Greetings, I keep pulling the motor and I'm over it.....the new oem governor ends up in the oil pan, instantly upon start up. I install the pan and governor like you, engine end bottom up so the governor doesn't fall out, I set the inner oil pan lever to the low setting (counter clock wise) and allow the pan to settle on it's own. On all the occasions, it seems like the inner rod arm is hitting the tip of the governor by using a 1/4 socket going right to left, on the exterior arm, aka seems fine. But, falls out, ideas?
Important Note: Video is great thanks. However I would add that when the governor assembly shatters often the pieces flying around can shatter the compression release assembly behind the crankcase so be sure to check that. I fixed the governor assembly with the help of this video but didn't understand the compression release mechanism. I put it all together then discovered the engine would not crank over unless I manually rotated the engine past the compression stroke. The. Compression Relief assembly at low RPM adds to the height of the cam on the compression stroke just enough so the compression is low enough to allow the engine to turn easier at startup. Once the engine starts the rpm is increased greatly allowing the assembly to spin out of the way thys restoring full compression. It turns out that one of these assemblies failed and the broken pieces took out the other. It would have saved a lot of time, work and cash had I checked them both while the case was open. Thanks again!
Great video! I pulled my 20hp Briggs apart and my governor had blown apart. I purchased the replacement parts per the video and put everything back together. Now she won't start. She turns over but that's it. Fuel is getting to the engine and I put new plugs in.
Perfect video for me. The governor on my 407777-0124-E1 engine broke inside and the engine went full rpm. Your video was perfect in showing how to put the parts back in correctly. I ordered the governor, so I can't wait to install it. Thank you so much for your video. It was very informative. Thumbs up.
About the governor adjustment, the manual tells you to loosen the 7/16th nut, hold the throttle lever down so that the throttle is wide open and then rotate the governor stem that the 1/4" driver fits COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. Maybe I am missing something here, but it looks like you are rotating both your governor arm and the stem clock-wise. BTW, I always enjoy and benefit from your videos. Thank you!
Nathan Hilbig I turned mine to the right which is clockwise. My engine is running great at the correct rpm 3450 RPM. It would not be the first time manuals were incorrect.
doublewide6 Just wanted to follow up on this. I decided to follow the manual and sure enough blew up the governor. Put a new governor on and adjusted it following your vid and it worked like a charm. Thanks again for the great vids!
thanks DW6, I've got one of these mills sitting in the garage--going to attempt replacing an intek 17.5 on my wife's rider with the v-twin. Video is much appreciated!
perfect video...i was putting a new connecting rod in my 24hp and i went to pick up the governor gear and it fell apart....i thought it was broken til i found this video
Wow, dude you just helped me solve a big problem I was having with my boss,s tractor. Very well done and informative video. I wish your family well and hope everything is alright. Thank you.- JD
Thanks soooo much for this video of the governor adjustment....Changed the sump gasket and seal, thought the governor was set, but wasn't...Almost blew engine up...Thought I was going to need another arm to keep the rachet in place while tightening the 7/16" nut.....Put a rubber band on the rachet and it worked perfectly...Thanks again for this great and VERY helpful video !!!!
Hi, Had a bad misfire, replaced carburettor. Engine now revs very high. Took engine out replaced with a new governor, did not look damaged at all. Adjusted governor to carb as per instructions. Still revs high. Noticed the Governor arm does not seem to move througout the rev range. Any ideas? Thanks
This looks like what may solve my problem, but a little more info is needed, at least for me. How did you get the engine off the mower, and how was it disassembled? I have a White with this engine, but I cannot see how to get engine loose from frame without major disassembly.
Briggs and Stratton V twin Intek Hi, Had a bad misfire, replaced carburettor. Engine now revs very high. Took engine out replaced with a new governor, did not look damaged at all. Nice videos! I have a 20hp V twin with a loose governor shaft. This is the shaft that goes into the engine. The governor gear and governor spins on this shaft. How does this get repaired?
Do you have to set the top dead center on these motors? I was told there is no top dead center, you just line the dots up on the crank and cam, but a friend of mine swears up and down there a compression stroke and exhaust stroke, I think there isn't, that's what the cam lobes are for?
Does the governor arm (Crank) that goes into the crankcase have to be in certain position before you attach the crankcase back on or does it only fit on one way?
One thing I do when replacing sump gasket is I use electric ingraver and ingraver all the way around the case and cover, keeps gasket from moving with 242 on bolts
I got a 18.5 hp BS Intek V twin with governor problems that it just revs. So amount of time to replace the governor from start to put back into operation on the lawn tractor is there if you know? Also parts cost what would a person be needing for parts and cost. I have one that I not sure if I can handle and trying to figure out what I could or should do...Thanks.....
So I just did a rebuild on the exact same engine and set the govenor according to the manual. I have yet to run it, but I guess my question is, will I destroy something if the manual is wrong about this?
hey, question, I just pulled my governor off my intek, it didn't have the little clip under the governor button that holds the gear on, wondering if that is what you mean by "not all governor shafts have retaining clips"
If you want to increase the RPM you can change the governor spring . Or, increase the tension it's best if you have a tachometer to make sure you don't over rev the engine
I am replacing the governor in my Briggs. It is identical to yours. How hard is it to get the governor gear off the shaft? I am pulling as hard as I can on it, and it won't slide off. Do you have to pry it off, or should it slide off easy?
Thanks, great video! I think I have a trashed governor also on a BS 22HP twin, on a 2003-ish Craftsman GT5000. Is it possible to make this repair with the engine still on the tractor? And if I were to get a shop estimate instead of tackling it myself, what does your gut tell you a fair ballpark should be?
Scott Palmer no, you will have to take it out of the tractor. If you have basic tools, you can do it yourself with a service manual. Im not sure how much shop charge would be, I do all my own work. Briggs are very easy to change the gears, Kohler is much more labor intensive.
I have a bs els 725 26hp. I just replaced the sump gasket set everything right but the rev keep climbing. The only way I can get it to come down is either the choke or manually moving the Governor throttle linkage. Also in turtle shouldn't the throttle be all the way up at the set screw thanks
I think it’s money ahead to replace it if it’s 10 years old and mic cam Check for slack in compression release also and I change out cam on my own but ask customers if they won’t be safe and charge it
The local community blood shelter calls me, emails me, etc. I give blood every chance I can. I'm looking forward to it. It's no big deal, quick and painless.
mr Cool what is the key under the drive gear of the governor? Im doing a governor replacement on my briggs v twin 21hp and the governor shaft wont stay in its hole.
