ‘97 heel turn and the re-formation of the Hart Foundation with the additions of Davey Boy, Brian Pillman and Owen. With Bret now having family watching his back, the stable dominated. 97 was a great year I feel for WWF.

Hello! Vince was not going to allow another Alundra Blayze-type incident to scathe his company immediately after Survivor Series '97 -- especially at the height of the Monday Night Wars. Bret Hart had to be out of his mind to think that he had any "chance in hell" of leaving that arena in Montreal with the WWE title.

Bret Hart had a hole in the back of his neck and his doctor said the back of his head felt like "hamburger." You do NOT get those injuries from being kicked in the face. Goldberg gave Bret a concussion, but the sum of Bret's pre-existing injuries led to his doctor telling him his career was over. Bret, and the internet, just want to blame Goldberg. Goldberg was unsafe and was too green for the push he had, but he didn't end Bret's career. It seems like he likes to blame other people for his problems. Who knows how much longer Bret's career would have been if he had taken time off and healed. Hell, after that Goldberg match Bret wrestled NINE more times and had matches involving weapons.

Cheated? As much as it is considered a legendary heel promo... Vince was right. Bret screwed Bret. He wants to talk about integrity but the reality of the situation is he was more or less holding the promoter's belt ransom. If the promoter wants you to fucking lose the belt on your way out then fucking do what he wants because it is his company. The real world equivalent to what he did would be if your employer sent you to the bank with a deposit. Thing is, you don't like the bank that they use because of its location and a previous situation with one of its employees. So you demand that they switch banks or you are not making the deposit. If you were to do that, your ass would be sitting in a jail cell. Bret is so far removed from reality that this logic would be lost on him. Sure, Shawn may have been a shithead & Bret might be a "Canadian Hero" but if that's who & where the owner of the company wants to go with then you do your fucking job. The only thing I agree with here is that WCW had no idea what they were doing... They put the World title on his ungrateful ass twice and the US title an additional four times. @@TheShadowBrigade You're not exactly wrong but there is a pretty solid difference. When you have an arrangement with your company it should be honored on "both" sides. The bigger issue here is although Bret did refuse to do business, Bret's boss didn't do his job as a boss. Instead the boss played along with the shenanigans as if he too were a part of it. It would be like in your bank scenario in which your employer acknowledges your refusal to make the deposit, but then instead of taking the appropriate disciplinary action as an employer would, they instead send another employee to fight you and take the deposit back which adds to the drama. Which is exactly what happened here. If this was about following procedures then the company should have also followed its own procedure instead of validating what it's employee did by playing along. That's even less professional than what the employee did. The other thing is Bret said he would have dropped it but Shawn being Shawn, Bret said fk him basically. Their boss said his piece but then said to Bret ok and instead plotted and schemed a way around that refusal. Don't employers terminate employees for issues with workplace ethics? If Vince wasn't ok with it then Vince shouldn't have left it up to the employees to figure it out. What employer leaves it up to its employees to dispute over how to handle a bank deposit?

Bret was leaving even he wasn’t screwed... the story would be the exact same for him. He sold out.

@@chop54321 still doesn't stop the fact Owen died and forever altered the wrestling business. We could speculate all day, but facts are facts. And Bret was over AND the champ, and had no interest in losing it. So, when exactly was he going to leave?

@@chop54321 ill give you that. Doesn't quite add up as to why he was so mad and KOed the boss though. And really who knows if Bret would've really left. He loved the WWE. His brother wrestled there. I think what Bret was really looking for was a fresh outlook. Fresh storylines. Fresh matches, opponents etc. And watching WCW steal the ratings and become a wrestling giant themselves does help the fact. But eh, who knows.

@@gigistephens4633 Gary, he had already signed the WCW contract the week before. He was locked into WCW before the day of the PPV. He was leaving no matter what. That’s why WWE needed him to drop the title, but he refused. The Screwjob had absolutely nothing to do with him leaving.

Yes Bret you got screwed, but damn can you admit that you were fricking difficult to work with at the end? No champ before him got to just hand the belt over when they're leaving the company. Everyone loses, but he didn't think he had to do it? 24 years later I side more with Vince than Bret.

If the roles were flipped and Shawn was the one leaving they would've sided with Bret. When you're leaving the company all of that "paying back the favor" goes out of the window. Basically, I don't think the company is under any obligation to comply with a wrestler's wishes on how he wants to lose the title if he's leaving.

I loved how he used his athleticism in ways that made sense. His matches still hold up.

I actually met him a few times at wrestling meet n greets. He is a class act and treats his fans like gold we talked like he and I were friends. Fond memories

I'd love to meet Bret too, just to give him thanks for years of his excellent matches. He's a man of great integrity and dignity. (You can understand this if you read his book.) He's the best there is, was, or ever will be. It wasn't a gimmick, it was just the truth. (in my eyes)

When exactly should he have been the face of WCW? 1997? That was Sting's time. 1998? Goldberg. 1999? He was already way past his prime and DDP was way more popular than him. 2000? Booker T's time. 2001? WCW was dead.

You do make a good point but in 1997 to about 2001 the face of world championship wrestling was Hulk Hogan sting and Goldberg in the NWO even Ric Flair and The Four Horsemen were really big at that time. Even though Bret the Hitman Hart was one hell of a star when I came to wrestling he was more of a star and the early 90s you win the Attitude Era of the WWE happen he kind of fizzled out. Because in those days but like 1997 to 2001 people love Stone Cold Steve Austin Triple H and D-Generation X and Bret the Hitman Hart his character wasn't resonating I don't think with the crowd like it was an early 90s when he would go and give his sunglasses to a kid. I would say the early 90s Bret Hart was one of the biggest stars to ever compete. But we will always say these guys are worth millions of dollars it's up to them what they do with their money and if they're not financially fit after they retire that's their problem for living a luxury lifestyle you can make millions of dollars every year. And live like you make 40,000 and you will always have money that's what the most rich people say they do
