This is the greatest song ever written because it does exactly what the lyrics refer to and almost everyone misses it. Its actually a critic of pop music.
Here is something that should also blow your minds about this song. The music is actually Pachelbel's Canon (composed by Johann Pachelbel) sped up and rocked out. Another "Hook".
Yep, one of the most enduring hooks across 300 years. Well, a defining characteristic of a _canon_ is imitations of its melody. Pachelbel sure achieved that in far greater abundance than he likely ever expected.
Harmonica solo was really something special. I played a little bit of the harmonica when I was younger. It's really tough to hit those high pitches and also change pitches that rapidly.
I was a little surprised that you two had never heard this. Perhaps it wasn't as big in the UK. Another huge hit for them is Run Around which I think you guys will like. They're a pretty cool band all around.
This song came out when I was in my early teens and I loved it then. It was more into my adult years when I really began to appreciate the use of a politician type figure in the second verse.
This is very American. Telling You out loud that You like mindless drivel & oh BTW ... We are great at mindless drivel & You are currently enjoying mindless drivel!!!
"No matter how much peter loved her, what made the pan refuse to grow....was that the hoooook brings you backkkkk" Excellence in irony and linguistics. Top tier.
One of the best songs ever. Seeing it live was pure awe I go back to in my mind again and again. Just for fun you should watch Emma Stone lip sink this track on Jimmy Fallon's show. It's quite a feat. Lip Sync Battle with Emma Stone @The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
The harmonica solo and the 'hook' were well worth the watch and the like👍 I enjoyed this. I know I have heard other Blues Traveler's songs but for the life of me I can't remember the name of one. Time to hit Wikipedia. 😁😁 Great as always guys.✌🤗
"To confuse the issue I'll refer, to familiar heroes from long ago; No matter how much Peter loved her, what made the Pan refuse to grow was that the hook brings you back". These lyrics are hardly nonsensical.
I was lucky enough to get tickets to WOODSTOCK 1994 (25th anniversary with Joe Cocker, Aerosmith, Metallica, CSN, Nine Inch Nails, Jackyl, the Crannberries, Peter Gabriel, Traffic and Bob Dylan,....among others) and this was the first band we saw Friday afternoon after waiting in line all day. Popper was playing the Star Spangled Banner just like Hendrix did at the original, but he was playing on a heavily distorted harmonica. It was amazing...I am sure it wasn't just the pot and watching out for the dreaded "brown acid", floating around the festival. The weekend was amazing, and kicking it off with Blues Traveler was perfect.
Paul Shaeffer from the Late Night With David Letterman (band leader originally from SNL in the 70s) helps John in the video, singing double with him at the last verse.
LOL Count on the Brits to call it a Mouth Organ, while we call it a Harmonica. btw... the political candidate standing before a giant poster at a podium is a scene from Citizen Kane with Orson Wells that was remade for the Music video and is about the real event of William Randolf Hearst the news Media magnate standing before such a poster while campaigning of political office.
I don't think you paid very close attention to the lyrics. They are not nonsensical as you stated but very deliberately speaking about the typical pop song structure. Id suggest pulling up lyrics when doing reactions. On some cases it can be very helpful. But I appreciate the reaction never the less. Hearing a song for the first time and getting all the layers can be challenging...
Actually you need to go back and read the lyrics. The first half of the song he lays out exactly what he is going to do. Then he says that if he's doing his job, it's your resolve that breaks. Meaning he can sing about anything and as long as it's catchy (the hook) then your going to like the song. So in a way, the song can either have substance via the lyrics or be nonsensical and it ultimately doesn't matter because the vast majority of people are going to like the song as long as it has a catchy hook and is constructed well. Very meta.
Esh, nonsensical lyrics? Not even close. Glad you gave them a spin though, since you somehow avoided them to this point. That said, maybe you should have had a lyric sheet up while you listened and avoided missing the lyrics which are absolutely a key part to this song. Nothing nonsensical about the words. Also, what is a mouth organ? Lol
