Hey Geoff, we’ll done. Very good presentation, no bs about forcing viewers to watch long drag out boring bits, straight to the point. I appreciate it. Get a proper mic if you could for future vids, I thought I have gone deaf! My Cafe Roma has been going for 15 yrs, still is going. Only needed a descale after something was blocked inside the guts. Yup, only ever descaled once in 15 yrs! Either I’m hopelessly lazy ( probably) or the machine is damn good. Cheers!
Just got a 2nd one for free tonight. Heats up and you can hear the pump run, but no pressure. Will get into it in the next few days. It was worth getting for me for the extra portafilter and the single shot cup. Came with the espresso cups and the steam cup.
Thats a sweet score, especially for the free extras. Try priming the pump, it sounds like it might be hydrolocked. This is when air gets into the pump lines and it can't produce any pressure. If you have a syringe or a turkey baster, you might be able to get it going again by forcing water into the intake lines. Failing that, maybe a good cleaning would do the trick! Good luck!
Thanks. My 800ES machine had the exact same issue. Toke it apart and found the heating coil connection was corroded just like yours. Fixed it with your method but not sure how long it would last.
Just bought this machine second hand. When priming the pump with a baster I can get water to push through the group head and steam wand just fine. However, the pump sounds quiet when I do so and will not suck water on its own after I try prime it. Is the pump broken, or do you think it is a different issue I could fix? Thanks!
Hi Geoffrey, thank you very much for this video mate,i have the same machine and the steam wand doesnt run steam but steamy water and the temp of the water doesnt seem to be so hot,so ill give it a go as you did and fingerscross...ill let you know the results Cheers
Have the same machine had the same exact issue. The blue wire connector was corroded so much it was almost gone. makes me wonder how many of those are being thrown away by their owners when it "stopped working" when it's such an easy fix...
@@gpereir4 at least it was old.. More than 12 years of service. I repaired it once maybe 3 months back but didnt solder correctly. This time I ran an extra wire through the connector and tab before soldering it.
Do you have a video of how you replaced the male and female ends? Mine has the same problem and it looks like both will need to be replaced. (I don’t have any tools for soldering or know how)
Scott McDonald Thanks Scott, good luck with your repair. Try pulling a full reservoir in and out of its position a few times to try and encourage some bubbles out of the line. If that fails, take the line off the bottom of the reservoir connection that goes to the pump, and try to force water through it with a turkey baster bulb or syringe (I use an oral medicine syringe). Good luck!
@@gpereir4 thanks for the tip, I get it to produce steam from the frothed wand, when I switch to coffee mode it sounds like it is trying but nothing comes out. Will try forcing water up into it tomorrow.
Hey mine has an extra hose for pressure relief it seems. Does your machine not have that? Did you delete it or would you recommend i delete. I think im having pressure issues and ecess water running through to drip pan
Im actually not sure. I repaired this for a friend a few years ago, I cant recall if there was an extra hose. I didn't do any modification that I can remember...
Would anybody know why my pump is just humming and not actually pumping? I did not use it for some time and it was working before was stored away. Now would not pump! Thanks.
Could be hydrolocked due to an air bubble in the pump. The best way to force water into the pump as its trying to run. Try taking the intake hose off and injecting water into it with a syringe with the pump running. This primes it and gets it running again.
@@estelledesjarlais6183 Do you mean what type of connector to look for? The connection type on the cable is called a female 1/4" spade connector. On the heating element is a male 1/4" spade terminal. You should be able to find these at any hardware store. If you cant make a new connector work, you can strip the connector off the wire and solder the bare wire to the terminal of the heating element. Hope this helps!
is there any concern with heat and the female spade connectors i thought they need to be plain with no insulation as they may not take the heat also do you use high temp shrink wrap or will any shrink wrap do?
Hey! Not sure about the heat concern. This was mainly a quick repair to get the guy going again. That being said, On higher end espresso machines, the spades are usually insulated. Sometimes this makes the insulation a bit brittle, but never melts. The temp is never that high outside of the boiler/heat block. I just used cheap automotive heat shrink. I think that should do for most applications. I have had that melt before, but that was because I was using a wire that wasn't the proper gauge.
Hey thanks for your video! I noticed that my machine is making the same loud hallow thumping noise as yours is when you use the steam wand. I just got this second hand and noticed that in other videos of the machine it’s not doing that. The water is hot but that noise doesn’t sound good! Was wondering what you think!
Thank you! The thumping noise is normal when the machine is heating to steam. It’s injecting small amounts of water into the heating block to be turned into steam. It’s also normal for the machine to get hot up top. It’s an intentional hot surface for the purpose of heating cups.
Thanks for this video, very helpful. I have a same model Espresso Machine, not used too much, just found no steam output recently. After viewing your video, I opened the top cover and tried to find the reason. All connections look good and vibration pump also works properly. When switched to brewing, hot water comes out and can hear the pump sound. So pump is good, heating block no issues. When switched to steam, no pump sound, in the beginning a little bit steam comes out from the wand and then no further steam. It looks no tube block/clogging inside (already descaling using vinegar). My understanding is no power supply under steam mode and the pump power is supplied from PCB (M connection with white color wire), I checked the voltage only 1.6V when steaming. Do you think it's the reason or I should check other points? Appreciate if you can give some thoughts. Thanks!
I am not sure what else you could try. I don't really have much experience troubleshooting PCB boards. I guess just check that the switch connection is operating properly. You could check the terminals at the pump under steam mode to see if there is voltage being pulsed to the pump? Other than that, not sure what to check!
@@gpereir4 Thanks for the reply. I checked both Micro Switchs for water and steam, looks both working properly. Under brewing mode (switching to right side), the pump is supplied 120V AC from right switch and heating is controlled by the rear Thermostat (98C). Under steam mode (switching to left side), the pump is supplied less and regulated voltage from PCB through white wire (M connection) and heating is controlled by the front Thermostat (140C). I'll further check and figure out how the PCB works and find the reason of no voltage output under steam mode.
@@gpereir4 I got a PCB from a broken Breville Cafe Roma and replaced my board, now it works properly. When switched to left side (steaming), a slow pumping sound could be heard and steam comes out from wand as normal. I checked the voltage from PCB to the pump through the right side micro switch and it shows around 5V (previously only got 1.6V which maybe too low to push the pump piston to move). So glad to make it works again. Thanks for your help.
Hi , I have the same machine but the problem is it overheats very quickly and causes a vapor block . And won’t let water through . Any ideas on what part could be the issue ?
Geoffrey, have the same espresso maker and was in storage so my wife wanted an espresso but it did not pump any water out. I took the bottom filter out, cleaned it in white vinegar and brushed it clean with a dish brush. Still no water. What would be the next step? Thanks!
Hey Scott, it sounds like the lines may have dried up when the machine was in storage. This can actually prevent the pump from moving water due to "hydro-lock". if filling the reservoir with water and running the pump for a while doesn't work, then you have to manually force water into the pump. To do this, remove the water reservoir. You should see a port where the reservoir connects. You will need to force water into this port with the pump switched on. You can use a syringe or a turkey baster, or something similar. If this works, you should hear the tone of the pump change as it fills with water. At this point, shut off the pump, put the reservoir back in, and run the pump again. It may take a few rounds to work, but this should kick-start the pump into moving water again. Hope this helps!
@@gpereir4 Geoffrey, thanks so much for this idea. I was told by Breville to decalsify the unit. Of course nothing happened. I had read someone on RU-vid doing this on a different maker. Thanks! I will try it out.
@@gpereir4 Geoffrey, the good news is water is coming out but it seems to be also leaking out the bottom, too. I'm wondering if that's water at the bottom of the well where the the port is.? Accidentally knocked the reservoir container and had a big mess with vinegar to boot. Will try tomorrow after the flood dries up.
@@scottrosenthal3437 Good that water is coming out! Hope the leak is easily identified and fixed. It is quite possibly leaking at the bottom of the reservoir where the port connects to the tubing leading to the pump. At about 4:06 in the video, you can see where the hose attaches. I would check to see that the clamp there is still tight around the fitting. Good luck!
I'm going to take look at mine, but it's a weird problem. When i start brewing i hear the motor, almost nothing comes out, i hear the pressure build up until it "blows" out from where you put the coffee and makes a mess. like its clogged, but i used a product to clean the machine (2-3 reservoirs of water + that stuff) and it's still the same problem.... and the handle where i put coffee in i used a small needle intended to unclog it and its not clogged.. sorry about my weird explaination hope you understand and can help me
Yeah it is definitely clogged with coffee. Take a screwdriver and take the screen out of the grouphead to see if it is clogged up behind there with old coffee. The products used to clean espresso machines that you mix into the tanks are typically descalers. These will take care of lime scale, but to nothing to clear coffee buildup. You want to try using a detergent like Urnex Cafiza to clear the blockage. Hope you get the machine working!
Hi i have schaerer coffee joy and it give me error for( heating up timeout steam level ) do you know what's the problem ? my shop flooded recently and it was working for a week and after that it stop keep giving me heating timeout steam level and doesn't let me touch any other botton
I have a similar problem but not with heat.. just water spatter from the steamer before steam produces... also water is leaking onto the counter.. reservoir is fine when standing on its own, but if installed in machine (turned off) it slowly leaks beneath... any advice?
Its usually normal to get a small amount of water before steam comes out. However, if you are getting more water than you think you should be, there could be a corroded connection to the heating element just like mine, preventing it from heating up quickly to produce the steam. The water on the counter sounds like a leaking gasket on connection between the water reservoir and the machine, where it plugs in when you set it down in. Take a look at both the reservoir and down in the machine where it attaches, and see if you see a rubber gasket or O-ring in either spot. this may need to be changed.
@@gpereir4 Mine leaks from the front middle, down the front side, as the coffee is coming, and doesn't fall in the drain. I've taken it apart from the top and bottom, but not from the front. Can you take off the black section where the coffee comes out?
Hey, i have this thing on my cafe roma that everytime I brew, water and steam start to drip out of the portafilter. Happens almost everytime (not always though). Based on this issue you had, do you think my mahcine may be losing pressure poweR?
Check the thermoblock connections like I dd in this video. The machine I repaired here would heat up enough to make the coffee, but didn't have enough heat to steam. You could have the same problem as in the video.
It's sad to think how many appliances are in landfills because people don't have the basic skills to repair them. I've repaired everything from phones to major appliances often for nothing but my time.
@@gpereir4 Sorry for late reply, just an update to the repair of Cafe Roma, we fixed the faulty board, replace the two IC, the ones controlling the steaming function. FYI Many thanks again
Yes absolutely. There is a lot of plastic in this machine, in very close contact to the thermoblock. All the water lines are PFTE plastic as well instead of copper tubing.
@@Spade193 I wouldn't get one new. Used, maybe, but I wouldn't be buying a new one. There are much better new options, even from Breville. What's your budget range?
