High-key tilted that this was the very top comment, and spoiled the review immediately for me. I *hate* that RU-vid on desktop, makes comments visible without needing to scroll down.
Hey Anthony, would love it if you could give Amynedd's "16-Bit Adventure" a mention. It's a music project of GeoGuessr legend and fence-climbing mad lad Tom Davies aka GeoWizard, one of RU-vid's greatest.
They are choosing not to make 'albums' anymore. They find the process of banging out 10+ tracks to be extremely exhausting, and a waste when in a few months people will be wanting more. They are doing a 4-part EP series titled 'Post Human'. This is the first one, and the other 3 will be released throughout 2021. They said the rest of the EP's will be shorter, between 5-7 tracks. Jordan mentioned this one is 'so close' to an album in terms of amount of tracks because they already had Ludens. Then obvi Itch For The Cure is just an intro. They want to focus on 5,6 to 7 songs instead of 10+ because they want better quality tracks, instead of losing your head over filling an entire album. This way they can release more music, more frequently and basically have better quality tracks in the process.
POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR ! *EASTER EGGS HERE* ! *Dear Diary* Was originally called 'Survival Horror'. The song title and some lyrics are references to Keeper's Diary from the Resident Evil games, where it describes a deadly virus. Keeper's Diary also contains the phrase 'Tasty Itchy', seen in the lyrics. In Verse 2 Oli Sykes' dog Luna can be heard barking. Bit of controversy regarding the similarity of the main riffs in this and 'Swerve City' by Deftones. *Parasite Eve* Parasite Eve is a 1998 Survival Horror genre game, with a virus related storyline. The female AI is actually Oli Sykes' wife Alissa. The chorus was originally 'If we survive the infection, will we remember the lesson.' But was changed given the serious nature of the Covid-19 pandemic currently. They started writing this song before Covid-19 really began spreading. The chorus line, 'If the Suspense doesn't kill you, something else will' is from the Resident Evil game. Chorus' 'wash your hands' metaphor related to Covid-19. *Teardrops* Sounds like Linkin Park Commentary on the youth's tech addiction, depression and drug problems. A social and personal piece. *Obey* A Commentary on political powers and oppression. Obey we hope you have a lovely day is a juxtaposition of being told to enjoy yourself whilst being oppressed. Feature's Yungblud, Yorkshire native and friend of Oli Sykes'. Yungblud's line 'commemorate a wonderful life', may be a reference to the track 'Wonderful Life' on BMTH's last full length 'amo.' Lots of nods to Nu Metal, such as the accented verse similar to Bodies by Drowning Pool. *Itch for The Cure* A reversed title of 'Cure For The Itch' by Linkin Park from Hybrid Theory. Homage to the band and also a reference to their clear inspiration on BMTH for this album. Introduction for Kinglasyer. *Kingslayer* 'Kingslayer' is a prize awarded to players on the game Call of Duty when they kill the top ranked player in the current game. Features Baby Metal, as does the *unreleased* track 'feels alright underground', from 2018. A Clear mix of all era's of BMTH. Including vocal styles, growling, screaming, singing and gutturals. *1x1* Personal reference's to Oli Sykes' addiction problems in the past. "Put me out of my misery" chorus line is a reference to Linkin Park's 'Given Up', with the same lyrics in it. Features Nova Twins, after they followed Oli Sykes on Instagram he asked them to feature, as he was already a massive fan. Title to be pronounced 'One by One'. *Ludens* Features in Death Stranding game, was written in one week to be used last minute on the video game. Was written last year long before Covid-19. Yet has many coincidental and scary references such as, 'how can we form a connection if we can't even shake hands', which relates to the nationwide lockdowns that went on. And is also an exact line from the game. In the music video drummer Matt Nichols can be seen swearing a face covering, long before they were necessary. The line 'don't be surprised when the [programme] starts to crash' is from the game Death Stranding. 'Ludens' is latin for 'Playing'. Suggests the chorus line, 'we need a new luden' is another game reference meaning 'we need a new player.' But also mostly comes from Kojima Production's (the game developer) tag line 'From sapiens to Ludens.' Verse 2 was changed from "names can dig so many graves, you won't know where to stand" on the single and soundtrack version to "names will make me blow the brains out of all the kids in class" on the album version. *One Day The Only Butterflies Left Will Be In Your Chest As You March Towards Your Death* Amy Lee's appearance on the track arose from Evanescence contacting BMTH with legal threats, given the similarity of Bring Me's song 'nihilist blues' to Evanescence's song 'Never Go Back'. It was settled and Amy Lee has official writing credits on nihilist blues. The two parties insist their were no bad feelings and to prove it Amy Lee, being a fan, featured on the song. The song is about climate change. Amy Lee's part is meant to be the only 'human' part of the album (give the title Post Human), she represents Mother Nature and a fading past of nature, humankind and safety. It ends with a flipped version of the common phrase 'love is in the air' by using 'isn't'. *Whole Album* The album was written, recorded and mastered entirely digitally, as all members were in lockdown in both the UK and US (bassist Matt Kean was stuck in LA). It was mixed and additional compositions were done by Mick Gordon who wrote and produced the game Doom Eternal's soundtrack. It is the first instalment in the Post Human era of the band which they have said is to include 4 EPs.
Definately, it went from me entirely losing all interest in them to actually solid enjoying the back half of this EP. With liking aspects of the first half
Loved sempiternal and thats the spirit (though thats the spirit didnt age as well for me going back to it i dunno) as a young teen. Hated the fact that oli cant fucking sing and that the last ep was so meh. I guess i should give this one a listen?
dude was this close to giving it a 9-10 on his twitch stream after listening to parasite eve, kingslayer, 1x1 and dear diary, and had to tap out after he verbally pondered how it would affect his indie cred to score this thing that high. hilarious, awesome that it scored so high and glad he is appreciating it and being objective.
Fun fact: the "AI" sounding vocals on Parasite Eve were done by Oliver Sykes's wife, her Portuguese accent probably accounting for the strange tone they have. There's video of this in the vlogs they were posting as they were making the EP.
Context matters a lot. Without the context of the EP even the lyrics can be kinda cringey. Also some songs get better as you listen more. Tracks of the week are heard once, albums or EPs have multiple listens.
Fun fact: Ludens wasn’t supposed to be on this EP but with COVID-19 and lockdown happening all over the world a lot of the lyrics in the song seemed to fit the feeling of not being able to be social with family and friends: “How do I form a connection when we can’t even shake hands”.
In an interview around the time the first singles from this ep came out, Oli said he was playing doom and loved the sound track and that was part of his inspiration to dive back into the heavier side of music.
@@ryanbollinger1759 Generic metal/deathcore fuck yeah bro 8/10 super deserved lol. Should have got a 3-4 max that genre proves time and time again there is nothing new to offer.
@@miserirken nah I wouldn’t say shitty. It’s definitely got some nice qualities to it, but it’s hurt by the extremely long track list. And no, you can’t glorify Count Your Blessings over it.
Surprising to see parasite eve in fav tracks but I guess it was only time that melon would realise that it's a banger. 1 by 1 sounds like a Linkin park song, who cares it's super catchy and right amount of familiar in my opinion. And finally ludens was made for death stranding last year on a short deadline it's not a product of these pandemic sessions. It's just on the ep cause it's just as post apocalyptic as some of the other tracks.
@@lcxl6053 Every time i leave a comment on this channel someone recognises the it and that just makes my day. We're all here just hiding in the shadows i guess.
As someone who’s been a fan of BMTH since 2007 I’m glad they brought back some of their old metalcore sound on a few of the tracks. Kingslayer is such a great mashup of their older and newer styles and the Babymetal feature works surprisingly well.
fun fact: Oli, the lead singer, has been a huge linkin park fan since he was a teenager and that’s what inspired most of bmths music. and it’s very obvious on this album.
mispronounced would be more accurate i suppose, but for those that dont know he called it SURVIVAL ERROR and i think thats why he reuploaded, possible its a joke since the error he made was mispronouncing something as error.
Idk why everyone hates the closer. It's actually my favourite overall, the amount of emotion packed into it is insane and both singers are at their peak vocally here.
Ballads rely on the voices to work more than any other song. If you love Amy Lee’s voice it works but if it’s meh to you then it won’t. I think Amy Lee has an okay but not great voice so it’s okay to me
as a day 1 bmth fan and a day 1 fantano fan/watcher i've always been torn between my love for bmth and his disregard for them and what they've done (always being ahead of the curve, truly being the trendsetters for metalcore, deathcore, etc.). when the ultra pop That's the Spirit came out and he barely gave it the time of day i had given up, but this turn around to seeing my favourite project they've done in nearly a decade get an 8? an 8??? so hype. the lack of yellow flannel worried me but i had a feeling Anthony would enjoy this. Finn McKintey surely has a hand in this revelation that nobody is above some awesome metalcore, even anthony. Hell yea. and fantano, i rly think u should give sempiternal a second chance. songs like Antivist have peak slipknot vibes galore and are even more relevant today. it's rly worth your time.
I’m gonna be honest, I think Anthony is heavily biased against certain types of music, and he REALLY needs to disclose that instead of basically talking down to people who like music that he doesn’t like. Like why did he review that dance Gavin dance album when he so clearly doesn’t get this kind of music at all xD
This is one of the best albums I’ve heard in a long time! I listened to Sempiternal but didn’t really like anything else they did. Until now. The direction they took with all their albums makes complete sense now and this album is a best of BMTH, taking the best elements of the band. Absolutely monstrous album and Kingslayer..... HOLY FUCK! I really think this is going to be a very important album going forward like Hybrid Theory once was and think this album will be a time capsule for what 2020 was like for us all.
in a recent NME interview about this EP, oli talked about how the last song with Amy Lee is a song about the abusive relationship humans have with the earth. Amy takes the side of mother earth, and Oli is humanity that abuses and hurts the earth for selfish greed (complimented nicely by the more aggressive style in oli’s voice). It’s kind of a sweet way for oli to get some vegan-ish/environmental vibes out there and how we should care about more than ourselves and our own well-being for our time on this earth :-)
@@DannyBoy04101 It certainly is the worst song on the album, but I think with how the last song goes, it will serve as an outro/intro to next EP so I'm reserving my judgements until I hear the next EP
@@DannyBoy04101 i mean everyone certainly is entitled to their own opinion. It’s not banger status but i think it’s just a cool piece of music that shows how far bmth have come musically, and yea i think it’s a nice way to end the ep but another fast banger would’ve been nice too

My first listen of Kingslayer when Babymetal came in the tonal whiplash I experienced was so severe I actually doubled over with laughter, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. So yeah, I listen to that song like 3 times every day now.
that intro of parasite eve reminded me a lot of the ghost in the shell ost. i've never been a fan of bmth but this record really bangs. guess i might backtrack some of their older stuff.
If you like this ep, definitely give Amo and That's the Spirit a go. The stuff before that is very metalcore and quite removed from their current work. I like it, but I like a lot of trashy metalcore ...
That's the spirit is definitely my favorite release by them and you could possibly get into and album or two before that. I am a huge bmth fan and I love count your blessings and suicide season but I can totally say those albums from a standpoint are not very good even though at the time they were ahead of the curve
@@TheCivildecay I can't even call myself a fan of babymetal, but absolutely nobody goes out of their way to say shit like this without having _something_ to project
This album absolutely slaps. It’s crazy how much better and more creative and innovative BMTH is compared to the other Warped Tour bands and the scene in general of late. No disrespect to those bands but BMTH is setting the trends and everyone else is just following them
This band has been with me since middle school weirdly. I've always liked them but I didn't fully appreciate them or love them until later. Out of all the bands from my scene phase, the material they released during that time not only aged the best, but there's no other band from that scene remotely on their level
As a person who can't live without music, I love your channel. Bring Me the Horizon to me is the best hard rock / metal band currently in 2020. That's also pretty cool you're in Connecticut, I'm in Norwalk, CT.
the spine tingling piece from the intro of Parasite Eve is Ergen Deda, a Bulgarian folk song, check out not only Bulgarian but also Macedonian and Serbian folkore for some similar sounds, the music is very underappreciated in the world, IMHO unfairly so
They are not technically making Albums anymore. And man, I loved all of it! Despite you not seeming to be the biggest fan. KingSlayer definitely caught me off guard. It was AMAZING!!
My fav songs off the EP are “parasite Eve” & the collab w/ Amy Lee “one day....” - I just think they’re both so beautiful for completely different reasons. The collab with Amy is so unique & dark & heavy without actually sounding heavy, just the lyrical content & that ending is amazing! Cant wait for EP #2
Bring me has been setting trends for bands to follow since 2008. They have always been 1 step a head of the curve and although some people may not have liked their earlier albums in 10 years everyone will revisit them and appreciate them for the masterpieces they are.
@Morbid Emperor hmm not really, I actually very much enjoy their heavy material. But you just have to admit Count Your Blessings is filled with cringe “edgy” scene kids lyrics. Like, I don’t get why so many think they’re superior bc they like CYB when it’s the most mediocre deathcore there is. Like go listen to some good deathcore at least. Or at least support Suicide Seaosn which is the deathcore/metalcore album where they actually did something interesting. Also trend hopping? Really? That’s also very ironic considering the amount of bands that actually follow in BMTH’s direction whenever they switch up their sound.
@Morbid Emperor also, you really aren’t more superior bc you like their deathcore music. This “fangirl” thing used as some kind of condescending insult is getting very tiresome. You only make yourself look ridiculously pretentious.
@Morbid Emperor I've been a fan of BMTH since 2006 and the whole CYB era, but I have to admit that album is pretty mediocre and they haven't done anything but get better. BMTH is years ahead of what they where doing at the beggining, and the whole "metalcore" scene has done nothing but follow them since Suicide Season.
I remember commenting how much I was shocked by the sound on amo on that review and I'm now also shocked that this EP has pulled me back in. I hope, at least, BMTH keep heading into that harder direction because that's the good stuff to me. Also, Mick Gordon is God tier and while it sounds like a bit of a weird clash on paper, his production shines through.
honestly this is the best sound bmth has had so far in my opinion. For me it`s a good mix between their old heavy sound and the experimentation that has been going on in the releases of the last few years :) all in all i am happy and i would actually buy tickets again to see them life (if i could)
Absolutely, and the album is called Survival Horror. Also, "Itch For The Cure" is a reference to Cure For The Itch from Linkin Park. Edit: Also, I just realized the line "If the suspense doesn't kill you. Something else will" was a tagline for RE2. Man, I'm really digging this album.
@@miserirken I didn't pay attention to the lyrics of that as close as I could since I'm listening to the album at work. I'll have to give that one another listen. Thanks for the heads up.
It's good to keep in mind that Ludens was written in 2 days (iirc) to go into death stranding, i feel like if they had more time to grow the track, it would be the second best on the record.
Personally that one’s my second favorite only to Kingslayer. I know it’s messy but I actually kind of love how it touches on their electropop, alt-metal and metalcore phase all in one song. It’s a pretty unique creation
That's the spirit is still one of my favorites. I have heard oli sykes is a fan of chester bennington and I'm hearing more and more of his influence on bmth. I love that u recognized their numetal and alternative influence
I've been listening to this band since 2008, and this is definitely their best release since Sempiternal. It's been a wild ride following their progression over the years, but I feel like I'm enjoying that ride more now than I ever have.
I'm loving this EP at the moment, there's something about the blend of heavy guitars and epic electronic soundscapes in a nu metal style that is just completely my jam. Amo was a huge album for me as well. I can respect their earlier work but it never really hit me like say, veil of maya do. I think this new style suits the band really well though and look forward to their future releases.
God I remember hearing black and blue on music choice back in 08 and knowing I was gonna love them for a long time Here I am now, 12 years later and still hooked
