So far, this is by far the best Brian Wilson interview I have ever heard. I was in the 5th grade in 1963 and that is when Beetle-mania began in Oklahoma City. I cannot remember listening to the Beach Boys on the radio. I pretty much missed the entire original Beach Boys, but over the past year I have discovered them and their life’s story on youtube and Prime Music. I no longer have any interest in the Beetles and my money, as a 72 year old, is being spent on Beach Boys music.
It's sad that Brian's so dismissive of Carl (21:20). Carl kept the group going for 11+ years from 1965 to 1976 when Brian refused to tour with them, and then from 1976 to Carl's death in 1998 when Brian toured with them sporadically. Carl was the band's musical director and the glue that held it all together, and Brian didn't seem to recognize that in this interview. Brian and Carl had a very complicated relationship. Eugene Landy recognized that and capitalized on it, driving the wedge more deeply into their personal and professional relationship.
