We're back with another video this week and this time we brewing a homage to London Pride! It's an all grain recipe milled fresh to order and we're using the BIAB (Brew in the bag) method.
The system we using is our new 35l brew kettle with a 2.4kw element which, when coupled with a grain bag, makes an incredibly approachable system to brew all grain beer at home.
This method for brewing allows us to use the "no space" method where we use all the water we need for the mash, further simplifying the process.
Stick around to the end and see how we did brewing this recipe and grab the kit to make it yourself here: www.themaltmil...

Fuller's Grist for London Pride is as follows from 2012 : Palt Malt 94.70%, Crystal Malt 5.05%, Chocolate Malt 0.25%. I also have other years 1951, 1955, 1959 ,1968.

Excellent video guys as an all grain brewer for many years, I wish I had seen this video years ago before spending money on single vessel sell in ones! I do now have a 36 litre 3V system - which I tend to use as a single vessel BIAB! Ironic hey! Cheers

I started with a 5 Gall Burco Boiler 45-50 yrs ago but I Mashed in a Plastic Bucket inside another plastic Bucket (a lauter Tun arrangement a la CJ Berrys book) and a 50W Fish Tank Heater inside. From memory 151°F until Starch Endpoint and even without the heater, which I stopped bothering with after a while, the temperature did not drop more than a couple of degrees. Good to see an emphasis on entry level instead of the £1000+ systems. When my GrainFather gives up the ghost I will revert to my Cooler method although I could do with another Boiler.

Adding this one to my next order guys. LP is my go to. Never disappoints. I'm less interested in seeing how it compares to the real LP, and more interested in seeing how it compares to my own LP clone!

There was an episode on The Brewing Network podcast with John Keeling not long after he left Fullers as head brewer and he outlined the recipe in very precise detail. There have also been photo's of the Fullers logbook for London Pride/ESB/Golden Pride/Chiswick Bitter. So there is no need to bother with random internet recipes.

I’m thinking this is going to be nice than LP! Bring on the malt. Hops have had their limelight. Will be brewing this and can’t wait. Thanks for all the effort!

Couldn't agree more. Hop bombs have oversaturated the market. Need some of that malty bitter-sweetness!

I was thinking you could include some acid malt when sending to Scottish brewers that have high tap water Ph over 8 (mine is sometimes 9 which leads to astringent bitterness from the grains) or a tiny dropper of lactic acid like the kind in the Covid tests.

Great video as always. I'm just about to start doing biabs, how did you manage not scorch the bag on the element when mashing? Did you put anything over the top? Also, do you do jackets for the kettle? I brew in the garage and need ways to save heat from getting out!
@themaltmiller8438
@themaltmiller8438 Год назад
Hey! We didn't have any issues with scorching on the bag, the element was only turned on for a few moments at a time to bump the temp back up. We did stir whist doing this to move the heat around. No jackets as of yet for the kettles, it was really chilly on the day we brewed and we were supposed at how little the temp needed to be adjusted though. Glad you enjoyed the video 🍻

Great. Would have interesting to make a small beer with the residual. Ie. Boil up again. Wonder what the taste is like. Just a thought.

Nice setup! Does the bag touch the heating coil?
@themaltmiller8438
@themaltmiller8438 2 месяца назад
It can do, yes. There are ways to resolve this but as song as you're not leaving the element on whilst the bag is in it should be fine. Care needs to be taken if you need to heat the mash at all though.

can you do a breakdown on that kettle? I have a nice 302 stainless steal kettle from a local home brew shop and want to add an element like that

Very interesting, but, as an absolute beginner, I was lost with the jargon and abbreviations. What's the best source for further information and instructions on this type of brewing and use of a kettle system?

Did you add the AMS to the water cold or hot?

Just as it's warming up or once it's hot.

Great video! Recipe sounds good and I liked seeing the method. Do you need to protect the bag from the element?
@themaltmiller8438
@themaltmiller8438 Год назад
No not really, in our testing as long as the element isn't turned on for too long and you are stirring during this re-heating time its all good! This does depend on the quality of the bag you use, the one we used here is superior than some you can buy

Great vid gents. I don't do all grain and was wondering if I had the same yeast and hop profile , what ME from the Muntons CYO range you'd recommend to get a nod towards London Pride. TIA

Probably one of the Maris Otter and Vienna, so you get a darker colour. 👍🏻
