The Brewster Buffalo was one of the first monoplane aircraft operated by the US Navy and Marine Corps, and the first modern monoplane naval fighter. It replaced the biplanes of the 1920s and early thirties. It was the result of developments that took place in two decades following the First World War. This video begins our examination of this aircraft and its combat career by looking at the background of its development, and the evolution of naval aircraft in the 1920s and 30s.

Thanks for taking my suggestion, the Buffalo was a much maligned aircraft. In 1941/42 no aircraft could withstand the capabilities and pilots of the IJN and the superb Zero, but the Finnish did quite well with it, just as the Soviets did with the P-39 on the Eastern Front. In its proper performance envelop the Buffalo performed well for its design and the time it was conceived. Keep up the great work. I'm looking forward to part 2. Cheers

The problem was mostly tactical. The US aircraft were stronger and better armored so could dive faster and pull higher g loads on recovery at high speed. The Zero could climb and turn better at low speed. So high speed diving attacks couldn’t be followed by a Zero but dogfights were a quick way to get killed. Level bombers were sitting ducks for Zeros but dive bombers were not.

Knowing the final and third version of the Brewster was heavier than the 2nd version which was equal to the F4F

You asked for suggestions.: I just finished your SBD series (It was good btw) and the only thing I can say is to have more pictures and don't linger on them as long during the videos. Keep it moving.

Thanks for the feedback. One of the reasons I am using the shorter format is to have more visual variety in videos. I'm glad you enjoyed the SBD series, there's still a few episodes to go wherever I can find t the time

The age of "The Great Waldo Pepper" movie, when Barnstormers brought chills and thrills to country folk. (Not to mention Hollywood's "The Great War in the Air" movies, culminating in the silent epic "Wings.")

Very well made series and quite informative. Unfortunately the monotonous voice makes it quite a chore to listen to. Switching the video speed to 1.25 does help a bit.
