I wanted to brighten up on the frunk on my Tesla Model 3. Adding this light strip gave me exactly what I wanted without having anything visible. Saw this mod done on Facebook but no instructions. Thought I'd make some so that it might be able to help others.

Or one can drill a tiny hole in the frunk tray. does need you to remove the entire tray though.(its super easy btw) That way the wires come out under the tray into the lockbox compartment. there is a foam piece there that EASY lets u slit a shallow slit that you push ur wire in to keep it firm. I im gonna drill mine tomorrow :) Just did not have time today..

I just spliced into them by cutting and soldering the old fashion way. An easy way would have been to get some wire taps and crimped on the existing wires. Hey, I‘ve bought such LEDs, but I was surprised about the amperes they needed. So I built in a left and a right one, each 60cm long. Together the curit has to spend 1,5A extra for the new light. Are you sure the fuse ist strong enough? For example, last week I built in a extra light in the trunk and had to learn that the left and the right LED are wired to 300mA Elektronik fuses. Up to now the new drunk light is still running, I‘m happy to find your video. By the way my TM3 is a Q3/2021 MiC. Greetings from the German Northsea Coast 😎

Caution Model S owners:::::: I ordered same strip via the link provided by Max (Nice video by the way). The amps used is more then the original light and it only remains illuminated for approx 20 seconds before the car cuts power due to the electrical increase. It is a very well illuminated 20 seconds but that is it. Gonna do some shopping for a light strip that needs less power. UPDATE: More lights means more amps used, so I trimmed the rope until the light remained on with the vehicle shutting down power to the light. I ran the light around the entire rubber trim and that turned out to be six inches too long (queue obscene comments). So, if you run into the problem of the rope light only remaining on for a short period of time, just trim it down a couple inches at a time. I added a lower amp LED strip to each light in the trunk a year ago and there are no problems or concerns. I have added an additional brake/tail light to the vehicle two years ago with multiple warranty services being provided afterward. Adding something to your car does not automatically void the warranty. Relax, unless it's a lease.

Hey great to know! I’m still on the fence about doing this since it seems like people are having issues. I ordered the light from the link and have everything to do the job but now I’m debating if I should even do it and maybe just connect the light to a battery pack instead to avoid any potential electrical issues. I’ve done wire work many times on other vehicles but doing anything electrical with the Tesla scares me hha

Installed on my 2021 M3P and had same issue like others where the button does not work anymore. After reading up on the LED strip, it consumes about 0.8A per meter. So definitely more than 2A extra on the tiny wiring. Too much to my liking and most probably does not leave enough power for the switch to work properly to open the frunk. Tomorrow I am putting a small relay to power the LED from the battery (fused), so the wiring off the light switch only needs to give little power to engage the relay. Will work 100%, for sure, and I will have the added advantage that the LED will get full 12V so brightest light. Will post on the results.

I did a similar thing with my Model S, but rather than modifying the factory wiring I just soldered my new wires into the existing light itself. I popped the light apart and drilled a couple of tiny holes in the end of the clear plastic to run the wire directly into the solder points. I later added a quick-disconnect near the factory light to make unrelated maintenance and repairs that require taking the frunk apart easier. The light unit I modified was actually an aftermarket upgrade brighter unit, so if I ever need to take it back to completely stock there will be no traces of my mod. I'm a lot less concerned with the appearance than with the functionality of being able to see what's in the frunk when there is stuff in it. The factory light is so low in the cavity that it's completely covered up and useless if there's anything at all in the frunk. Same with the trunk lights - I put strip lights under the parcel shelf/privacy screen and now I can see to work around in there even when it's piled high with stuff. Cars with trunks rather than liftgates would benefit from similar treatment.

How does your frunk open up by itself? I have a 2021 M3, but mine just pops open and I have to lift manually. Great video btw!

Cool vid, dig this mod for sure! Tesla should do this stock. Wish you didn't leave out one of the most important parts of the install - the wire connections... Do you have that to post somewhere?!

It was tough to film and solder at the same time. I figured most people know how to solder or can check RU-vid for it. I just wanted to show which wires to use. After doing the mod I should have used easy wires taps vs cutting and soldering. Next time!

Which struts did you end up using for the frunk pop up?

Wish you went into the wiring more. Do the lights go off when frunk is closed?
@netmatic8402
@netmatic8402 2 года назад
Since it’s wired to the light that is suppose to stay on even when it’s closed, the LED strip will remain on as well

Have you tried it in the trunk? Same concept but tuck it under the weather seal for the trunk.

If Tesla were a German car brand this would have come standard. Alas 🤔
@Jeroenneman

You're delusional. You can configure a Audi of up to almost 100 grand and still pay extra for seat heating. Hell, last time I checked, I could take the "luxury" package on a BMW, and still not have adaptive cruise control... Premium German brand my ass. Everything is an option with those guys.
@rodolphendessabeka8721
@rodolphendessabeka8721 2 года назад
@@Jeroenneman I'm not delusional at all. Yes German luxury brands do come with options. However when comparing the Model 3 to the Audi E-tron GT for example, the Model 3 in this specific video leaves much to be desired. Go to the South African Audi website, download the price list and look at the standard equipment including the paint. That will settle it.

When the frunk was closed, was the right turned off? I think the original frunk light was always turned on???? because it is the security light???

I left a phone in there and it turned off after about 5-8 minutes. Not sure if it turned back on if I start driving.
