It's so amazing just to simply see a recording this old... to see actual people who were alive in 1896, just walking around on the beach. All long since dead...
love these. nae been ti Brighton, furthest doon av bin is Cornwall. amazing this is still around, eh! 1896! 'e year affore mi Great Granda was born. an amazing man, av his WW! photae. he'd bin about seventeen atthe time. best picture I've seen of him & there aren't many. so... good. good!
"History" is not taught in schools; have to do that on one's own. I truly believe that if the history of a single product were taught, we'd learn much more than we do. All subjects and items are historical, even the pencil.
i remembering olden days of the world !!!!!!!its so cute and all r happpy and enjoying her life !!!!!!!!!but nowadays always parents torture childrens to study !!study!!!!study!....
years ago I had a very old boss, a real good dude....he grew up when men wore those old fashion bathing suites with a top on them. He told me that cops actually patrolled the beaches to make sure men kept their tops on as it was considered quite indecent for a man to be topless at the beach.
This is footage from back then. Keep in mind that back then, Swimsuits had not been invented yet, not until the mid 1900's at least. People back then also didn't go to the beach without clothing on, since being nude was considered improper. My grandparents tell me that in the time of their parents and grandparents, people didn't necessarily go to the beach for the simple reason of tanning.
@strongman016 You know what? On second thought i have to say , that actually a few of the new-borns from circa 1896 may actually be alive ( thought not in that footage) since there are a few people who live to their 120's. But in the whole, you are absolutely correct and it sort of boggles the mind a bit since essentially yes, everyone in the footage or not is dead and has been for many many years.
The oldest confirmed living people today were all born in 1896. 3 Americans, 1 Japanese, 1 Italian and 1 Frenchman, apart from those 6 who are still alive, everyone else who walked the earth when this was filmed would be dust.
very depressing but very true...and to watch that and think that each one of those people had their own lives and their own stories. its very depressing
@strongman016 It might sound surprising, but that's not necessarily true. The confirmed oldest living person int he world as of Aug. 15, 2011, is Besse Cooper of the United States. She is 114 years, 354 days old. She was born in 1896, the year this was filmed. The No. 2 oldest living person was also born in 1896. Weird, huh?
Nothing has changed since then... You wouldnt have no radio, car, electronics, big school, not as much education. you would have to work when u are little. life back then was a mess just like how is now.
Yeah, I figured that one out, my mistake. I had looked it up and I realized what I was thinking of was the bikini. The bikini wasn't exactly invented that early...
It is odd watching these people...beautiful..but heartbreaking really...They have no idea what will be happening in about 15 yrs, or worst still, in 1925, that the seeds were being sown by a madman...in Austria....But I'm glad for them, really..
to thelxtlan: yeh, i do know what you mean....seeing these people walking the beach 100+ years ago....all dead now. Seeing it on film as opposed to just an old photo makes it far more potent
back then, going to the beach did'nt always include actually getting in the water - they went for a stroll. and they did'nt go to be tanned, that's why the ladies always had umbrellas with them. and the bikini has been dated back to the roman empire - but it was thought as being... prententious in the la belle epoque.
Not to be crass, but think how much everybody stank back in those days. Imagine being on a crowded subway in the heat of Summer. Men often owned only one good suit, and aired it out at night. We probably were more "smell oriented" back then.
junaidfaiz, nudism is not vulgar automatically and in those "good ol' days" there was lots of true vulgarity. Just read any of Upton Sinclair's books on how workers were treated. And, yes, the women dressed gracefully but, please note, this was a residual affect of the Elizabethan era where being uptight about natural bodily sensuality and so forth was anathema and based on archaic and unrealistic values where women were kept downtrodden and the rich undermined the Bill of Rights philosophy.
This is important as it's the very beginning of film making by R W Paul and there was the start of a small film industry in Brighton and Hove. The Americans then stole the ideas! Look in Hove Museum for an extremely interesting exhibition of old film and the history of film making in Sussex.
Haha, it would be great if he were still alive. You could ask him about this film at the beach. "What??" he'd reply. Then you could ask him about all the uncomfortable clothes he had to wear. "What????"
@nottheduck1 I probably could. You should create a RU-vid account called CaptainObvious; but I'm sure you'd be the first to point out that the account name is already taken. Thanks for your comment, though. I was quite confused wondering if everyone in most videos from the late 50s-early 60s were actually alive and kicking. Thanks to you, the matter has been resolved and we can all move on with our lives.
"Swimsuits had not been invented yet, not until the mid 1900's at least." Uh, no. Swimsuits certainly existed very beginning of the 1900s. Generally they were very full affairs both for men and women. Women's being like short dresses of the time (ruffly, etc) and men's looking much as they would in thermal underwear.
What's with the woman in the white jacket and pants carrying what looks like a Tesco bag up the beach? Was she born 100yrs before her time? 19secs onwards.
@strongman016 and little do the kids in that video know that if they are lucky enough to live beyond their late 50's they will get the pleasure of living through 2 world wars!
okay so I'm gonna lay it on you real easy so you don't get confused. You say you disagree, that society nowadays is much more technologically advanced and people are generally less ignorant, well that may be true in some regards but I think that while society is more technologically advanced as well as healthier, I think we've devolved socially and are becoming more alienated and angry as a society. If only we had the same values today that we had back then things would be much better
So this is how they threw a beach party back in the days huh? I wondered if chicks flash their breast like the last spring break I was at. Girls Gone Wild 1896!!!!
in 100 years or a thousand years from now it wont be to big of change as compared to 100 years before now (7-17-09)...because recording technology is so crisp and clear, a picture or image from 3436 wont look that antiquated to some one in 3936 that is if technology stays the same or improves,,,,,
continued on the phone, or watching television, or on the computer, and also clothes have gotten worse as well. While there are some good things like less disease, and sexism and racism, we have more suicide, depression, anxiety, disdain for authority, and I rarely see truly happy people. Nothing good ever lasts, I'm pretty sure wherever you live sucks
