Bristol Lost Underground Waterways

I got myself a s i b boat in order to be able to explore some some of those hard to get to places. I thought a good place to start would be Bristol Underground tunnel network of waterways and lost rivers which are now covered up by the city streets. Some of these tunnels used to be access ways to get goods into the town Centre and a rumoured to be be slave Tunnels and also no pirate smuggler tunnels. The main tunnel we're looking at has been explored by some other people in the past but we are hoping to go beyond and the point that a lot of people stop out and explore into the distant reaches beneath Bristol in future videos.

Great video, This type of video is my favorite seeing all the water ways of the UK. Being from the USA we don't have anything like that, yes we have the Mississippi River and Sacramento River, and a lot more but nothing like what you have. I have heard about Hundreds of miles of underground Rivers and Roman Acquaducts. I will never be able to go to the UK and see them for myself. So thanks for the video and I hope you do more like this.

Yes we do but not underground. Visit Michigan sometime, waterways everywhere both around the shores and all over the interior of the state. I live on a lake spur of three waterways. 👍

@@AlpacaMade I'm from Grand Rapids and I know you tell the truth because it's not called the wettest state in the USA for nothing. Thousands of lakes and waterways. And yes, we do have underground lakes and rivers because of the salt mines but also a few natural ones too. Good to see another Michigander.

I'd be more worried about being spotted by the public -- when they see someone even a millimeter out of bounds from what is considered normal / mundane they turn into secret agent men and women; eager to tattle-tale , save the day and murder any traces of fun being had. ;)

Risky!! Thanks Guys!!! How do we donate for life jackets!?!?!? I think you really need a Canadian if you can find one on the cheap. I mean Canadian kayak, not a Canadian Citizen, where one sits up front and the other aft, both with half length single blade paddles, and life jackets, you can probably mount your e-outbord to it. I would avoid single seat kayaks, I did a lot of kayaking when I was younger and we had to practice emergency escapes and other life saving stuff weekly in a swimming pool before being let loose in open water. Despite all that I almost drown exploring caves at Flamborough Head during a rough Boxing Day trip back in the 90s, luckily the memory items kicked in as did the teamwork and I'm still here 30 years later. Sorry to sound like your Dad!

I've never been to Bristol but found it very interesting and ended up doing a bit of research. On Google street view, I managed to find both the tunnel entrance and the old wooden door. Considering that it seems to follow the outline of the castle park, my first thought is that it is the old castle moat covered up. And could the fast running water possibly be the river Frome, that disappears next to Wellington Rd. and reemerges through a "fence" next to the pier at Bristol City Centre Landing? By comparing maps of the city from the 1400s and forward this seems to match up really well.

I think the opening by Bristol Bridge is the access gate to a wine cellar - from the days before WWII and the severe bombings when Castle Green was still the main commercial area of Bristol. If you look at High Street opposite St Nicholas Street on Google Maps there is listed "Medieval Vaults" which is an access door to cellars (looks like a stone square bell shaped building with a door). It is said that more probably still exist but were buried under the rubble after the air raids where Castle Green is now. There may be another one by the church ruins as well, although that may be another access gate to the Frome like the one you came out of.

@@PaulNiblett The Frome is the actual river in front of the Hippodrome which is now covered over. I think it always travelled that route into the original Avon (now the floating docks) but has since been heavily culverted - it now flows alongside the original Frome on the other side from the Hippodrome and exits into the "cut" just along from the Bathurst Basin blocked gate on Cumberland Road.

Nice one Matt don't forget your fishing gear and remember the police do have boats as well (speedboats) with guns so no speeding it's 5mph on some rivers and canels
@TheSecretVault
@TheSecretVault 4 года назад
I couldnt have been doing over 5mph. The water would have been coming in the back. The angle of the engine is right out, so no speeding yet.

The content of this vlog was extreme to say the least, but the fish eye lens you used spoiled the detail & made this hard to watch, which ruined an otherwise good explore.

Theres only so many pairs of hands I have. One to steer the boat and another to grab and do stuff. I cant hold the big cam, hence the 360 which goes on a pole or on my head.

Maybe in next video, tie the boat up at the small round tunnel halfway along on the right and walk up that small tunnel (which i went through in the other direction in my video: Tunnel Under Bristol City Centre). Then, provided the water is shallow enough to walk in, turn right (against the water flow). I'd love to know where it goes. But beware I've seen the water very high and fast flowing in that river, i don't know why, it may be tidal. I was nearly washed downstream in my kayak to goodness knows where, and that was when the water was shallow not high (just round the corner over the wall you stopped at, dividing the river from harbour water). So walking upstream rather than down, and in shallow water should be safe but maybe check tides first! If it rises there could be a problem getting back! The water on the harbour side of that wall dividing the water doesn't significantly change height but the river on the other side of the wall it could do anything. Looking forward to next video :)

The bridge at @4:04 is the 'Bristol Bridge'. There has been a bridge here since 13th century and is probably what Bristol is named after (Brigstowe=“Place of the bridge”). This bridge was built in 1768 and replaced one that was lined with buildings as tall as 5 stories. It was super cramped and dangerous to cross, as you would get mugged. They paid for the new one with tolls. But once the bridge was paid for instead of removing the Toll they raised the price leading to one of Bristols bloodiest riots.
@P-I-D-D-Y
@P-I-D-D-Y 4 года назад
The 1768 bridge was designed by James Bridges (good name). Apparently there was a disagreement between him and the shopkeeper who commissioned it and he fled to the West Indies in 1763. Notice how there is a metal extension either side to widen it. This was added in the 19th century.

Yes but hwta a lot of people dont realise is there is usually a very good reason why i use music and its to cover up problems with the audio. Also I think some sections get tedious with nothing but raw audio. Many thanks.
