Brian was a remarkable servant to Kent, and a really nice, humble man. I had the good fortune to meet him when he was running the indoor school at Canterbury, and myself and a few mates used to book it for nets while at the university. Brian would play back videos of our net sessions after serving us with our lunch, and give us some great tips on our batting. How many ex pros of his stature would have done that? We were only basic club standard but he was never patronising and only wanted to help. I will always have huge respect for him as a player, as a loyal servant to his county (who probably would have cleaned the toilets at St Lawrence if he thought it needed doing) and as a man. There aren't too many around like him.

I worked under Brian at the Ames-Levett sports centre for a few years. He gave me my first 'proper' job after a short spell as an apprentice there. Top man.

Although I'm a Sussex supporter, living in Hastings made it easy for me to cross over the border and watch some Kent games. I remember getting Brian Luckhurst's autograph in the mid-1970s; he seemed such a nice guy, a real gentleman. What a fine player Brian was, too, for both Kent and England. He played such a major part in us winning back the Ashes on the 1970/ 1971 tour to Australia.

Enjoyed watching cricket in the early 70s as a schoolboy. The game has lost a bit of its allure over the decades. But this made me fall in love with the game again

Great man. I asked him if he’d be president of our cricket club, Cozenton. He agreed and never ever missed the annual dinner/ dance and awards night. Truly great man and sadly missed 😢

Great video, good to see faces like Deadly, Denness & Cowdrey. Thanks for the upload :-)

I saw Deadly at a charity game last summer, another lovely man who was only too happy to turn out and lend support when asked. This generation of Kent players were not only talented, but also great ambassadors for the game. Those still with us continue to be so.

I was a very happy Kent member in those days. What a side?! As well as Denness and Luckhurst there was Cowdrey, Knott and Underwood - and that was just the England players. I will always remember John Shepherd who had a throw like a howitzer. And then there was the great Asif Iqbal - he may have come from Pakistan but he was Kentish through and through.

Yes unfortunately, most of the test highlights of him on RU-vid seem to involve Lillee and Thomson giving him a working over. Obviously they don't give a true reflection of his ability.

He played before my time but I believe he used to live near us in Buckhurst Hill or Woodford as we used to get a few wrong number phone calls for him, reckon there might have been only a digit difference in our home phone numbers.

So Statto 74: Maybe you could have asked the errant callers what number they were looking for.

What a player. He probably caught Dennis Lillee at his fastest - and smashed him around quite a bit. Out of interest, where did you get the England India 1971 Old Trafford footage from?

Euclid Algorithm Hi, I'm not sure where the footage came from I'm afraid, I think that Dad had a contact at the BBC who gave him the tape with it on.
