Fantastic in depth review thankyou. Just made contact with UTC to order myself a pro based off this review. While I love my trackIR, I really am getting fed up with the amount of wires around my slimming area, and it is frustrating when it keeps losing connection and locking up while I’m looking around the cockpit. If this is as good as you’ve stated in that department, then I guess I’ve just fixed 2 birds with 1 stone. 👍
That is a bit misleading information, to be honest. The device itself can't have any effect on the lag, since it's basically a three wide angle IR LEDs flashlight, while the camera and the software is the same to the other IR trackers. It is possible to visually compare the effectiveness of such clips. I'd suggest comparing this UTC unit with the other two most popular clips on the market. Namely, the Trackhat Clip and TrackClip Pro (if you happen to have one). Just shoot all three of them with the camera and you'll be able to see directly the difference in the angle and brightness of each clip's LEDs. It's best to have all three of them in the frame at the same time. Just place them parallel to one another and move/rotate the camera itself. BTW, I heard the guys from EDTracker are planning to make a 6DOF head tracker at some point. That's something I'm really looking forward to.
Hey bud. Well actually it isn't. I say this because I have tested numerous devices, as you may already know, and this is the conclusion to my findings. Now I certainly don't believe in "I said it, so you better believe it" but these are the results as I found them. If you get the chance to test the UTC II maybe you too will find the same results. This UTC II device appears to have a much better quality of LED leading to the following results; 1) giving a much wider angle + field of view dramatically reducing loss of signal (this seems to be the most significant change). 2) Because the LED's are wider, bright or bigger (no idea which) the signal seems to work better even with ambient light (no other device can cope with such ambient light). 3) This appears to translate that the signal to the camera is stronger and therefore any movement is picked up instantly instead of being lost briefly before catching up with itself (lower latency). I did consider making a side-by-side comparrison but it would be very difficult if not impossible to show which was most effective. I might return to this idea later but I have a number more Tracking devices to review first. EDTracker have been working on their wireless device for a while and it is due out this year, I forget now if that is going to be 6DOF but it would be amazing if it was.
Hello there :) After all, it's those three IR LEDs that do the trick. And I guess the ones used in the UTC clip are of a better quality. But since it's something that can be compared directly, I'd suggest simply doing the side by side comparison. You could use the same PS3 camera for that on its working setting so that the result would be extremely clear. It would be very difficult if you had to somehow move the clips at the same time, but since all movement is relative, you could leave the clips in place and move the camera instead. So, the only complexity here would be to attach the clips to something that could support them while placed alongside one another. Either way, the brighter and "wider" the diodes are, the better. No doubt about that. I don't think the wireless EDTracker will have 6DOF, really. They indicated it will take a long time before the integrations happens. By the way, making EDT wireless is a much more complicated task thank making an IR clip wireless, since the latter doesn't transmit any information, so even that development will probably take some time.
Yeah that was my first thought; just one issue with that is that having both side-by-side you will inevitably obstruct one with the other. For reference I did use the same camera, positioned in the same location, same distance, the same basically. It just seemed to perform better. With regards to EdTRacker well yes, I don't pretend to understand how they are going to implement 6DOF without a camera, but they are pretty smart guys over there lol!
Obstruct one with the other? But they are not that wide... Even if you'd use the THC firmly attached to a pair of headphones and irremovable, you could certainly detach the UFC unit, since it's just Velcro'ed on. It's such an easy way to check an IR LED's brightness, really. By the way, I tried looking at my Trackhat Clip through the camera of my cellphone, and I came to the conclusion that Trackhat used pretty mediocre LEDs in it. The angular brightness falloff is staggering. Would be really interesting to see how the UFC LEDs look on camera at different angles. Errrm, no, EDTracker guys are not going to do 6DOF without a camera :) Remember, I suggested the idea of using EDT for rotations and THC + camera for translations? Apparently, I wasn't the only one who had that idea in mind. They have actually tested that already and it seemed to work.
Agreed, the claims on latency are a little "off" since the physical hardware itself makes no contribution to that - it's all down to the camera and software, and user's PC. Construction looks nice though, nice moulded enclosure, looks much nicer than some alternatives... and glad to see they've paid attention to safety aspects around battery charging, by the sounds of things.
I hate wearing headsets, do they make a hat version? Currently use edtracker, but would perhaps like to move to battery-led system in the future. Any advice on reasonably priced monitors? my 32" fullhd tv is not looking good, spent nearly a day looking at proper pc monitors, 28-32" perhaps either resolution of 2560*1440, or ultra wide 2560*1080 (not sure how its supported in games).
+Ady Gosling Great question, i dont know for sure but i think perhaps not. Ill check though and get back to you. Monitors are an expensive and complex area, so I cannot make a suggestion that I can wholeheartedly stand behind at the moment.
The wireless EdTracker came out, you should check it out. I've avoided getting a TrackIR because I hate hats and seeing strange things in my peripheral vision. It's like, why increase my immersion with headtracking only to decrease it by seeing a baseball cap visor or plastic Y-prong thing coming out of the top? There are definitely some advantages to the TrackIR but I live in California and I've got a window opposite of my PC set-up, and even blackout curtains don't totally prevent the glare that comes around 3pm.
@@SimUKReviews So you need to make sure the camera has its normal IR-blocking filter removed (that would otherwise block wavelengths longer than about 750nm), then add a cut-off filter to only let light > 800nm in. Is that correct?
Sounds like you are on the right tracks...here is someone who knows considerably more than I do about this: riseofflight.com/forum/topic/48338-how-ps3-eye-camera-external-ir-filter-diy-adapter/
Honestly TrackHat. They all work very well, but TrackHat sells the complete package. If you already have a modified PSEye cam then UTC as it is more responsive and accurate IMHO (just remembered I promised someone a review comparison on this). The EDTRacker although brilliant is wired and only has 3DOF.
+Milan Kubík you can buy clips which allow you to mount it on a monitor or tv. Trackhat build their own and might sell them individually (I can't remember) maybe eBay for the same.
Does anyone have a reliable source for getting a ir sensor or cam that is suitable for gaming TrackIR alternative. I picked up a PS Eye from Amazon but it had the wrong lens in it for modification. I don't really want to shell out the insane money they are asking for TracIR..help?
Full kit available here: www.trackhat.org/product-page/trackhat-clip-plus-head-tracking-kit Review here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bk9lhAEGZkA.html Highly recommended.
www.delanengineering.com/shop/#!/PS3-Camera-IR-Filter-Removed/p/50254011/category=0 Another tracking device from the UK. There you get just the cam or a package which include the cam and the clip. There is also a mountig clip for the camera to attach them on you monitor. I don't bought them until now, cause I am not sure which device will be the best for my headphones.
Well I can sense you self opinionated arrogance already. If it was a sponsored video (it wasn't) then they both were. I earn absolutely nothing off the back of any sales of any product that I have reviewed on my channel. And still the UTC II is the better performer. Watch both reviews, watch the in-game footage and see for yourself.
whatever man. If you wanna side with some guy selling a cheap thing on a forum, fine. trackhat deserves the sales. they made theirown software but they dont charge hella money like trackir. best of both
Pixels. I like both sellers, they are nice, honest hardworking people. I don't care how they sell, where for how long it's all irrelevant. Head to head test, the UTC II is the better product. That's it.
