Recently went digging through some of my Dad's old VHS tapes of football bits-and-bobs. Found this lovely little six-minute tribute to Cloughy, broadcast on the occasion of his retirement from football, 1993.
there just isn't enough Clough on film .... everything that is is fantastic. A genius in every sense! But just look at his achievements ..... staggering! Go on Brian Clough

@@Kill--alllll---IDF he was amazing, wasn't he, to win 2 European cups with an unfancied provincial club is as hard as it gets, and he must of been some player to have scored 251 league goals in 274 games. That's Messi/CR7 type rate and career cut short, he was too big for the dead wood at the f.a.

What if he had been appointed England manager and did as well as he did at Leeds? Clough’s talent was in building up small clubs, managers with that skill have never done well as England manager.
If he’d got the job, England would have won the World Cup. Always felt he should have got it in 1990 after robson, from the point of view I think it would have reignited him. He was a bit despondent towards the end at Nottingham forest. Feeling obviously he’d taken the club as far as he could. The England job would have been a great way to leave. He was 55 in 1990. Would have been nice for him to take England to Sweden and the USA .
Clough would have needed Peter Taylor to keep him fairly grounded, if he became England manager. Or he would have upset too many people. However, top 5 British manager in last 60 years
I could listen to Brian Clough for days on end. We were so lucky to be blessed with this extraordinary man. People like him make football great, he was big headed but in a good way. He never looked down on people for class reasons because he considered himself from the lower classes himself. This just makes ordinary people like him more, one of the legends of Sport. You can debate as to who was the best manager, but you cannot debate on who was the most entertaining, only one candidate.
Always tickles me when supporters who comment in favour of the opposite team feel the need to introduce themselves as the team they support 'United fan here' So fkin what. Just comment...
Born and bred M.U F.C Cloughie can't fault him. I would never swap Fergie for him but gee he really was an absolute football genius. You can't love football and not love Cloughie. R.I.P.
@@slaydarth9701 Not really irrelevant. Few clubs or managers get to that level. They get spoken of in the same breath. Probably not relevant asking why .
RIP Brian, you're sorely missed, football these days needs someone like you. I would loved to have heard his thoughts on the fact that 69% of players in the Premier League aren't English or even British, also that you can finish 4th in the Premier League and still qualify to play in the 'Champions' League. When you see what he achieved at Nottingham Forest you can have nothing but respect for him.
+WelshHDGamer - Fifa 15, Minecraft & Gaming Content! add jock stein don revie, and youve the only brirsh managers that have built a legacy team with british players that conquered their league for years and europe
As probably one of the few Leeds fans to say this I think Brian Clough was an extremely talented manager, he was Charismatic, flamboyant and extremely witty which is what was so inspirational about him as a personality of the footballing world. He said what others thought. He lived by the sword and carried it well for a very long time and won trophies everywhere he went. I wish he could have stabilized Leeds when he was there but it wasn't the right time for him just after Don Revie's era had just finished. A year or two later and maybe it would have been a better time to be there. Going through history he was probably one of the best man managers of the game and he is sadly missed by this Leeds fan.
Three things I've heard Clough say watching him on RU-vid: 1. The greatest days of my managerial career were at Derby (said in 1991). 2. If it wasn't for cheating and bribery, Derby would have won the European Cup. 3. I resigned from Derby County, but looking back the chairman should have resigned -- not me. I know his best successes came during his longest tenure at Forest, but hearing those things (as a Derby fan) always makes me think "what if..."
As a forest fan, I really can’t lie, you were robbed of a lot of glory to your local rivals. I’d feel sorry for you if you lot didn’t keep getting salty over the situation.
@@zachbladen I wouldn't say robbed. Our poor directorship led to Clough's departure so we can only blame ourselves. The saltiness is fading to be honest -- Derby have been the marginally better team for the past 20 years, but neither have done a great deal in that time. I just like spreading facts about Clough's time at Derby as they often come at great surprise to people. See you in the Championship next year ;)
A truly brilliant man . One of my hero’s . Says how it is and he knows he’s right. What a brilliant statement when he said that if bill shankley wanted a player to play for liverpool and he said I’ll have to talk to my agent, shankley would have hit him . And cloughie said I would have held him down so he could have hit him .
Mr Clough! You are the greatest! NFFC FOREVER! HE speaks about Shankley with respect! Even though NFFC and Liverpool hate each other there is still respect!
An intelligent perceptive manager, no nonsense. Most articulate when interviewers asked silly questions, he put them right on the spot! Clough was unique.
A lot of talk on here about a knighthood, but I like to think Cloughie would have been proud enough to turn it down. Great little tribute to a true legend.
Brilliant man, today we can look back at how much a genius he really was. Listen to Mark Crossley and the respect he still has and shows for The Gaffer.
I have his autograph and I can remember to this day how it felt to get the great man’s name on a photo, I think I told everyone in school even those that didn’t want to listen 👍👍
Growing up in West Cork, Ireland, I was a United fan since I was 6 years old, from the moment I saw George Best take the ball around the Benfica goalkeeper to score in the 1968 European Cup final. However, me and all my friends (who supported Liverpool, Spurs, West Ham, Arsenal, etc.) supported Forest as well in the late 70s because of Cloughie and the attacking football they played, and I've had a soft spot for them ever since. Those two stars on the crest say more than all the money in the world. My friend grew up in Lowdham, outside Nottingham, and when I visited her parents some years ago they told me they used to be friends of the Cloughs and also Jimmy Sirrel's family (Notts County). It was lovely listening to their stories and felt very much like coming home. What a managerial partnership he and Peter Taylor had, and what a character he was. I love watching these clips about him.
Lovely vid, I love the guy, I love watching good football teams play good football, the good players at their best, & the top managers manage till they can't manage no more. Thats what I love about football, not just winning, but the beauty of it. Also thanks to the leeds fans below who accept he was a great manager, despite the fact he made it clear how he felt about Leeds Utd. (y)
This great man’a achievement managing a club like Forest to two European cups will never be bettered the fact he was never offered the England job one of football’s greatest travesties.
R.I.P Brian you were and still are the greatest manager to ever live, and I am proud you managed my club and won the things you did with us, we still sings songs about you at every home game in the Trent End, and will do forever you are the best
I dont want to get into a debate over who was the best, Brian Clough was Brian Clough, and I, as a Liverpool fan respect him and treasure his memory til the day I die. A great man, an honest man, and an inspiration to anyone looking to make a career in the mess that is now football. God bless him.
Winning the European Cup was just as hard in the 70s as it is today. If Malmö was so shitty, how come they made it to the final instead of Real Madrid, Juventus or Liverpool, who were all in the cup that year? Less rounds = meeting the big clubs sooner, unlike today, where all teams play a billion matches to maximise TV revenue. What Clough did was absolutely beyond anything ever achieved by any other English manager. Ferguson can only dream of skills like his.
@@chriskolovos6143 i agree about brian clough, but i wish both of you would think before you open your mouths about alex ferguson, have you both forgotten what fergie achieved with aberdeen before he even joined united, was that not an amazing achievement.
@@markscanlan5147 Alex Ferguson built that Aberdeen team And beating Real Madrid in the Cup Winners Cup final was a big result. Another England manager who won lots of trophies was Bob Paisley
@@chriskolovos6143 I agree with you Alex ferguson was great manager won loads of trophies for both aberdeen and man united and Bob paisley as well won loads of trophies as well these men you have mentioned they were great managers what brian clough did with derby county and nottingham forest was brilliant taking both teams out of the second division and taking them to first division title and winning back to back european cups with forest 2 small clubs is quite remarkable I wouldn't like to compare ferguson paisley or clough with each all 3 of them were genius great managers they didn't have the money these managers have today
although he's nearly been dead for ten years, football misses brian cloug. he was a man of the people. he said what he thought. he rose about the sheep mentality and said HOW IT IS. we need more like him. not sheep who are scared to say what they think. portobello road.
The Labour Party misses people like Brian Clough (and Bill Shankly) even more than football does. What the hell happened to their clear and concise conception of socialism?
Met Brian 3 times, twice because I was St John Ambulance support and he shook everyone of us by the hand, then a third time after our cricket match on the outskirts of Nottingham City finished early. We persuaded the landlord & his huge alsatian dog that we were friendly & he let us in, a little later the double doors flew open & in came a racing bike followed by Cloughie, green jumper, white tennis shorts & flat cap. He chatted with us about cricket and how poor a side we were while he downed a tall 'lemonade'. Lovely man if you got on the right side of him.
Cloughy would be proud to see how forest was for the 2022 2023 season..amazing team spirit and skills. They Did the city proud again, they once said there was a Clough curse on us..they can't anymore.Theyl have a good year next year cloughy am sure of it
The Shanks quote is the best. 'I'd hold him while Shanks hit him' Different times. Greatest Achievievee in English football. 2 underperforming, especially Forest, mid range clubs to Title Winners and Debry SF European Cup and Forest 2 time winners. And playing with No Little Style. RIP Brian.
I dont support any of the teams directly or indirectly linked to clough, but i will say hands down no questions he was THE GREATEST english football manager ever
He said what he meant and he meant what he said…… there’s not many in life that do that let alone in Football…..! The best English manager ever….! Should have been given the England job….. I genuinely think we would have won either the Euros or the World Cup…. Especially with the players we had at the time…. But he scared the directors of the FA because he was the man he was….. a better man than any of those directors then or now….. RIP Mr Clough…. Thank you for making the game I love.. Great..!
Got a great photo of Brian and me dad together in the school team . They were mates went to the same youth club in grove hill in Middlesbrough together.
I'm a stoke city fan have been for 50 years I'm know I'm biased with my club but the best manager I will ever know is cloughie what a fantastic character of my generation he took no shite an old fashioned manager he said what he said if yer didn't like it then you know what you can do so proud of times when men were men it was told how it was RIP cloughie you would not want to be around now ballet dancers in this new world thats my personal opinion and I'm staying with it let's go back 50 years and start again
Brian and Peter. Are without doubt the greatest ever to manage in British football. No other club with Forests stature have ever or will ever win the European cup
Your right Peter Taylor does deserve a lot of credit Brian Clough and Peter Taylor one of the greatest double acts of all time same as bill shankly and Bob Paisley at Liverpool I liked Brian Clough because he spoke his mind and if it upset anybody he didn't care he said how it was Peter Taylor was at his job as well they were like brothers they both needed each other same as at the time bill shankly and Bob Paisley
As an Irish man , England would have won a world cup with him as manager, but I those in charge of the FA were afraid he might show them up. Brilliant man, told you straight, no back doors.
