A mostly-forgotten victim of the 1969 murders committed by the Manson Family, Abigail Anne 'Gibbie' Folger is a bit of an enigma. Her family has never spoken publicly about her, and there are few photographs - those we have seen are in black-and-white. So I have colorized several pictures of her in an effort to bring Gibbie into the light, and into life.
Back to back photos of Abigail from 1967 Vogue (copyright Conde Nast)
Photos of Abigail with the fur vest (thumbnail image and picture with puppies) are by Witold K.
Music is "Ether" by Silent Partner, from the RU-vid Free Audio Library.

Thank you for highlighting the life of Abigail Folger, a sadly overlooked chapter in the Tate/LaBianca saga. Whenever we speak of Charles Manson the first image crossing our minds is that of Sharon Tate, and that is only natural. Sharon was young, glamorous, beautiful and, on top of everything else, very pregnant. Sharon led, in the public eye at least, an enchanted life, a life many dreamed they had. In the natural order of things those bestowed with such charmed lives are expected to live out a "happily ever after" ending, not the horrific fate dealt to Sharon, but her tragedy, sad as it is, isn't the only tragedy that needs to be told. There is a number of other victims, Parent, Sebring, Rosemary LaBianca, whose journeys have been sorely overlooked or ignored. One journey I find to be especially poignant is that of Abigail Folger. When I envision Abigail Folger I see a women born into wealth and privilege who recognized the lofty position she inherited and sought to finding meaning by joining the struggle against social and economic injustices. She also sought out life experiences that went beyond the cloistered environment of high society. Consequently, her relationships focused upon men such as photographer Jim Marshall and Wojciech Frykowski, men not only outside her economic circle but also, as she interpreted it, lived lives the way ordinary people were meant to live theirs. One unfortunate result of this was that Folger got drawn into the drug scene of Southern California. Abigail apparently lacked the intestinal fortitude to resist becoming an addict or, at the very least, resist using narcotics as a crutch for her own unhappiness. That seemed to be a common theme in her brief life: she went from job to job, at one point dedicating herself to an art gallery, her major in college, working in public relations, at another point following a boyfriend to New York to buy a bookstore, then back to another gallery, then again with the boyfriend at the bookstore. That was when she met Wojciech, the second of her proletarian boyfriends. She was quoted in a letter to a friend saying "My head has been very messed for a long time and, although I have known it all along, I have never done much about it. It is a time-worm case of feeling that I let everything happen to me instead of making it happen...". I think in Abigail's final weeks she was beginning to come to terms with her wayward existence. She had arrived at the realization that her privileged background practically compelled her straighten out her life and finally focus upon those things that were truly meaningful. Both her friends and therapist agree that Abigail was poised to break up with Wojciech. She was scheduled to fly off to San Francisco that Saturday to celebrate her birthday together with her mother and when she'll return (after both vacating 10050 Cielo Drive) Folger was going to hand him the news. If there is any proof of that I think we might find it in the fact that on her last night on Earth Folger was sleeping in her bedroom while Wojciech was sleeping on the couch.

I understand why Sharon Tate gets most of the attention. But I think Abigail Folger would have been someone I would have been more apt to want to get to know if given a choice. Nothing against Sharon Tate or the others that died, I just think Abagail had a good heart. And that is an attractive thing. Sad and tragic for them all. RIP.

She seems like a fascinating and truly compassionate woman. We were robbed indeed. The Folger Family has done much, I believe, to offset their wealth through charitable works and it’s likely that Abigail would have been instrumental in that effort.

What a tragedy that Abigail Folger was only 2 days away from her 26th birthday the night she was murdered. There are very few photographs of her available from the time she was alive. She looks beautiful in the colorized photos and she deserves to be remembered for the kind and caring woman that I've heard she was. Abigail, Steven Parent, and unborn baby Paul are the 3 most forgotten victims most of the time except for maybe Gary Hinman and Donald Shea " Shorty" .

I think there's several types of murderers... Those who use guns, and although the motive is often personal, there is physical distance between the shooter and the victim.. Then there are killers who choke or strangle their victims, and although it is very much is physical encounter, it's usually not messy, and probably the most quiet means of taking a life.. But I believe the murderer that uses a knife, is of a slightly different breed... The murderer who can shoot, or even strangle another human being to death might not be able to stomach killing by repeatedly plunging a steel blade into someone in a bloody, frenzied attack.. Krenwinkel did this on 2 occasions, and Watson at least 3 times.. It is very heartbreaking to imagine how terrifying the last minutes of Abigail's life must have been for her... And yes, though she was born into privilege, she generously shared her time & resources to help others.. Great job Allie.

Little known fact there's a reason that there are no stories about her when it comes to the killings. Her dad was awesome and he threaten to sue and destroy the credibility of anyone who used his daughter to ake a face of a murder. He wanted her to be remembered for who she was and he would not stand for her to be used as a mascot for a murder. He would sue you if you did, and that's why little people know about her

Abigail Folger was a highly educated, generous woman from an old money family. Her parents loved her very much and they did everything they could to keep her name clear of being associated in any way with the horrifying monsters who chased her and stabbed and struck her until they finally killed her. Unlike her killers, Abigail felt a sense of duty to serve the disadvantaged and she worked every day for free in the free clinic at Haight Ashbury. The world is worse off because she’s gone. And they killed her in the most terrifying way. And that is just one reason why they should all remain in prison. Punishment is a part of Justice.

That was a wonderful tribute to Abigail. Like all of the other victims, she had a lot of potential to do well in life. I agree with commentors who've pointed out that some of the victims, such as Abigail, Steven Parent and Gary Hinman have been forgotten. It seems like there's a lot of effort in keeping Sharon Tate's memory alive. She wasn't the only one who was murdered. There's never been any mention of Abigail's family going to parole hearings. I saw Steven Parent's sister at a parole hearing for Susan Atkins. That's the only one I believe she's gone to. Debra Tate and Jay Sebring's nephew, Jay is very active going to the hearings.

They were humans, who did a monstrous thing, no doubt. My reason for raising the question of whether they were monsters is that I think if we simply label them monsters, we fail to learn valuable lessons. Labeling them monsters separates them from us in ways that seem unproductive. Yes, what they did was horrifying and monstrous and absolutely should have been punished as such.
