I have a Breville Cafe Roma Espresso maker model ESP8 XL /A that stopped working. At first the pump sounded like it was working but would then simply stop pushing anything through. No crema, nothing. After cleaning thoroughly, descaling, and even replacing the silicon gasket, I realized there might be a pressure loss somewhere in the internal tubing system.
It was a deteriorated, heat-damaged zip-tie that connected a water tube right near the heating block. It had been had broken down, resulting in a pressure loss at that tube end.

Thank you! My problem was exactly the same - but I simply had to prime the pump. I took it all apart - like you … but I didn’t need to. Instead I opened the bottom … disconnected the water feed from the bottom valve, and forced water (while it was on) into the intake tube (just used my mouth). It took alot of pressure and then all of a sudden the water came running out. It was a bit dangerous, there is exposed electric when you open the bottom AND I had it on its side so the water could have sprayed the electric. That’s all. I think I caused the problem - the machine was dry - not used in 5 months.

This comment helped me out too! Thanks. To add some details: unplug power, remove the six bottom screws (not the feet ones), detach the hose connecting the water tank to the pump, I attached a bike pump to the hose to achieve the pressure needed, you’ll hear a rush of air once you’ve unblocked it. And you’re done!

Thank you for the wonderful tutorial! This looks to be my issue and I'm very excited to have such a simple solution.

I found the most common issue is the loss of pressure from the gasket developing a crack and losing pressure. If you hear a pop or a fizzing sound as the Roma is building pressure after you activate it, it's the gasket most likely. You can get others on amazon easily. I keep extras. Good luck, hope it helps.

You’re the best dude! An absolute legend! You saved my Breville. I thought it was done for. And if this happened to me 3 weeks ago before you posted this I would’ve been shit outta luck. Thank you.

Amazing! This was the video I was looking for the context fits perfectly and i was getting exactly the same symptoms. In my case i recently started leaving the heater on 24/7 using the cup holder waarming area as a surface on which to try and germinate cactus and avocado seeds wrapped in moist paper towel in a Tupper wear container thinking it would be a great way to keep the germinating container ~30-40 Celsius @ near 100% humidity. Going to attempt this repair tomorrow. thank you! I'm on a budget and literally had a cheapo but still overpriced replacement espresso machine in a shopping cart in another tab and i was vacillating mostly because of the allegations that marketplace's laborforce leverages forced labor from yeghuar "re-education" camps. glad dicided to dig on troubleshooting before tossing it. as my little cafe roma has been the real MVP of my daily cafeine productivity since 2018

Edit: It did solve my problem but a new one appeared. Some water is leaking inside the machine so I need find the reason. I like when appliances are simple and easy to repair. Buying the new hightech stuff is asking for problems imo. Your explanations were clear and precise and I can see that you knew your subject since you shot everything in one shot. No editing, no advertising just the informations I was looking for. I'll check if that the issue our machine have. Thanks for your tutorial, you did something really useful!

Just a heads up, the motor itself only lasts about 7-8 yrs then it dies. Can be replaced but you have to find it. Likely easier in the U.S. Good thing this unit is a good value overall though, in case you replace with new one.

Sorry it didn’t work out for you man. Sometimes the pressure loss is fixed by replacing the silicone gasket. That worked for me once.

OK ... I just checked and tried the OP solution, everything was in great condition. Then I checked the hose at the base of the machine and there were water bubbles. Blew the water out of the hose. Put it all back together and still no water. Note: machine hasn't been used in a few years, but seals and hoses are still soft and pliable. Thoughts?

How does one replace that gasket? Mine has the newer design with no zip ties to melt.

Hope it works, only got a sip of coffee this morning. It did this once before but then worked again for another year without doing it. I'm on second day no coffee so tonight it gets opened up.

So the basket (large as I like string coffee) I’ve always used stopped working. I cleaned the machine and the basket still no luck then decided to use a smaller basket and it works but unfortunately my coffee is not strong enough as the basket doesn’t hold enough coffee. This morning i tried large one still no luck (pressure build up but still not working). I’m now thinking it’s the rubber gasket that I may have replace even though it work with the smaller one. Can anyone tell where and what size to buy for this same machine in the video. Thank you

I'm not sure if my machine had the same problems with pressure, but my espresso came out with no crema for sure, and the steam wand dripped slowly without steam. (However, there's a bunch of steam that ran out after I turned it back to stand by) How do you know if it's a pressure problem? And do you think the situation above is the same as yours?
@MangySquirrel
@MangySquirrel Год назад
no cream is no fun - that's the best part of the coffee so I feel for you. I think you may still be having a pressure loss problem somewhere along the line but a very small/slow one. Regarding the wand - I find it helps to let the wand put out steam for about a minute before I actually try frothing my milk or coffee. The wand needs time to heat up and build pressure as well. Hope this helps. good luck. Also the wand needs descaling and you have to put that needle thing up there every so often to clean it out.

I know it's been 3 months since you asked the question, but I'll put this here for anyone else who may be having this issue. The wand can get plugged with dry milk, if not cleared properly after streaming. I find this happens most often when my son uses the machine. I use a long, straight, roofing staple to clear the blockage. I gently push the staple into the wand hole. Don't do this if you already have pressure built up, or a stream of hot water may come jetting out! Once the blockage is cleared, reheat the machine and turn on the steam to see if this has solved your issue.

Hi My Cafe Roma makes a pop sound and the water/coffee pours out around the pod. I took the top off and the area you talked about looks fine. Any other suggestions?

Doesn't that mean there is liquid in the bottom that escaped that? I just had my first problem right now, and there was like an oscillation and loss of pressure.

Most pressure loss problems are from a cracked or broken silicon gasket. Can buy new ones on amazon.

The seals on mine are all fine, but in the line between the pump and the heater there is a junction that leads down to a square white box. Water makes it up to this junction, but not past the junction into the heater. Instead water comes out the bottom of the white box into the drip tray at the bottom. Any idea how to fix this?
@MangySquirrel

I’m wondering if there is a seal break or block at the junction or in the line towards the heater?

Might I ask a question? How did you get the screw out that you mentioned at 1:10? I've spent the past half hour fighting that thing and there's no way. Does it have Loctite on it? I've tried WD-40, I've tried IPA, I've tried oil, I've tried giving it a hard stare...nothing is working.

sorry I didn't see your question. I had to use a short screwdriver to unscrew. After that, you can try to use the edge of a flat head screwdriver to pry it loose.

try a flat head screwdriver to pry it loose after you've unscrewed the little screw there.
