As I said before and I'll say it again. Toei should of took their time to give the animators a proper head start instead of just rushing into production. They're a ambitious studio but sometimes too ambitious to a point where their staff can't handle the load due to time schedule. This is a similar problem with their tokusatsu show super sentai; Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger.

Look, I love some of the old animators, that no longer work on the series. But ever since you started covering Super, you have thoroughly converted me to the Church of Tate. Really, as long as we have Tate and Shida on this series, I think I'll be pretty happy.

When they say this, do they mean "get a better character designer for Super"? Most of Z's animators already work on the show.

I think when people say "bring back the Z animators" what they actually want is cel animation or all digital animation. I think the line art is better in this Tournament of Power arc than it was during the first half of Super.

I will always wonder how good DBS would be if everything would went well from the beginning with schedule and stuff, how people would look at the whole series. Now it's like "yeah, hehe, episode 5" "shit Super, only DBZ" bla bla - some people are like "yeah, it got much better since U6 x U7/Future Trunks saga, so I kinda enjoy it" - some people like "I enjoy it no matter what" some people like "DBZ always > DBS" - but just would like to see people's reaction to the series if art/animation would be fine since beginning. I remember watching episode 5 for the first time and I was like - why people cry about this? It looks fine for me. Well, thats how I got interested in animation and stuff. Of course now it hurts my eyes if something looks bad, but I know how hard it is to animate and stuff so... No matter what happens, i'm somehow fine with it.

Frame placement and proportions are the main issue. Followed by fight choreography. And lastly power levels. The series has major flaws obviously but it’s getting noticeably better.

Never saw anyone asking for the old animators, but rather the old quality animation. The *tangible* animation. Sure Super has brighter colors, but that's about it. There's rare moments when the animation is like Z, such as Ultra Instinct Goku's movements. It might even surpass Z. I also quit liked the animation for the beginning of Goku vs Caulifla as SSJ2s. But Idk, hearing that the old animators are still there, kinda makes me think "Then what's Super's excuse?"

Th animation isn't the problem anymore it's the power scaling, characters, plot and storyline.

Great video. Always see this in places and it's pretty annoying, though I can't blame people if they don't know staff. The biggest issue with Super is the character designs and color design. Both inferior to what was in Z, so even when Super has a great piece of animation you'll have people saying "Z was better", when in reality people just liked how Z looked more, and doesn't really have to do with animation. We've got a bunch of good staff new and old on Super who interpret the current designs in different ways, some pretty great. Of course it still wouldn't hurt if we went back, but oh well. I'm glad we have talented staff regardless of my feelings on the current designs.

In my opinion, Super is just a product of its time, like the original Dragon Ball was in the 80's/90's. It's not that people changed or how they changed, it's how the whole INDUSTRY changed in 20 years. Inspirations evolved, working conditions evolved, kids' taste and parental requirements "evolved", times evolved. Everything around the industry found new form, and hardcore fans of old anime might just not like how the industry turned out. New anime have their own distinct style, and the talent is still there, there's nothing preventing you from loving new products, as I certainly do, but like old anime, I realize they are a product of this time, and will be seen in a different light 20 years from now. Super is in that middle spot where it's trying to please fans of the original manga/anime and be a marketable product for today's kids. This reflects into everything, from the animation style, story, music, and direction, ESPECIALLY direction. Anything you could point to as the Soul of Dragon Ball likely faded years ago, people need to get aquainted with this harsh fact. Only then can they look past the tonal discrepancies and appreciate Super for what it is with its ups and downs -- in exam -- an approximation of how Dragon Ball is perceived in the current world, or more bluntly, GT in the 2010's (and I loved the first 25 or so episodes from GT, I thought even the rest still retained some of that "soul"). Another example some people might agree more, are the prequels from Star Wars, or even Episode 7. The difference in tone is a little more obvious, yet the fans landscape is just as divided as it is here. Hope I made my point across.

We need new writers more than we need new animators.

Dragon Ball Z really used a lot of re-used animation on fights, and lets not forget the stalling with the staring, that saved a lot of time for animators back then. They also reused blow waves a lot and impact frams really effectively, but that doesnt mean Z as a series had back to back superb animation. The best stuff we've gotten is in Super, actually, and I grew up with DB, Z and GT watching it countless times... but people are just nostalgic.

Technically, this video tells us: "everything is changed, we have only a half from the half of the classics doing a real deal, and a half of that half is lost their skills or just can't give us their skill for one reason or another"

For me my biggest issue with super is the high saturation color and the high contrast shadows.

Bring back the Cell and Buu series animators/style for DBS. IMO, the Buu series had the best animatons at times. Also, the animators/style for the Android 13 movie as well.

If Shintani continues the Dragon Ball Series instead of only doing the new Broly Movie, we will get it back.

Hearing that the actual animators and supersvisors from DBZ are working on DBS was the final nail to my ”Make Super better” coffin... I can’t do this anymore, I quit Dragon Ball Super... It’s been fun and very, very, VERY painful!

Super interesting stuff! I really enjoy good animation, and I really want to broaden my knowledge on this topic, but I find it so freaking hard to even remember the animators names. I don't speak Japanese and so they more often than not all sound identical to me :'D

Finally someone made an in depth video about this. I'm tired of people still complaining about Super's animation and saying it's because of bad animators. The animators are amazing, it's their deadlines that aren't.

A couple others not mentioned, Tomekichi Takeuchi passed away in 2001 and Yukio Ebisawa (his work is considered the worst) the last Dragonball related thing he worked on was Son Goku and His Friends Return in 2008, he works on primarily Pokémon and Digimon and a few other projects.

Hey, I love your videos! This one was particularly enlightening. Had no idea Tate did so much of that Goku vs Majin Vegeta fight. I'll have to watch that again and look for glimpses of his style. No idea if you read comments, but I was wondering if you knew how many frames per second Dragon Ball is animated on? I THINK it might be 24, but whenever I see Shida's work, I have to wonder if it's 29.97.

Super Supervisor, a new Earthling form

I just wish Studio Cockpit was still apart of Dragon Ball. I loved the energy they always put in and I may have used the nose and larger eyes in my own drawings. Look at Goku vs. Cell or Battle for the Universe with Goku Vs. Kid Buu for prime examples. But once you notice its an episode by Studio Cockpit you know you're in for a treat

I just hate Super's character and color design.

As much as I think the animators make a huge difference, I think the over-reliance of digital photo manipulation and filter abuse has drastically changed the look of the show. There's still some great digital matte painters, but not nearly as many great backgrounds and foregrounds like we saw with Dragonball or Z. The convolution of the color palletes are also just blech. I wish they'd go and re look at the old Dragonball and Early Z color choices. Once we got to the Buu arc, many of the shadows just got too dark. And the sometimes 4 tones (Deep shadows/Cavities, Broad Shadows, Midtones Highlights) on the skin of most characters has become too much. It looks overproduced. I think almost everyone would be fine with duotone or flats for most shots if the backgrounds were hand painted more often.

Super's greatest animation, is better than Z's greatest animation. While I love Z's more consistent and classic artstyle, Super objectively has better animation, but when the animation schedule is in their favor.

Super's animation has the same problem every Toei series has ever had (including DBZ) - their animation departments are underpaid and understaffed, especially on the weekly shows they produce. Toei is the massive company they are because they focus on mega popular manga adaptations with lower costs from cutting corners, which means they can provide massive amounts of content for relatively low cost to rabid fanbases of their different series thanks to their quantity over quality approach to production. Don't get me wrong, they employ many talented people, but those talented animators work on razor thin resource budgets and with constant unfeasible deadlines, so you rarely see their best work. I imagine a lot of these talented individuals only stay with Toei because of job security and a guaranteed paycheck, two concepts that are becoming increasingly rare in the modern anime industry from the production side of things.

I love how fluidly all of their styles flow between each other, I feel like a lot of the episodes would look a lot better if they just added thick lines, I forgot the name of the animator, but he helped make a couple of the first few episodes and his art style really breathed life into early super

I'm gonna take a risk and say that I like the animation AND the art how it is. Sure there's flaws here and there but if you watched the OG DBZ (not the one with the corrections) you're gonna see that Super is waaay superior Animation/Art wise And this is just my opinion

Personally, with the new episode showing great promise of how good the animation COULD be, i wouldn't mind a little break from super to actually work on ground breaking episodes and animation. That way once atleast 5 episodes are done, touched up, cleaned, and ready to air, they are already almost done with atleast 2 new episodes. If any anime in history deserves that kind of attention to detail, it's Dragon Ball. It could take atleast 2 months for that to happen and i'd be happy just to see dragon ball return to its roots while subsequently using the new style of animation for the series. One thing i compliment the new animation style in the newest episode, is that they. Went. Off. Model. Which is the best thing about Z. They didn't just stick this one sheet of paper for goku. They took every element of surroundings into that style if animation. The battle damage, the wind blowing through hair, the movement of clothing, the expressions. All organic. Personally i can understand why they'd want to continue using this new dragon ball heroes, shiny and more "anime-ish" type of look. To make the animation process faster ofc. Theres nothing wrong with that. Whats actually wrong with it, is that it has no soul. It feels lazy, as much as it probably isn't. I'm no animator, but if i were, i'd do everything i could to put heart into a series like dragon ball. A series that's been in our lives forever. So to see the new episode just made me believe that this is start of new beginning and a brand new chance for super to redeem itself once more. Toei.... you'd be a god damn building of fools to take that for granted. If thery're so involved in fan service, why is this style of animation that last on their priority list? since day one ppl wanted super to atleast feel like a continuation of Z. Not dragon ball heroes the show. What i mean by that is, not only was super's animation bad, we all know that. I'm talking about how "clean" and "cutesy" they look. That style, to me, doesn't suit dragon ball. Stuff like blood couldn't be added to the show due to censor yet they say damn and hell and even stab eachther.... C'mon toei... C'mon. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that this new animation that was brought to us feels like Z in a modern light. Its like z and super had a baby. or fused. They really need to continue this

I don't give a shit about weither or not the old animators are working on the show or not. I want Toei to change the way they produce episodes. They make them so fast and in such little time that the art and animation 90% of the time is at He-Man levels of quality. The show still looks bad despite the cries from those who defend the show, anyone who says otherwise is blind and doesn't know what quality art and animation looks like. Even worse than the art and animation is the writing, which right now in the UT arc is worse than what I imagine a kindergardener might come up with. The manga is a definite improvement over the show, but only as much as Toyotaro is able to salvage Toriyama's bad writing by.

You forgot to mention the best animator the buu saga ever saw … Keisuke Masunaga! He’s responsible for the beautiful art style shown in the SS2 Goku vs Kid Buu fight, he also animated that BEAUTIFUL shot of SS3 Goku slowing flying down to the rock formation at the end of the SS2 Goku vs Kid Buu fight. He animated the last half of the SS2 Gohan vs Cell Kamehameha beam struggle, Ultimate Gohan vs Buutenks, Goku and Vegeta vs the fake Gohan, Gotenks, and Piccolo, Goten and Trunks raising their energy for Goku on the lookout, etc.

lel then the old dbz animators became shit or... Things evolve too and they don't use the same mehods as back then. We don't need the old animators back. we need the same animation methods/style.

Always said I love the way DBZ looks. It's a night and day difference with Super using very bright colors, lazy drawings with little details. Yes DBZ had some flaws but it was barely noticeable to me when I watched it. Super is very noticeable with the flaws. One of the reasons why I grew to love DBZ is how epic the characters looked, as a kid and teenager I looked up to. Super looks way too childish not looking epic and fierce like DBZ. I know the younger generation kids will disagree with me because they grew up watching DBZ Kai which is the same style as Super.

The animations of sangoku at the beginning of episode 114, was really dbz-ish. ( in a good way! ) They did this a couple of times during this episode tho.

i didnt know there were so many ppl creating each episode. its like theyre taking turns. no wonder earlier super episodes suck and now theyre getting better. i still miss the old dbz vibe though. its always classic and nostalgic.

The in-betweeners are the problem. The key "cels" tend to be Z-quality, but when the in-between frames are cheaply and badly done, the whole thing feels...off. Toei's recent practice of hiring the cheapest in-betweeners they can is why Sailor Moon Crystal inspired so many mock blogs, and Super hasn't been much better in that regard. But as you've pointed out, the problem is definitely NOT key animators or animation directors.

It's always been known it's about the time constraint that was created BECAUSE of Toei forcing out the series with such an early release date. We have SO many episodes that look like they are still in development which has given this sub-par Fanimation feel to it. Battle Of Gods has a strange rollercoaster of animation quality. Goku's battle with Beerus was a wide-range of both awful and pretty good. My view hasn't really been "Bring back the old animators" it's been "Bring back the old style, with a slightly updated look, have far greater animation than the OG series, have consistent writing, and connect the series together fluidly" and NEITHER of these has happened in a CONSISTENT fashion. It's jsut been a constant RETCON after RETCON with this series. The Art style is some... held back, roblox version of what the old-style was. And the Animation(Because of time crunch) is BELOW the originals in SO many ways it's ridiculous. It should NEVER be worse than the originals, which from what I have heard had a WAY smaller budget, thus creating the staple visuals of the DB Series. Writing: Just plain bad. Powerscaling is awful, there's really no difference between God forms and Regular Forms. Everyone can fight a Godly being. Kefla shouldn't have been able to fight Goku in his God state but did. Trunks somehow gained the Power of Natsu Dragneel's Friendship and stood toe-to-toe with Zamasu, holding his own and even overpowering the foe, a feat in which not even Vegito could do. So it was stupid. The ending for that Arc was even worse. Unlike anything I've ever seen. So pisspoor it's not even worth consideration. The Super series is so poorly made that the INSANE price of $44.99 is outrageous and isn't deserved by ANY means. I understand, and I can even forgive their HUGE dip in quality. But to CHARGE me $50 for crap? Yeah. That's when we draw the line. EVERYONE'S complaints isn't going towards "wow this one singular episode is garbage" it's going towards "Wow this will be on a DVD/Blu-Ray that'll run me up at LEAST $50?" They are more concerned that they wouldn't want to purchase the seasons or compiled Volumes of Episodes of their favorite franchise BECAUSE of these dips in quality. Resurrection of Freeza has NO improvement that's noticeable in the Blu-Ray release. It's STILL just as bad, and sometimes can be even worse. They shouldn't be RUSHING these DVD's to store shelves, they should be re-doing the entirety of what THEY fucked up, and giving us the Old Art-style with an updated look, and fluid animation that surpasses the originals. Update to a modern era of animation that's worthy of $50-70*If that's what it becomes* I spent hundreds upon HUNDREDS of dollars on this franchise. Because I fucking LOVED the series THAT much. Dragonball Z is the series that made me want to draw manga, and started me on a path to learning. I invested SO much time into it that I WANT to purchase the seasons but due to the lack of quality in content I can't think of any reason why it should have my hard-earned money. So.. It's not a question of "Bring back the old animators" it's a question of "Is this WORTH $50+?" The Battle Of Gods movie and Resurrection of F movie shows us that they CAN do it, they CAN animate amazingly(It's movies I know the series itself wouldn't have THAT well-animated scenes the OG series didn't but.. lemme explain) when they are given TIME to produce. Takahashi is a SHINING example that they were forcing a new aesthetic of Dragonball that nobody likes. And in his recent episodes he gave us the orgasms we deserved with an art-style that threwback to the OG with a modern look. if Super as a WHOLE is changed and animated in this fashion I'd spend $80 per season if they charged that much, $50 I would buy all the available seasons. I'd drop $150 if I had to. But right now the seasons should ONLY be worth $20 IF that. I'm really pushing it for $20. Should be $15 buuuut. Eh.

It isn't only the animation and art that made dbz good but the close combat choreography, the fighting sequence like e.g. the fight between goten and trunks was really epic. The animators in dbz excelled in the fights of dbz not to mention they had these wow factor in almost if not every fight.

I don't see what is wrong with super's look? It looks basically the same but more vibrant and hd. I don't see what people see so bad about it. If nobody told me I would've thought the same people made it.

There is hope, video creater. Since the last few weeks (since goku vs jiren round 1 to be exact) the animation's been really good. I especially loved the ssg animations in the last ep's. ULTRA INSTINCT IS BACK BABY.

I mean, yeah. It'd be nice to see that classic DBZ art style aesthetic. But is it genuinely necessary? Probably not. And I think the main reason why I don't mind DBS's aesthetic is because it's managed by the guy who did all the promo art and we've been exposed to that art for YEARS. So, it's a style that I (and we fans) have been exposed to and therefore, I didn't mind it. And I still don't.

One animator from Z I'd like to see come back is Masaaki Iwane, but he seems pretty occupied with Pokémon sometimes animating entire episodes himself, I'd also like to see Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru do more for the series.
