Cycling the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal trail in the South West of England. What I like about the trails in Somerset is the open flat lands and fields that on a summers day the sky seems to stretch on forever and the sunsets last for an age.
This trail is relatively short of just over 14 miles each way and I seem to reach Taunton in no time. The trail is mostly flat with the only climbs are the few feet where the path leads up and over the side of canal bridges where you don't cycle under them.
There are lots of machine gun pillboxes still remaining from World War II where the canal was used as The Taunton Stop Line. There is also the bridge at the Cogload Railway Flying Junction allowing two railways to cross. If this bridge doesn't have a name, it should do.
At Taunton there is Castle Bow and the Museum of Somerset, beautiful buildings dating back to the 13th century which was the real highlight of Taunton and where I sat in on the green eating my lunch.
