There exists an archetype of athlete which has been of particular interest to me for quite some time. It's the type of player who is definitely above average, but not quite elite. They are "Dudes".
In this inaugural episode of Baseball Dudes, I'll be covering one such player. He is known as "The Craziest Man in Baseball" and "The Beard," his raw power on the field was matched only by his antics off it, and at the time of his peak, he took not just baseball, but the sports world by storm.
I'm talking, of course, about San Francisco Giants closer and all-around maniac, Brian Wilson.

Maybe he'd be respected more if he didn't diss the Beach Boys or their hit song "Shut Down" (his name's Brian Wilson - same name as the Beach Boys iconic lead singer.) That's why his naysayers refer to him as Beach Boy.

He gave my sister a ride home when she mistook him leaving the stadium after a game as a taxi cab (he drove a decommissioned cop car). She didn’t follow baseball much but was living in SF for work and was gifted some tickets. After the game he was sitting in traffic with his windows down so she walked up to get a ride. He was a little taken aback not being recognized, but they were headed the same direction so he told them to hop in. What a dude.

In surveys when women are shown 29 photos of clean shaven men and 1 photo of a bearded man, they overwhelmingly find the bearded man to be more attractive. Then again, when shown 29 pictures of bearded men, they find the one clean shaven man more attractive. I know that's a little intellectually confounding, but then again so was the Giants pitching.

Funny story about his second TJ. I played baseball under a head coach who knew Wilson and other giants members. He told us that Wilson’s ucl was only partially torn. During this time the giants had informed Wilson that the team doctor would not operate on him because it was possible to just rehab himself back. Any pitcher can tell you it’s a better option to get the surgery instead of avoiding it, so wilson took the heaviest plyo ball he had and threw it against the wall over and over until he had fully torn his ucl. If this doesn’t scream absolute psycho than I don’t know what does.

Born into a SF Giants loving family; but the Giants always seemed to fill the "lovable losers" role, always choking in the big games. Until that fateful 2010 NLCS vs. the Phillies, that is. Wilson's series-ending called third strike to Ryan Howard might be my favorite MLB pitch ever thrown. The Giants were no longer the lovable losers, but a mini-dynasty!

The 'Dude' concept reminds me a lot of Old School Wrestling Review's 'boy stable'. The idea is that in pro wrestling, there are certain guys who aren't main eventers who you have a great fondness for, often ineffably, and who you love despite their flaws. The only concrete criteria is that they cannot have ever won the world title in a major promotion. For example, Fit Finlay and Val Venis are common choices for one's boy stable. Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin are too popular and 'over' to be boys. If I had a baseball boy stable, it would look like this: Mike Greenwell, Oil Can Boyd, Luis Tiant, Chad Bentz, and Spike Owen.
