The original cast of SNL in the late 70's was absolutely the best: Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, John Belushi, Jane Curtain, Glida Radner, Garret Morris, Lorraine Newman. Everything they did was hysterical.

I was reading an interview with Julia's nephew and they asked him if she'd ever seen the skit. He said she loved it and had it on video tape to play for guests. I thought that was pretty neat.😄

As a 15 yr old watching SNL at that time, I loved the Todd and Lisa skits (Bill Murry & Gilda Radner) and Rosanne Roseannadanna (Gilda Radner, RIP, we lost a great one there folks!) I would tape the audio of Roseannadanna on a cassette recorder, memorize it over the weekend, then reenact it for my friends on the bus on the way to school Monday morning. Omg I haven't thought about that in decades!

The way Dan Aykroyd wrote "The Blues Brothers," I bet anything that Aykroyd wrote this skit with a backstory where "Station Manager Dan Aykroyd" just got fleeced in a bad divorce while thinking that the Weekend Update employee "Jane" is sleeping with everyone in the office but him. That's what makes this bit funnier to me.

To be fair, this was on network TV (late at night) and was subject to the Federal rules on what words can be used and subject matter, and yet, they were able to do these types of skits and had us rolling in front of the TV.

That was a good one. I was born at the end of 79 in October so I probably wasn't alive back when this first aired. I've been watching SNL off and on since 92 though. For the oldest sketches, the Bass o Manic with Dan Aykyroyd, Landshark, and the Coneheads sketches are my favorites. Coneheads was a good movie as well. For me personally the SNL sketches with Adam Sandler and Dana Carvey are my favorites. I grew up loving the Wayne's World sketches with Dana Carvey and Mike Myers. Dana Carvey was and still is excellent at impressions. I love his Bush impression. Adam Sandler was great in his Sloppy Joe sketch and his Opera Man sketches. Will Ferrell was also wonderful on SNL in his Celebrity Jeopardy sketches and his More Cowbell sketch. It's dumb compared to the other stuff I mentioned but I also like his cheerleader SNL sketches. The Weekend Updates with Norm Macdonald are very good as well.

In 1979 I was flying Cobra Helicopters at Ft. Campbell KY. I remember quite well when SNL first aired. They totally broke the mold and pushed past the political correctness that has since crippled a lot of comedy in today's cancel culture. In the early years, they practiced an equal opportunity approach poking fun of everyone across the board. In later years the approach changed and was less funny to me and too often it seemed they had a political or ideological agenda to push. Some amazing actors back then. BTW, thank you BP1 for making the speech I had planned for me. You guys crack me up. Another great job.- Hawk

Back then, everyone knew it was a comedy skit. It was written comedy being performed. Nobody got "offended" because why would they? It's a joke. It's a pretend comedy skit. Nobody is serious about what is being said. This was the fun of comedy back then. You didn't have to think about every word you said because it didn't matter. It was a great time for comedy. The "Jane, you ignorant slut" was a running gag. It was how Dan started every rebuttal. After years of that, they did a skit where Jane was very angry for him always starting his responses that way......so instead, Dan said "Jane.....you poor misguided pervert." That was hysterical! I miss the days when comedy was performed this way.

SNL was a mixed bag. They had segments that must have sounded great when they were scripting them but fell completely flat. Then others that (I'm sure) were supposed to just be fillers that really took off. The cast would change after a few years. No particular broadcast. A few recurring segments were that 'hipster' Catholic gossip columnist & priest, Father Guido Sarducci, I always liked 'The Liar' . . . There were many others. Some were very offensive like this one. LOL!! Too funny!!

I was 21 when this show aired. Was it funny to me then? Yes! But the show has grown a lot since then. I no longer find the humor in a man scoring points by calling a woman an “ignorant slut”. Our tendency as humans is to remember the highlights and lowlights and forget everything else. While Jane Curtis and Dan Akroyd are OG SNL performers, I don’t think they can hold a candle to Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, or Bowen Yang in terms of being consistently funny, even if I look back through rose-colored glasses.
