Someone asked how my Logic computer interfaces with my ProTools computer. Well, here it is!! I show you exactly how the audio from Logic using the MOTU 2408 Mk. III goes to the ProTools 192 interface via lightpipe. Also, how they are 'synced' up using SMPTE Time Code with the Digidesign SYNC I/O to the Unitor 8 MIDI interface. I also explain my digital clock source for the whole studio, the Apogee Big Ben.

I love how Logic works in terms of sequencing. Its so easy and there are so many great plug-ins that work well with it. On the flip side, I love how easy ProTools is in terms of recording and editing audio...plus automation during the mixing is easier in ProTools. Also, all of the processing power of ProTools HD4 (which is what I'm running) is huge with all of the TDM plug-ins. So the best of both worlds means Logic is the best MIDI sequencer and ProTools is the best for recording and mixing.

Yes this V-Blog is hi-tech, but I find it refreshing and informative. It's great to see the "practical" side of creating. For me, it enhances the finished product. Way to go Brian!!!!

Sir, You are a genius! I wish I had half the brainpower you have for audio engineering and production! Your setup is nuts and one day I WILL have a setup much like this. lol. I am determined. Got alot more learning to do. Wish me luck!

BRIAN!!!!!! I did not know you had a RU-vid channel. You are in my top all time favorites with Herbie Glasper and Lorber . Another Long night out is the only CD in my reference system that entire album was produced exactly how I need my music to sound.

Yes, correct! Once MIDI parts are recorded into ProTools, they are 'committed' and rock solid. They can then be manipulated more within ProTools.

Yes, if its all on one computer, you shouldn't need anything that I have in terms of sending audio out external interfaces and into ProTools or external SMPTE syncing. It should all route internally within the computer - audio & sync. I haven't done it on only one computer so I'm not exactly sure how that is achieved. Good luck!
@BrianCulbertsonMusic
@BrianCulbertsonMusic 14 лет назад
All outs from Logic digitally route thru ProTools, even 1&2. So, to hear Logic, I also have to have an aux input in ProTools up with MOTU 1&2 as its input.

24-bit is much better than 16-bit...I recommend it. I'm tracking this record at 48kHz. I did Its On Tonight at 96kHz but it definitely was harder to mix because it halfs the track count and plug-in power. 24-bit does not half the track count or plugs, it just takes up more memory as the audio files are larger.

@kk6downing I don't think it has anything to do with less latency. That would be a software setting in most cases.

The Big Ben makes sure all digital pieces of gear are talking the same language and that you don't have digital pops in the recordings. Everything has to get digital sync from somewhere and if everything isn't getting the same sync, you'll have problems. The Big Ben is just one of the best in terms of its lack of 'gitter'.....you'll have to look that one up. You can use ProTools SYNC I/O as the master if you want. But, you can't have each thing using its own 'internal' sync. Make sense?
@BrianCulbertsonMusic

@ktsudios I do it because I prefer to sequence in Logic and then record live instruments and mix in ProTools. For me to get all of my midi tracks from Login to ProTools, I have to do it this way so they transfer digitally. It works great!!

@ensoniqz Nope. No noise. Believe it or not, this works the best for my situation. It seems old school, but it totally works even better than midi time code.

Great video demonstration but why not use one comp with Logic and PT, use the 192 interface for Logic because you are running audio through it already, next export logic sessions as a omf file into PT?

I read the description box and died laughing about how I got lost halfway through the first sentence. I think if I repeated that at school, all my friends would think I'm some sort of computer genius haha. Great video anyway--I'll hang onto your teachings in case a stranger one day asks me how to interface a Logic computer with a ProTools computer :)

Hi Brian, Thank You for the video!. what piece of gear would you recommend If I want to synchronize My Cubase project running from a PC to a Protools session running from a Mac. I want to make Cubase the master and Pro Tools the slave. Essentially, I want to press play, stop, rewind, scrub left, right and have pro tools follow. The goal is to have Cubase (master) as my sequencer and pro tools (slave) to run video simultaneously.. Thank you in advance!.

Before I upgraded to Apogee, I had my 2408 MkIII modded by Black Lion... Amazing how different it sounded. Of course that's for the analog and not digital in's
@jackeatley
@jackeatley 12 лет назад
@aidanbw You require both the interface and its PCIe / PCIX card, the motu PCI 424. then you connect the 2408 to the card and volia :)

That's a nice studio I want to ask you a question can I use moving blankets to put on my wall to absorb sound because I have a very small room and I have two windows in it so the traffic on my block is not that bad but I want to control the sound that's in the room other than the sound that's outside the room

ProTools outputs 1&2 go to the speakers at all times. Logic never goes direct to the speakers.

i have PT Le and Logic 9 running on the same computer, can this be achieved without the use of external syncing out gear?

BC, Do you run the analog 1-2 out of the motu 2408 to your logic speakers? Then I guess the digital 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 etc out to the 192? Are they all on the same bank. Is 8 channels really 4 at 24bit? What is the digital time piece for, can you explain more about that. I understand the midi sync time clock but why do you need a digital clock big ben? What do you record at 24bit? and what resoulution? Can you tell the difference between 16bit and 24bit and the different resolutions?

Why interface a system through a system and then track it when you could simply bounce your session down to wav files and just upload the wave files in Pro Tools
@XanderMaas
@XanderMaas 13 лет назад
Cool video video, but i was thinking. Why won't you just bounce all tracks in Logic and import them back in Pro Tools. Saves money because you don't need two extra interfaces and one mac pro and it saves time. The way you're doing it seems quite circuitous. But that's just my humble opinion.

How are you still using Emagic's Unitor 8 and AMT 8? There aren't supported by OS X? Just wondering, cause I use Clock Works with my MTP AV USB. Emagic is no longer in business.
