All those years trying to get her to leave them on, now she's not keen to be without (mind you given how cold Winters get around there, I don't blame her wanting a toasty tummy!)
As a vet tech at an exotic animal practice, bravo to you for how well you’ve desensitized your bird! Macaws are one of the more dangerous birds we work with (think about what a beak that can crack a walnut will do to your finger). Most of the time to do any services on them, we have to sedate them with gas, for their safety and ours. It’s always great when we have a bird that’s so well-handled and tolerant that we can do most services awake on them. Cheyenne is truly wonderful! I’m happy to say I’ve not yet been bit by a macaw (hoping to keep it that way). I have, however, been bit by a sulfur-crested cockatoo. The bite cut almost down to the bone and caused nerve damage in my finger. It was numb for almost two months. And to think, If that bird had been Cheyenne’s size, I likely wouldn’t still have my finger!
Dream clients! We have to sedate 90% of our large birds to do anything to them. Even to just do an examination. I always push for bloodwork and x rays while we have them down to make it count a little more than just a physical 😅
I think people don't think about it or don't realize it's something they can do. Working with your pet beforehand to make exam type motions less scary makes things less stressful for everyone involved in vet visits! I watch a lot of zoo and shows, and I love that they train their animals to perform exam behaviors by choice. I also love Lori Torrini's channel- if she can train snakes to do things like get on a scale, I think most people can do it with their pet! I also know from the vet shows how dangerous sedation can be :
This was a great video thank you, I'm glad your baby is ok. This was amazingly timed as I've been having some medical issues with my little puppy, recently and have been very worried and vetting him too. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, for both.
I about cried when Cheyenne voiced her displeasure at having a sample taken. I've never heard her make a sound like that before, and you know what? I dont like that happening to me either girl.
This is the second video that I've watched where a blue and yellow Macaw goes to the vet. I think I may be a bird person. In any case, I'm glad your bird is okay.
Cheyenne video!!! YAS! Best birb in the world ... sorry to my caiques, but she is just so well behaved, x'D Also I think this is the first time we have seen her actually being loud? Like she always just mumbles and whispers.
Chayenne is sutch a good girl at the Vet. And i kind of got a answer to my question ready....😁 I wanted to know if Chayenne ever screems louder then just the very cute squeeks & Squaks when she sits on your sholder. 😊 A friend of mine had a afrikan grey and that one whas super loud. They had to give her up becaurse he screemed the whole day and stressed out the Baby.
Can I just say how unique this video is? The vet's name: Dr. Plantz The clinic's name: Homey Gnome The clinic: actually has gnomes Cheyenne: wearing a sweater I'm glad the lump isn't serious. More good health to Cheyenne next year and for many more years to come!
Cheyenne actually most of the time wears sweaters now!! Some fan made her some. To keep her naked chicken body warmish. It took her a while to get used to it and she ripped a few but it also helps to not pull out those feathers
Cheyenne is such a sweet bird. She’s so tolerant. Not many birds would be that good with all that handling and uncomfortable moving around. Especially with a stranger in a strange place. It just shows how much Emily and Ed work with Cheyenne and socialize her. She’s such a sweet bird.
You’re very lucky to have multiple exotic vets nearby. Not everyone can find _one_ within a reasonable distance. We definitely need more exotic vets in the world. ETA: I love that the clinic is called Homey Gnome! Lol.
Right, when I had pet rats there were no exotic vets in my area. I convinced my dogs’ vet to see them because he had experience with rodents from back in the day before vet practice was divided up like it is now. But that vet wasn’t comfortable doing surgery or anything like that. If my rats had needed surgery, the nearest vet was a 3-4 hour drive away. And once we got a single exotic vet, he charged three times what vets in big cities charged because he had no competition. I wish there were more exotic vets and that there were more that specifically specialized in reptiles or birds.
We used to have to drive an hour to see one for my friends rabbits. Thankfully there's now a newer clinic MUCH closer to where she lives. I never wanna have to make that hour long drive with an emergency sick bunny ever again!
I'm fortunate that there is an exotic vet close by. They do normal vet appointments too, but they have specific vet in there just for exotics. They were our go to vet when they were right up the road, but now they're 30 minutes across town without traffic. So we recommend them to everyone, but only go for our exotics
She's such a good girl! New place, pokes and prods, and needles, oh my. Nothing but just a couple (well deserved) squawks no bites, claws, smacks, she was a total angel.
From not loving the sweaters to complaining when someone messes with them... Cheyenne is such a sweetie with a very complex personality! Glad it wasn't anything serious, just love her!x
The panic I felt reading the notification and the reading the description that she's alright. Absolutely unequivocally worried I got. So glad she's alright and its nothing to worry over.
My b&g had a large feather cyst. The vet said it wasn't worth putting her under surgery since it didn't bother her. Like your vet said. My girl eventually popped it herself and she removed most of the impaction and then after talking to my vet I was able to remove the rest and it was perfectly fine. It wasn't bloody or anything and the loose skin shrunk down.
She was such a good girl at the vet, I’m surprised how calm she is when you hold her or stretch her wings out. I hope that it doesn’t cause any issues with her health :) EDIT: wow! thanks for all the likes guys ^^
You can tell how much the vet knows about birds by the questions she asks. Always respectful too, you can tell when she asked about the plucking that she didn't come from a place of judgement and knew that it might not be due to ed and Emily
My sympathies, Cheyenne. I get skin cysts all the time and they are annoying and unpleasant. I can't get over how well behaved and sweet she was for the vet. Anybody who looks at her can see she's well loved and living a great life. She's such a beautiful girl. Also kudos to the Vet and that clinic. She was so wonderful and pleasant. When I saw her jacket I finally got why there were a ton of gnomes. Could you guys get the story from her of why the clinic is named that? I'm so curious.
I have a few little ones right now that keep getting inflamed and they are annoying for sure...my mom has lots of cysts and lipomas, so I knew it was coming eventually.
Poor Cheyenne. Naked and lumpy. So glad it wasn't anything too serious. We had a basset hound that the older he got the more cysts he had. Once a year we'd have the vet put him under and get as many as they could in one go before they grew back. His nickname was Mr. Gravy because of how lumpy he got.
That’s such a perfect nickname 😄! My dog often does little barks under his breath, and that combined with the fact that he came from a shelter inspired me to refer to him as my “used subwoofer” ☺️… he’s also a tripod, and his adoption fee was slightly reduced, so I also often joke about how I got the “broken dog discount.” Poor Guy, nobody takes him seriously!
This reminds me of when I had to take my step father's dog to the vet. I was never the one who took the dogs to the vet so he was so perky going to the "post office" until we made a turn. He couldn't see outside but he knew instantly and he was very upset.
silly bird, she is wonderfully behaved tho, im used to birds freaking out at the vet, but with her going places with you, im not surprised how calm she is
Cheyenne is the most behaved bird I’ve ever seen 😭 most birds especially other Macaws and parakeets/budgies/lovebirds/ always want to murder us. Cheyenne needs to chat with the other birds and tell them it’s all gonna be okay.
I used to breed Canarys. Sometimes they would get feather lumps. I’d do just what you were doing, warm compresses as well as a few drops of vitimin E oil. It was enough to soften them up and they would work their way out.
She was so mad 😂 I bet she threw a fit when you guys got home. I’m glad she’s okay! My dog had a pimple on his head and freaked out at first but nope just a pimple haha
I remember when we brought my grandma's parrots to the vet, they were super anxious to be anywhere other than home. To combat this, we put them in a shoebox (with breathing holes) and they immediately chilled out. It was bedtime. I always found it hilarious how they instantly went from panic-mode to nap time.
Aww what a sweat baby. Birds are my passion and I’m go glad you guys got that dealt with, I’ve met with this same vet with Doug and it was great! My caique got a blood feather a few weeks ago and sadly it was too thick to me get dealt with but luckily he’s alright now and we’re trying to take him our more and lower stress levels. To give context me and my family is moving so he’s in a very small cage and whilst I’m at school he isn’t getting out enough so luckily we’re fixing that. hoping that will help with the blood feather situations!
This was adorable. It was definitely time for a Cheyenne video. I definitely do not live a life where I could have a bird- much less a parrot. So I really enjoyed this. She’s so sweet and has amazing caretakers.
I don't remember you ever mentioning it in a video but I was wondering if Cheyenne likes Showers or not? if so and if your shower head has a mist setting you can close the bathroom door and give her a steam bath that would let warmth soak in to her skin and feathers. This is just an idea, and not me trying to tell you what to do sorry if it comes across that way.
Could you talk more about the bird hormonal stuff? You mentioned it's bad to pet her whole body, and something about a cave? I don't understand, but I'd love to watch a video on it!
im not sd but from what i know petting a bird in certain places close to their reproductive organs (which are on their back under their wings) can trigger hormonal changes and behaviours, the cave may have something to do with her nesting instinct? sorry if im wrong, im going off what I know from my male IRN, female BGMs may be different edit:wording
I've never heard about petting or caves/nests making birds hormonal (I've never had a bird). Would you ever do a video starring Cheyenne about the subject?
i have a genuine fear of birds and just looking at photos of birds starts to freak me out but these videos make it a little less scary learning about birds. my best friend has a bird and i feel bad when she cant let him out when im there and these videos are my beginning to exposure therapy.
Sorry if this comment comes across as rude or ignorant, but it's just a thought/concern. These birds are possibly terrified and stressed being surrounded by so many reptiles, especially snakes? Maybe they can smell them or something? Our Umbrella Cockatoo "Charlie" screams bloody murder if he so much as catches a glimpse of a reptile on the TV. Especially snakes and snake eyes. It's like a blood curdling screech and terrified wing flapping. I imagine it's a natural instict as snakes eat birds, baby birds and bird eggs. Again, just a thought/concern and I'm guessing I'm probably wrong because you're the experts. I'm not judging, our Charlie is a serious feather plucker too. I think you guys are wonderful 💕💜💕
@Snake Discovery noticed a little of the new house at the end of this video, did we ever get a new house tour? your old home was such a big part of your channel before your facility.
I have a macaw of my own, but he's nowhere near as old as Cheyenne and I haven't had him for nearly as long as you've had her- only about two and a half years now. Her temperament is incredible and she's such a sweetheart! I'm so glad she has a comfortable, loving and safe home. I hope she lives a lifetime full of happiness and never wants for anything.
Cheyenne was definitely not amused by this as she kept slowly walking away towards the wall until Emily just picked her right back up and put her back down on the little towel XD She did so good tho!!
I have a skull bump on one side that's been there forever too! I thought i just hit my head super hard when i was small and somehow my parents didn't know. Turns out, I'm actually a parrot
Those can get real nasty if it gets infected. I'd be watching her so she doesn't start trying to preen the area. That can cause inflammation and it can get real gross.
