How to plant perennial Phlox in short. Perennial Phlox is beautiful in any landscape designs and gardens. They are very easy to grow. They come back every year and give us striking blooms. Following these simple tips on how to plant Phlox and care for them you will be able to successfully grow them in your garden.
Deer and bunnies love to eat phlox and can eat them down to the ground. So a repellent needs to be used. This one worked well for me: www.homedepot....

Hello! Thank you for this informative video. I just planted a tall phlox and it's giving its first bloom. I look forward to it blooming through Fall! I do have a question--what do I need to do to it in the winter? Do I just cut it back and if so, how much do I cut back?

When it finishes blooming it would help to cut the steam with the spent blooms to about 10 inches from the ground. This will encourage new growth with new blooms. In the fall all you need to do is to cut it down to 2-3 inches from the ground when the leaves turn brown. In my zone 7b that usually happens around November.

Can I sow the seeds in the fall for early flowering in spring? I planted some of the seeds for this today. I don't know if it is frost resistant or not for it to survive the winter.

The phlox that you grow from seed wouldn't survive the winter, at least not here in zone 7b. But you can start those seeds inside 4-5 weeks before your last frost and plant them out after the danger of frost has passed. Hope this helps and good luck!

Why would my phlox leaves turn a deep red? It was green when I planted it but now they are all turning red. It’s started blooming now too so it is at least somewhat happy I suppose but I thought the plant was supposed to be green?

Leaves turning red could be a sign of phosphorus deficiency in the soil but it can also be caused by by cooler weather and/or too much water/rain. Just keep an eye on it. Lack of phosphorus shouldn't kill it, but too much water can cause the roots to rot and at that point it can die. It's good that it's blooming now. You could try to feed the plant with half a doze of fertilizer that has a higher phosphorus number in it. Good luck!

I wouldn't know but if you go to your local garden center or nursery they would tell you for sure.

What variety do you recommend for southern Florida?
@GardenLifeChannel
@GardenLifeChannel 3 года назад
Try "John Fanick" it's a phlox paniculata variety. In hotter climates a bit of shade in the late afternoon is very helpful to them. Also check at your local garden centers and ask them. They are usually knowledgeable about what grows best in your zone. Good luck!

how long does it take phlox to get that tall
@GardenLifeChannel
@GardenLifeChannel 3 года назад
I would say about 2 years if you start with a small plant. Phlox is a vigorous grower. Also the hight depends on the variety. Some grow tall and some just always stay short.

Yeah I'm new to learning about Phlox. Everything I am reading is saying it is a low groundcover, like under 12" At the end of the video these look 3 feet tall.

Phlox loves morning sun and afternoon shade or filtered shade. It can take full sun 🌞 just need to water it more often if it dries out.
