I had never thought about using oil white as an 'undercoat' for the slappychoppy thing but now I might have to try it on a few old minis to test it out.

Thanks for introducing the Titanium White oils' "slap chop" undercoat. I have begun to experiment with it as opposed to using the acrylic counterpart. I am sure this will be a welcome addition to my painting skills' arsenal.

So much great units from OPR. and they keep releasing great models. The 3d printing is still in the Stone Age of at home printing and I’m really excited to see what the next 5-10 years will bring.

Agreed. If FDM printing can 10x the printing resolution we'll have no mess color minis. Of course I'll still paint my own. KPMs!

I am thinking about trying the following: white primer, oil wash+cleaning as a start for my slapshop. I think it will be faster and cleaner, especially since I can limit the parts I whant darker.

I've been thinking about trying oil paints for dry brush (err.. wet brush? oil brush? slick brush? Oil paint isn't very "dry"). Nice to see that others have thought of the same as well! :)
@bernstea0
@bernstea0 7 месяцев назад
"Slick-brush," perfect! I agree. It works great for ordinary dry brush purposes too, say a final dry brush over a textured base, if you don't mind waiting a day for it to dry. Certainly if the dry brushing is a last step on whatever part you're working on. Just goes on better for some applications. Thanks for watching!! - KPMs

Like the oil underpainting! I think for him a dark brown prime resuling in a more sepia underpainting would have made your live easier with the skin and added a bit more vibrancy overall. But this is still a great result! Will definitely eperiment with this. I usually do a acrylic base followed by oils but now I want to try the other way round
@bernstea0
@bernstea0 7 месяцев назад
Great suggestion for brown prime. Will try that. Sometimes I just go ahead and paint a couple of layers of ivory over the skin areas after the dry brushing and then the skin takes the speedtrast paints (something like Guilliman Flesh) as usual. Thanks for watching!!
@ImreRides
@ImreRides 7 месяцев назад
My main "problem" with slapchop are the desaturated shadows because of the black and white underpainting. Especially when leaning into a colorful paintjob. So I recently experimented with colored basecoats and I really like it @@bernstea0
@southpaw5483
@southpaw5483 7 месяцев назад
@@ImreRides You may wish to experiment with (1) a White Primed model, (2) apply thinned "Black Wash" into recesses, (3) quick White Dry Brush (if any areas are stained from the "Black Wash" and (4) Speed/Contrast Paint.

Excellent advice, I'm going to go out this weekend and purchase a tube of the whitest white oil paint I can find at my local craft store. I apologize if I missed it but do you thin down your "speedtrast" paints with either of their respective mediums before applying ro the mini or do you go straight from the pot/dropper palette? Thanks and you've got a new subscriber. Be well.
@bernstea0
@bernstea0 7 месяцев назад
Generally, for speedtrast over slapchop I don't thin them because I'm putting on a very thin coat so it is transparent enough. I didn't thin any of the speedtrast paints in the video. However, a few speedtrast paints are very opaque. Test them on your thumbnail. If a thin coat is so opaque that the white of the slapchop won't show through, you can think them with water. Thanks for watching and subscribing!! KPMs!

I'm really having a heck of a time getting the oil to dry, even sometimes waiting a week and it still comes off on my fingers. Unsure why, I even put them under constant air circulation. Any suggests would be awesome!
@bernstea0
@bernstea0 Месяц назад
Sorry for the very late reply. Oils are rub-offable even weeks and weeks later. Thats why they are so easy to blend. But, you can paint over them with regular acrylic paints 24 hours (even less) after you put them on.
@rth-s4g
@rth-s4g Месяц назад
I am trying this method out on a few test models. So far though, even after a full day, I find that the oil paint layer is very slow to fully set and can still rub off a little. Do you or anyone know if that's normal and okay to paint over with the acrylic?
@bernstea0
@bernstea0 Месяц назад
sorry for the late reply. Yes, the oils will still be rub-offable even a few days later. BUT - you can usually paint over it with regular acrylic paint 24 hrs after you apply it. Sometime I paint over it just a few hours after.
@HasteHobbies

this might work better if your primed white-ish and covered the mini in semi-thinned oil paint and wiped away the excess with a makeup sponge. You would get the darkness in the recesses and I think would have even less...spotty-ness
@bernstea0
@bernstea0 7 месяцев назад
...so you're saying start with white all over and darken the recesses with a dark oil wash, wiping off the excess. Is that the idea?

I'll have to try this for underpainting! Also, try lightly moistening your acrylic drybrush before use; it fixes the streaking issue very well

Acrylic was more contrasty
@bernstea0
@bernstea0 7 месяцев назад
Agreed. The Oil spreads around on the model as you drybrush so it ends up thinner on the sharp edges but provides more variation in value from black to pure white, i.e. some grays in between. What I've done in the past is let it dry a day and then do another quick coat (30 secs or less per model), and that brightens up the sharpest edges to compare with the bright white you get with acrylic. But if you want pure two-tone, only deep blacks and bright whites, then acylic works best. Thanks for watching!! KPMs!
