Thanks for the heads up before the part about Brighty’s demise, Matt. I stopped listening there and in my world Brighty lived to a ripe old age, frolicking with his donkey amigos and relatives and enjoying an all you can eat wild growing buffet, then died peacefully surrounded by family and friends.

Just finished the book - a treasure of literature! And Ms Henry understandably ended her book on a more uplifting theme. But we in Southern California have many donkeys living wild in Reche Canyon near Riverside and they roam the streets and rural areas freely helping themselves to gardens . We drive carefully but it’s fascinating to be waiting at a stop sign in the town of Highgrove and find one’s car surrounded by curious donkeys - and then they amble away unhurriedly knowing they are fed by loyal activists ,

I read the story of Brighty as a child and visited the Grand Canyon when I think they were still using burros to go down the canyon. That was in the early 70s. I could be wrong though. It’s on my bucket list to do a pack ride down the canyon. Mules are so sure footed and comfortable to ride.

It is a dangerous ride; management of the animals is not what it used to be. Same with Havasupai Falls--there are plenty of people like me who fell off and had to be airvacked out.

I used to be a mule wrangler on the south rim and this is exactly how I would tell the brighty story!! Except I didn’t know the ending and that just absolutely wrecked me
