Brewing With Underwhelming Commanders | Episode 31 

My favourite build for Tawnos is Superfriends! Turn planeswalkers into artifacts and copy their loyalty abilities. There's a good number of untap synergies too

Saryth is great built around big tramplers. Deathtouch + trample is basically unblockable! I rarely play my deck anymore because it's so brutal. Great underwhelming commander!

Some notes on Tawnos from a person playing the deck since he came out you missed. 1. The deck is really mana hungry, I'm running 18 sources of ramp and I never have too much. A lot of the best stuff you can do in this deck involves copying 7 mana ETB's and activated ability's, and you almost always have a plethora of mana sinks to use. Defiantly one of those decks where you can have 11 mana and wish you had 12. 2. Missed some of the best cards in the deck, starting with the some of the best mana rocks for the deck, mind stone, commander's sphere, hedron archive and dreamstone hedron. the ability to draw card's is really good on cards that help you dump your hand and they work super well with Tawnos to boot. Transmogrifying wand and Helvault are also nuts in the deck especially the former, killing a total of six creatures is just so much. Trading post is also a must include, just the recursion alone is nuts, getting two of the pieces you need from the yard can really win you games. Lastly battel-ball is just an excellent bomb to finish games, which brings me to my last point... 3. Finally I think the best finishing plan for the deck is working with the token sub-theme built around Brudiclad from the percon. Your anyways running the enablers for them cus there great with Tawnos, both go-wide cards such as the aforementioned battel-ball, Myr turbine and thopter assembly, as well as big token makers such as Phyrexian processor and prototype portal. Brudiclad adds so much finishing power on their own its unreal, and its not just them, steel overseer, sharding sphinx and Saheeli's directive are all excellent cards in the deck and can end games in this overwise very grindy deck.

Tawnos is pretty sick, really fun ability. Tbh his artwork is really what held me back from building him

i would love to make a saryth type deck in selesnya with Lady Caleria or Cattie Brie of Mithral Hall at the helm. sorta like an archer/deathtouch/untap theme

I'm glad you're showing nihiloor. Tried him as a replacement for sen triplets in my theft deck to make people not as salty... It just really didn't work for me but it's nice to hear it could be better if built around more. It was so difficult to have enough creatures on board to make nihiloor worth it for me

I'd love to see your full take on Tawnos. When he was spoiled I also thought he was really strong

With Tawnos it goes likes this: 1 build the deck with all the fun triggers you want to copy. 2 realize the deck is mana hungry AF 3 add more ramp and add stuff that gets you colored mana 4 realize you can have 10~12 mana 5 realize that you better be playing, Eldrazi, Omniscience or anything else that's more impactful and one sided than a Coveted Jewel. 6 Change Tawnos for the Saheeli that came with the precon to help you play Eldrazi, Omniscience or anything else that's more impactful. 7 Shelf Tawnos. That's it.

I use Phyrexian Infiltrator in Aminatou with a theft subtheme. It's yet to really go off but you have to have pets. ;) The good thing is that even against blue players you can use it to remove creatures from combat. You can also spoil blocks designed to trade creatures. It's pretty flexible in theory.

Reconnaissance is a must include in Nihiloor in my opinion.

First! I’ve always thought Tawnos was underrated. That can be a powerful ability considering how many good artifacts there are nowadays.

Please try an underwhelming commander build with Kiyomaro, First to Stand as a proof-of-concept on white card draw. Yes it's basically voltron, but I don't think this has been a workable angle until recently.

Archangel of thune goes really well in a nihiloor deck too, though it has gotten sorta expensive lately

Ephemerate would work with Phyrexian Infiltrator and Gilded Drake.

Yo, I feel like Tawnos should've been #1 now that you've shown all the nifty artifact shenanigans you can do with him. And this is after I voted for the Viper's Fang lol. Now I wanna quit my two other decks I'm working on just to crank out a Tawnos deck to jank around with. 😁

The only creature close to Trample Deathtouch is a completed Kaldra, I like to call his ability Exiletouch

i recently built a dynaheir deck that just feels like a better tawnos lol. given i need to build around abilities that need 4 or more mana... but honestly it feels a lot more fun that way. Untapping and tapping dynaheir 4 times and not needing to pay mana for it feels good. edit: copying triggered abilities does seem pretty cool doe

How about a secret commander Tesuko Umezawa for Nihiloor 🤔 Black has enough creatures with a 1 on the butt, but 4 or 5 Power. So you steal bigger creatures with your Nihiloor, but fool your opponents with this. You goal is to find Tetsuku and smack a lot for cheap cost 😇

I built Tawnos and it's the most fun deck I've ever made. It's not the most serious deck as I just do silly fun stuff in it. It's all fun and games until i start copying things like Lux Cannon and Bosh 😊

The problem with these great commanders not being played is that there is always a constant mix of veteran players and newbies... Newbies dont understand the game and the effects of removal and/or countermagic, or how cards/commanders like these ar egreat because they teeter on being removal themselves.

Tawnos looks good but i think people see izzet and imediately think spellslinger

nihiloor is fun... as part of the 99. Not a good commander.

04:23 That won't happen ever, 2 colored mana for Tawnos, 2 Colored mana for the trigger, 6 mana for the Coveted Jewel, that's 10 mana, with 10 mana you should be casting Omniscience or any other more impactful thing. That's why Tawnos is not popular as a commander or as anything, it's too mana hungry.

Tawnos might be underwhelming but definitely not underpowered
