Its actually amazing hearing Cough essentially setting out the arguments that would eventually lead to the Premier League, as in so many things he was ahead of his time. I remember that ITV deal being seen as the end of football, arguments about its on too much etc, people won't come any to the grounds any more even then, But Cough was right, football needed to adjust itself to the world it was in, the ITV deal was a step towards that and the Sky deal took it to the next level. Even as someone who is unhappy about many of the changes wrought by the coming of the Premier league, the game needed to move forward, and Clough understood this

I hope Greavsie has recovered a bit by now. His record as top scorer in the top 4 European leagues was only recently beaten by Ronaldo - who took a year longer. Plus Jimmy played for mid table clubs, not European titans. Clough is the best English goals per game record holder 259 in 271. His lament was that he'd score 4 but the defence would concede 5. Another age.

The greatest England manager we never had said what he meant
@derekharrison1582

As a Nottingham Forest supporter, I’m glad he never got the England job in 1977, because if he and Peter Taylor had gone,Forest might well have missed out on the success of winning the league title and league cup in 1978, retaining the league cup and Winning the European cup in 1979 and retaining the European cup in 1980.A new manager may well have ripped that team apart and brought his own players in.Having said that,I still think Cloughie should have got the England job in 1982,after the World Cup in Spain.Cloughie was such a dynamic manager who wouldn’t have taken any nonsense and would have put plenty of noses out of joint,especially with the FA.And that’s why he didn’t get the job.Because the FA would have been shitting themselves at Cloughie’s bombastic manner.He would have upset plenty of people.When you think of the players we had available after 1982.The likes of Glenn Hoddle,Bryan Robson,Kevin Keegan( who Bobby Robson discarded too early),Terry Butcher,Viv Anderson,Peter Shilton,Steve Coppell,Trevor Francis,Tony Woodcock,etc,etc,we were awash with talent.I do think,no I believe with Cloughie at the helm,we could have got to a final under his management.

What Clough achieved in those first five years at Nottingham Forest will probably never be repeated. This is hindsight but based on Derby and Nottingham Forest I think Clough was a troubleshooter.
