Great interview. The guy on the right hand of the screen kind of made the point of why we should vote yes with out realising tho. @@coreymesham-pritchard1988 He did. It's in his comment. Right there. Anyways, here are some reasons why leaving the UK would be beneficial for Scotland, each of these also counts as a way we're currently suffering as we cannot truly prosper. Votes that better reflect the Scottish people. In countless votes such as the 2016 EU referendum Scotland as a nation voted against Brexit yet we were given it anyway. Scotland has the means to become one of the wealthiest countries. Recent statistics show that Scotland has the highest tax contribution in the UK. We also give away most of our oil to England and we spent millions a year on trident, something that has no purpose in this modern day. Control over reserved powers. In 1997 when the referendum for Scottish devolution went through we gained the first amount of control over our country in hundreds of years and even then it isn't full control. Fuck, we've only had our own parliament for 20 years now. We would get control over our own welfare system. This is incredibly important as over a million people in Scotland are living in poverty. That's 1/5 of our entire country. Do you understand how crazy that is? We're wasting money on Englands nuclear toys while Scottish people are starving on the streets. Going back to our North Sea oil, all tax money from our oil is going straight to the UK's pocket. If we're not in the UK then we won't have to follow the US into Iran. Basically, any illegal war that happens such as what happened in Iraq could potentially happen again and with tensions rising with Iran it's becoming a possibility. Control over immigration laws. This one is also quite important, a lot of foreign workers are being denied access to Scotland because of the UK's immigration laws that we have no real say in. It also means we can allow in more Syrian refugees and other refugees who are fleeing from really shitty situations. Bringing in more migrants will balance the workflow with elderly people, different from popular belief, immigration is actually a good thing and will help our nation thrive. Lastly, we would still have good relations with the rest of the UK. They are our nearest neighbors and it would be as it is now but on a more equal basis.

43% of the Scottish electorate voted to leave the UK. The vast majority of us were under the age of 55, and you don't need a weather man to tell you which way that wind is blowing. That's a bit of context for the English users in the comment section who might get the impression that Scottish independence is unpopular or unlikely to happen. I am Aussie of Scottish ancestry (1850's), Irish and Northern Irish heritage (1840)'s and Endlands Heritage (1816 - 1830s)...convicts and free settlers. The reality is you are a Island nation. England and Scotland will always need a trading relationship with Europe whether it is in the EU or not. Scottish Independence is a big hill to climb...being a fully indepent country is possible, but then you need to define your trade relationship with Great Britian (England, Wales and Northern Ireland), who will be outside of the European Union, and currently counts for about 60% of Scotland's trade. What are you then going to do with the Scottish/English border...have a hard boarder? Assuming Scottland rejoins the European Union? Would an independent Scotland become a Republic with it's own Scottish Head of State? Or remain a Consitutional Monachy as it is now, eith the Scottish and English Crowns merging about 312 years ago. Australian still have the Queen as the Queen of Australia...for the time being. We had a failed referend on the matter 20 years ago. Indyref2 may happen but do not be too surprised if the endvresuot is the same. Finally the UK outside he RlRlEU dogs have some benefitsctothe people of Scottland, particularly farmers and fishermen.

Scotland was a European nation before it was a British one. I support Scotland becoming independent (and staying in the EU), not for any pernicious, nationalistic reasons but because I see Scotland inside the UK as being a position of managed decline. Westminster quite frankly couldn't care less what happens to Scotland. Why should they? We are a tiny proportion of their problems - their major constituency is the south of England, which is totally different to Scotland. It has different problems which required different solutions. To be honest, when you look at what the UK is currently reduced to with a barely functioning government and shambolic political system - an incompetent global laughing stock, you've really got to wonder how Scotland would do much worse. I very much respect Scotland's ties with England, Wales and NI mainly for historical sentimental reasons - but Scotland and England (and Wales and NI), we need to realise we don't have a lot in common any more politically or, increasingly, economically. Historical sentimentality does not pay the bills and neither does it make up for the huge political gulf that lies between Scotland and the rest of the UK. Let's just part ways as close family. Sharing the same island, trading with each other without need to share the same house and bank account.

First of all I am a proud Scot who voted yes in 2014 (as a protest vote tbh). Since and in light of brexit negotiations, I have changed my mind and would vote no. Reasons 1. If you think brexit negotiations are tough, wait til you see any future leaving negotiations with rest of the Union, it would cost scotland dear, all for a great big SNP ego trip. 2. We have a growing number of family ties in England. 3 This is 2019 not 1314 or 1745. 4. EU (germany / France) will not throw money at us to join them. They'll have they're own financial issues, trying to keep the rest together. Then there's the current EU immigration policy (I've no problem with those people already here to work and contribute), potential EU army involving us in disputes we want no part of etc etc. On balance head rules the heart and I am persuaded to say stay in UK, until someone comes up with a bullet proof (economic) arguement to the contrary.

Gruegy And thanks to the UK Single Market, we cant tax those goods to the UK; we lose our £4bn quarterly trade balance surplus and take on a share of the UK’s deficit of £12bn per capita resulting in a net loss of £64bn in taxable income, economic growth and investment credit every single year - just by remaining within the UK. It genuinely would be far better to trade with the UK without being a member of the UK because it’s a deal that is entirely detrimental to us.
@Gruegy
@Gruegy 5 лет назад
@@sicgc7658 If my understanding is correct, you are saying that by leaving the UK you can tax your goods to England, Wales and NI? Does this imply to the EU also which you wish to be a member state of? I thought that the EU was all about free movement of goods on a tariff free basis.
@sicgc7658
@sicgc7658 5 лет назад
Gruegy There are no fixed tariffs within the UK nor EU single market, nor are there duty tariffs. This isn’t what is being discussed here. Profits and income made off of exports are a part of taxable income, the same profits from balance of trade. These can fall under several different forms depending on whether it’s corporate, private, personal, individual etc. This is the tax I’m talking about. It’s currently an unrequited market in the UK. Goods leaving or entering England, even if indirectly from the other 3 nations (inc. crown dependencies), is taxed as an English good, when leaving an English port or cross-border. However, imports from the rUK are do not fall under taxable income, meaning the other nations lose out on tax profit. This allows England to generate income whilst trying to centralise markets into a trade centre (in this case London) and deter companies from expanding into Scotland, Wales nor Northern Ireland, and encourages tax evasion in the dependencies. This is actually a bad thing for many of working class in England as they lose the benefit of close trade and it can harm small and medium sized company profits across different nations in the UK - however, it’s entirely detrimental and costs billions for us in Scotland, not just the working class. The UK is fundamentally broken, including many poorer individuals south of the border, however I welcome anyone in England, Wales or NI who wishes to remain in the EU or in general live here. Going independent won’t make us enemies, we’ll remain neighbours and best friends - and that’s a good thing!

The whole argument for Scottish Independence is just rubbish. Back in 2014 the Yes campaign said that the North sea oil would be one of the biggest sources of income. However the price of oil has since collapsed, the price to gather oil in the UK has skyrocketed and there is hardly any left. Which clearly shows their severe lack of foresight. So if Nicola Sturgeon wants to divide an already divided nation once again then I think she it's only fair that she faces some severe consequences. I've always considered the SNP to be the political equivalent of a spoilt child. This is to a certain extent of course because you're a member of the UK, however to suggest that you're a fully independent country when inside the EU is simply moronic.

Andy F Yet your bold claims are easily proven wrong. Scotland currently loses billions in taxes each year to the UK [Ref 4]. Scotland contributes £10,700 in taxes each year to the UK per capita, compared to the UK average of £9,000; this means Scotland contributes £1,900 more per capita. The Barnett Formula sees Scotland get back £1,500 [ref 10] more than the UK expenditure average out with deficit of £9,000. This means Scotland loses £400 per capita to the UK each year, or the equivalent of almost £2.2bn in taxes. This means Scotland, each year, loses billions of pounds in taxes each year that it would otherwise have to spend if it were independent. Trident costs Scotland the equivalent of £180m every single year; depriving Scotland of hundreds of new police officers, nurses, GPs and over a thousand new teachers - something in which Scotland is in dire need of [Ref 17]. Scotland is the only country in the UK, apart from Northern Ireland, to be self sufficient in terms of trade; in fact its the only UK Crown Region, again part from Northern Ireland, to have a positive balance of trade. This means that Scotland exports more goods than it imports, even more than that of London, a region and city in which its economy is based on indirect trading [Ref 1]. Scotland’s largest export partner was the Netherlands and Norway for Imports (NI’s statistics were so high because both imports and exports were dominated by the Republic). Scotland’s balance of trade is +2.81 compared to the UK’s -6.48 or the rUK’s -7.35; this leaves Scotland’s GDPpc as £31,044 and the UK’s £26,806 [Ref 1]. Oil is not considered a Scottish Export but as a UK export, with the profit split amongst each country per population, meaning Scotland sees less than 10% of its total revenue accounted for trade. As shown, [Ref 13], Scotland’s trade is vast, but [Ref 14] we see that Scotland trades roughly £52.4bn IF including oil and gas that is produced by Scotland as a solely Scottish export and income, compared to UK trade as £48.9bn. Meaning Scotland trades with the rest of the world more than the UK, significantly with oil trade amongst Europe which produces the largest profit margin for taxation purposes, of which Scotland doesn’t see being a member of the UK Single Market. Not only does the EU want us to rejoin, but even Spain has withdrawn its opposition [Ref 6,7]. Not to mention the potential to join the Nordic Council [Ref 8], but even still, Scotland’s annuals membership fee will only come to a net contribution of between £0.3bn to £1.5bn, as it does vary each year. This is an estimate [Ref 9] as Finland and Scotland share identical stats that are used to calculate membership fees, so the Finnish fees will be identical to Scottish fees; the geographical subsidies to Finland are compensated by the Scottish fishing and oil subsidies. This means that the EU costs less than the UK with far more benefit, far more control and more sovereignty with the ability to retain more autonomy and have equal say. Something that the UK denies Scotland. EU officials from Spain (Scotland’s biggest proponent to independence in 2014) now support a legally independent Scotland rejoining the EU [Ref 11]. Specific members of EU countries such as from Ireland [Ref 16], Germany [Ref 12] and Iceland [Ref 15]. Andy F Shock horror, I take longer than 3 hours to reply because I not only have a life, unlike yourself who sits and trolls with erroneous, uninformed or straight up anti-capacious statements. And unlike you, I provide sources that disprove your adamant bullshit claims. Spain see us as setting an example to the Catalans and the Basques by holding a legal referendum, which benefits them in their arguments against Catalonia and Basque - and have just elected a coalition government between a VERY Pro-EU party and a party {Podemos} that supports the right to self determination. The SNP raised income tax on those earning above £33,000 - indirectly through equivalence; EVERY single Scot earning less than that pays LESS tax than in the rest of the UK. This tax power is also extremely limited in its capabilities, hence why mitigation is done via Holyrood cuts to compensate for expenditure loss by bond allocation from the Chancellor, in which we have NO control nor say over. I’m happy to pay more tax, given I earn above the threshold, because it gives back to a system that allowed me to get to where I am, providing opportunity for your 5th child to go to University, have access to healthcare, a decent infrastructure and legal system and get a decent education which you seem to have been deprived of unfortunately. Yoons like you wrap yourself in a Union Jack of denial, stick your fingers in your ears and ignore everything in front of you. No the UK is not 'one country' it is since the late 1990s a semi federal nation. With a series of unique constitutional settlements with each constituent region. Scotland has its own Parliament and Wales and NI have Assemblies. each has the ability to make decisions on issues such as health, education, social welfare, agriculture and transportation that the UK government (seated in Westminster) has no control over outside of imposing budgetary constraints. Take my home, NI, for example if you lived in 'one country' the law would be same in each region BUT in NI we have special laws - the only armed police force in the UK, no same sex marriage, different public holidays, the special powers act means that serious criminal trials without a jury are the norm not the exception, serious curtailment of freedoms to speech and assembly that most in England would consider anti democratic and our government is a mandatory coalition (when it could be arsed to sit) to name but a few. So if the Laws in England are not the same as in NI then how can we live in 'one country'?

Clearly in both cases things might not be as favourable as they were previously but to suggest there would be no trade at all would be akin to listening to the kind of an argument you'd expect from an ill informed child. I also wonder why those who have seen what has happened since 2014, the broken promises, the total disdain and contempt for Scotland and it's people, the poverty, the appearance of food-banks why are they so frightened of going it alone?
