His voice is so dope but what’s even more dope is the fact that the lyrics is basically about him singing whatever he wants as long as it sounds good …. A genius
Hook is an incredible song, sang incredibly well. I love that it means absolutely nothing but draws you in anyway. Thank you to the requester, I hadn’t listened to it in a long time :)
it has a meaning, but it can only be understood by musicians. it's hard to explain *fully* but the lyrics seem like a half-nonsense song about powerful attraction to someone. but they are a meta-statement to other musicians about the importance of memorable musical lines when composing and performing, the actual words just need to be poetic enough to seem profound. and to hammer the point home the chord progression for the song is Pachelbel's Canon in D major, transcribed to A major. the piece is 300+ years old and i *guarantee* you would recognize it. that's how powerful it's hook is. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NlprozGcs80.html&ab_channel=diemauerdk
@@AK00777 One of my favorites. I remember seeing him on some late night show, and I didn't know he lost all that weight. And my first thought was "damn shame the original singer died, but these guys were so lucky to find someone who can sing like JP and play harmonica like JP"... had no idea it was the same guy.
@@st0n3p0ny oohhh, I totally misunderstood your comment, so sorry. It was shocking to him after the weight loss. Are they still making new music? I haven't kept up with them.
@@AK00777 sarcasm gets lost in RU-vid comments, no worries. Don't think I've heard anything new from them in ages. Would love to see those Home Free acapella guys cover some Blues Traveler. One of them does a crazy "beat box" harmonica, like magic. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--ew_bfFvros.html
The other duty recognized is Paul Schafer. He Was David Letterman's music guy and is just a prominent musician. Definitely check out more blues traveler. The unfortunate part about this video is that they were trying hard not to show him too much because of his size - it wasn't as attractive. But the dude can sing and play harmonica just like that in real life he is amazing
Saw em live... Wanted to go home, burn my guitar and drink bleach... and I didn't see them in their heyday neither... Popper sings... Idk wtf I'm doing... His harmonica is insane live
Ohhhh here we go, now we're talking. What a great request. Damn I love this band. I randomly discovered John Popper's incredible harmonica version of Star Spangled Banner 10 or 15 years ago, realized he was part of Blues Traveler and got instantly hooked on their stuff. Got to see them in Toronto a few years back and they blew my socks off.
The guy on the couch in his boxers was friend of the band Keith Ober, comedian turned game show host, he was the host of MTV's first big games show "Remote Control" where Adam Sandler, Colin Quinn and Dennis Leary all got their start in show biz. Kieth unfortunately died in 09 of a heart attack at 52. The little guy with glasses near the end you recognized was Paul Shaffer band leader and side kick for Letterman all those years on Late Night. You don't have to react to it unless you want to, but you should check out the live version of this song that they performed in 1996 at the Howard Stern birthday bash, i think it has more views than official video, it's a phenomenal performance!!!! Never mind, just saw you reacted to that version, watching it now Yay!!
I remember the short window when Blues Traveler was huge, I didn't care for them as a kid, but in hindsight they were (and I don't doubt still are) amazing.
I had the absolute pleasure of seeing them in concert at Oklahoma State in 2002. Such incredible live performers, they did a triple encore because the crowd kept asking for more. An amazing show 100%.
John Popper is probably the best harmonica player in the world, and an amazing singer. Love Blues Traveler. This was one of my favorite albums from the 90s, Hook is taught in university music theory classes b/c its so brilliant. It's about how to write songs, and the music is Pachobel's Canon repeated over and over.
John Popper, amazing vocalist and harmonica player!!!!!! And the concept of this song….GENIUS Lil dude is the band leader from The David Letterman show Paul Schaffer
The secret behind this song is that the chord progression in the background is the same as Pachelbel's Canon in D, and is essentially the perfect song. A ridiculous number of chart topping songs are simply Canon in D with a rhythmic change. Blues Traveler chose to make a song using that chord progression to mock the music industry's ability to manufacture hits using it. Brilliant songwriting on their part.
I saw them live and they were really chill. They did a few fun covers as well. Poppers engaging and funny. And their performance was solid and they really know what side thier bread is buttered on.
Your love and passion for music in general and singing in particular is so infectious, your videos are just awesome! Keep up the great work, I'll keep coming back for more!
HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY to you all. Even if you're not Australian. Thanks for your reaction. 🇦🇺 ✌ I'm kicking back listening to your reactions. I'm lovin' it. 👍
I just watched Charismatic Voice react to this song and your reaction was so similar!!!!! You both noticed and commented on the same parts of his vocals. I don’t know how much training you’ve got, but she is a classically trained opera singer. My point is, classically trained or not you’ve got a great ear!!!! Hearing all the nuances
The goofy looking guy with the round glasses was on Late Night with David Letterman for years. His name is Paul Shaffer. If that’s who you thought looked familiar, that’s probably why.
Blues Traveler is not John Popper’s only band , you should check out , John popper and the Duskray Troubadours , the music continues to be amazing n wonderful
Go check out "Look Around" by Blues Traveler. It is off the same album. Some very powerful lyrics in it and a much slower song that is one of my favorites.
I found a copy of their first album on a blank cassette in my parents' basement after a party. It just said Blues Traveler and I had never heard of them so thought it might be a mix tape someone made. I played it and was instantly hooked
TSR from the looks of it you are gonna listen to this again. Here's a teaser you can't resist... If you wanna feel stupid, after giving this another listen look up the lyrics. This song made a lot of ppl feel a lil stupid. Also if I were to ever get married this band sings a song that will be on the wedding reception playlist.
I am so happy you got to this one. Yes I know it was the original video and I apologize. He does this exact song for Howards Sterns Birthday. So please look it up. John Popper is amazing and yes that is him playing the harmonica as well. He is a beast on the harmonica. Much love to you for doing this song. It was a huge hit in the late 90s but he had been around for a long time before that.
I first heard Blues Traveller in the movie King Pin.. Dude can play the harmonica like no other.. Have a listen to But Anyway for an example of great singing & truly amazing harmonica playing.. I wont put a link because our man might do a reaction one day..
I saw them a long time ago and my memory is a bit rusty but I believe the singer was wearing a vest or something with lots of pockets full of harmonicas. I couldn't believe what I saw that night. He played most, if not all of them and he was absolutely phenomenal playing and singing.
Let it play and really LISTEN to the lyrics. . .He's singing about how the 'HOOK" in MUSIC draws you in. And he, as a musician, knows that as a listener you 'll always come back because the "HOOK" brings you back. At one point he says, "When I'm down and need a buck, I don't rely on luck, because the HOOK brings you back." Get it?
From a story I heard the lead singer John Popper was discovered singing and playing a guitar and harmonica on the street somewhere, and honestly I don't remember the details and I'm not even certain the story I was told is true but if it is, he was basically homeless and performing on street corners to survive when he was discovered. But as I said I don't know if any of this is true, if anyone knows the truth correct me if I'm wrong or confirm it if I'm correct.
Love Blues travelers! Great reaction. I am looking forward to you getting into this genre. If you like Blues Travelers you need to get on some Sister Hazel... Also I sent you a DM on twitter saying you gotta check out Vanny Vabiola covering Whitney Houston "I will always love you"... Keep it up man your killing it
So glad to see this - John Popper has a unique and controlled delivery. Traveller are awesome. The video clip is completely random and bizarre - The meaning behind the song and lyrics explains this ! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uDx4zirhV-w.html
That’s fast part was genius because the melody and the fact that he is giving it a bone thugs n harmony type rapid fire approach hides what he’s really saying unless you are really listening …… Blues traveler is dope for this
I love how you fell for this song hook line and sinker. You got so caught up in the sound that you utterly ignored the lyrics... which is exactly what the lyrics said you would do.
The 90's were so f'ing cool man...........A dude with a harmonica leading a band (Blues Traveler). A dude featuring a violin (Dave Mathews). Canadians semi-rapping (Bare Naked Ladies).......Could all be heard on the radio. Not like to day where they lay some lines over the same sh*tty beat and drum track and call it "music".
Yes you just got a harmonica solo 😂 if you pay attention to the lyrics its almost a big FU to the music industry. He used chord progression from pachelbel's Canon in D, and more or less said doesn't matter what you sing as long as you have a catchy hook in the song.
