Clifton Observatory (grid reference ST564733) is a former mill, now used as an observatory, located on Clifton Down, close to the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol, England.
The building was erected, with the permission of the Society of Merchant Venturers, as a windmill for corn in 1766 and later converted to the grinding of snuff, when it became known as 'The Snuff Mill'. This was damaged by fire on 30 October 1777, when the sails were left turning during a gale and caused the equipment to catch alight. It was then derelict for 52 years until in 1828 William West, an artist, rented the old mill, for 5 shillings (25p) a year, as a studio.[1]
In 1977, the Merchant Venturers sold the observatory to Honorbrook Inns; however, they were obliged to maintain public access to the camera obscura whose ownership was retained by the Merchant Venturers.[2]
It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II* listed building[3][4] and is on the Buildings at Risk Register.[5] In February 2015 the Observatory was bought by Ian Johnson, a local Bristol-based entrepreneur, who was born in Clifton not far from the Observatory.
(details from WIKI)
Camera obscura
West installed telescopes and a camera obscura, which were used by artists of the Bristol School to draw the Avon Gorge and Leigh Woods on the opposite side.[1] Many examples of these paintings can be seen in Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery. The pictures which originated from images within the camera obscura he called 'photogenic drawing'[6] and were based on the work of William Fox Talbot.
A 5" (13 cm) convex lens and sloping mirror were installed on the top of the tower; these project the panoramic view vertically downward into the darkened room below. Visitors view the true image (not a mirror image) on a fixed circular table 5 feet (1.5m) in diameter, with a concave metal surface, and turn the mirror by hand to change the direction of view.[7] William West's Camera Obscura is now one of the only three working Camera Obscuras in the UK. It has been placed on the top of Clifton Tower since 1828.[8]
Cave
St Vincent's Cave
West also built a tunnel from the Observatory to St Vincent's Cave (also known as Ghyston's Cave or Giants' Cave), which opens onto St Vincent's Rocks on the cliff face, 250 feet (76 m) above the floor of the Avon gorge and 90 feet (27 m) below the cliff top.[9] The tunnel, which is 200 feet (61 m) long, took two years to build at a cost of £1300, and first opened to the public in 1837.[6]
This cave was first mentioned as being a chapel in the year AD 305 and excavations, in which Romano-British pottery has been found, have revealed that it has been both a holy place and a place of refuge at various times in its history. Although the cave is in limestone, there are few formations in the natural passages

Used to search on the footpath edges around the observatory for one of Britains rarest flowers, the Bristol Rock Cress, only around 2" tall it can be found alongside the footpath edges around The Avon Gorge, Clifton Down and Leigh Woods on the opposite side are internationally well known for their flora, went many times, great place for a day out, Matt is right it is a cracking place, sadly the last time i was there a young lady fell to her death from the bridge, very sad day where Matt showed people on the camera obscura walking along the cliff path on the top, if you were to look over the hedge that is where you find a lot of Bristols speciality Flora, only been down the steps to the viewpoint once but did not venture out to the edge, like yourself Matt I don't like heights but thanks for a super video, rekindled a few memories I can tell you, Cheers Matt, thank you.....Mike

Brilliant Matt ! I hope they let in for free . Over the years I have taken many Bristolians here who simply did not know about it . I am from your side of the Water too , came to Bristol to work years ago ! Everyone loved the visit and there is plenty more to do around there too. Park up in Clifton , where there are decent pubs and eateries galore , walk the Downs for miles , the old BBC radio broadcast in the old vertical railway ( check opening days) , walk over the bridge and opposite the end enter a deer park ! its an excellent area on a nice day .

Wow that place is so cool, I would love to visit there, wish more places in UK would spend money on keeping these places open and alive, because there are a lot of people that would happily spend money to visit them. I'm sure I've been to a camera obscurer place in UK but can't remember where it was, but not this one. That was well worth £2.50 to visit. Bet you would like to visit Jodrell Bank, that's a good place to visit too. X

I think we have six or seven Camera Obscura here on our side; closest to me is George Eastman House, Rochester, New York. However that is still a long way from me. This was fascinating and the closest I'll ever be to the alleged homeland, or one of them. It was also the best tour of anything like a real defense tower. Can you imagine clomping up and down those stairs with weapons?

Hi Matt I have been watching you video's for some time now, Always love them and well done at DAWS HILL great work my friend. I got to say you are the best and no one comes near you for good communication and skills , and exploring sites. Why did you delete some of the video for security at the biggining, what was of interest I wonder? Do you know about the cold war com's observation post dotted around the country also every town had a big towns had a bunker, as I used to live in Hastings which had one which might interest you. As you love exploring do you know about Pleasley Mill in Derbyshire it is a very old building and has a disused railway line running to Birmingham, the building has lot of spiritual activity which I recorded some interesting stuff on my phone unfortunately it's been deleted apart from 1 picture. Thanks again for all your hard work and great video's Dave
