Yes, Ponting had a great team, but he was the biggest performing asset in the team and his best came when his country needed him the most, unlike Tendulkar who played a few years too many, making selfish records. Ponting, although having debuted 7 years later than both Tendulkar and Lara, has done enough to be mentioned in the same breath as the two. No one in the world has scored more runs than Ricky Ponting during the period 1996-2012 (debut until retirement). Ponting from 2002-2007 was just untouchable, Bradmanesque.

From the Mid 1990's to the year he retired, one will hardly find a test match that WI drew or won without a significant contribution from this man. So telling was his input and how weak a team WI was for most of those years, Lara remains today in the HISTORY of TEST CRICKET to be the ONLY batsman to have ever scored a double century and a century in the SAME MATCH and still end up on the losing side. This happened on the tour to SL in 2001 I believe. Scored 688 runs in 3 test matches and WI still end up losing 3-0. The Aussies so feared this man that they cheated his wicket over the many times the two teams played that I lost count along the way.
