I think 2020 was the real turning point. The disconnect between celebrities and real people kind of hit the tipping point. We had Kim Kardashian self-isolating on a private island while riding horseback and we had a bunch of them singing "Imagine" out of key and out of rythym. Why yes, do tell us all about "imagine no possessions" from the $120,000 kitchen of your $1.6 million dollar house. Tell us about "imagine no heaven" while people's family are dying in hospitals and we can't even say goodbye to them. There's a fantastic meme that says: "We're all in the same boat! Their boat: [a big multi-million-dollar luxury yacht] Our boats: [Tom Hanks on a makeshift raft with Wilson the soccer ball]"

When my children were younger, we had several exchange students live with us for varying degrees of time. The one thing they all noticed was that Americans are a lot kinder and friendlier than they were taught to believe. The funniest misconception we learned of, was from a girl from Germany. I sew and I knit... She was astounded that anybody in America knew how to knit. We all found that pretty hysterical. They were also surprised that we cooked most of our food.

I've dealt with Americans my whole life. When Americans are alone, or a single family, they are very friendly and smiling. But as soon as there is a group, they turn into absolute c__ts. When you first encounter American xenophobia, it is shocking. I'm not fooled, those students were your pets. They brought you prestige and bragging rights.

The coffee lawsuit was actually pretty serious. There an industry law that states beverages cannot be served if it is above a certain temperature. But there was a specific store that had several prior lawsuits for their coffee being too hot. The woman had spilt her coffee or it tipped over in her lap, and she actually sustained 3rd degree burns from it. She only wanted to sue and settle to cover her medical expenses for the plastic surgery and everything, but her lawyers urged her to actually sue for a large sum and not settle, because when they settle, McDonald's has to give the money, but they don't have to take any actions to change what they're doing. By taking it to trial, and if she won the case, the court would be able to essentially force that store to make changes to meet the industry standards, or be shut down. I feel bad for her now, since everyone just sees her as the lady that sued cause she doesn't know coffee is hot. But unfortunately, it also sparked this idea that people could sue companies for any little dumb thing, so scammers kind of ran with that.

Just to clarify on the quit/fire thing--the US has universal at-will employment. If you are an employee, you can quit at any time. Also companies can fire you at any time, though labor laws do require a reason in a lot of cases. That said, contracts and hiring agreements can override this. Most don't though, in my experience. Two weeks of notice before quitting or being fired is common practice, but not a requirement in most cases.
@XxLadyxGaladrielxX
@XxLadyxGaladrielxX 2 месяца назад
Thank you for mentioniong this! Employers don't have to give you notice that they are firing you. Some people show up to work and find their access revoked; that's how they learn they are fired. People also don't quit that most in America since healthcare is tied to employment. So a rash moment of quitting means you are now uninsured.

A couple things to add to this: if you work for a large corporation, there are policies in place where you can't just be fired at the drop of a hat. You have to violate specific policies in order to be fired, and usually this requires a certain amount of strikes before it gets to that point. And this can be frustrating when you're watching your coworkers slacking off or screwing around all the time. Also the "screw you, I quit!" thing hardly ever happens. When someone decides they're going to quit, they either leave gracefully or they take the immature approach of just not showing up to work ever again without telling anyone.

Most Americans would agree that fast food is not as good as home-cooked food and definitely not as nutritious. The only benefits of it are that it is convenient, you can find it basically everywhere, and it is cheap. So, it serves a purpose if you need to eat fast, if you are traveling, or if you don't have a lot of money. Unfortunately, there are people in our economy who can't afford to eat out at better alternatives (at least not that often). So there is clearly a big market for it. I’ve studied the case. It was negligence in the part of the woman and the man driving her car (son I believe). The coffee was spilled after she took the lid off while holding it between her legs so that she could add something (cream, sugar, whatever). Coffee is made by boiling water and passing it over the coffee grounds. That’s hot. Hot enough you get an insulating sleeve with the cup. That Jury was as stupid as some of the jurors on the 11 week jury I sat on. In deliberations three jurors were voting for the plaintiff “because the defendant has insurance” NOT because he did something wrong. They literally said this in deliberations!!! Also the JLjury award was severely reduced by the courts.

@@OpenCarryUSMCthey car wasn’t in motion. The lady herself said she took responsibility for spilling it, but the real issue is that the coffe was way hotter than it should have been. The reason why you don’t see a bunch of celebrities in LA just doing “regular daily life” is because they can’t without getting mobbed. The McDonald's coffee lawsuit . . . you'll see a lot of people talking about the woman getting 3rd degree burns. Let's get really real with what happened to the woman. The burns went all the way down to the bone. It wasn't just burns on her legs, it was burns on her groin as well. To. The. Bone. This wasn't just slightly red skin. This was blistered and cooked human flesh which boiled when the coffee hit it. This resulted in multiple surgeries to remove her burnt flesh and surgeries for muscle and tissue grafts. She suffered long hospital stays. And a lot of time in physical therapy learning how to walk again. She sued only for the cost of hospital bills. McDonalds PAID for her to be made into late-night joke to avoid what they called 'nuisance' lawsuits and to stop others from coming after them similar events. (At the point this happened with the grandma, they'd been successfully sued and lost at least 6 times before for food and drink related burns.)

She could have lost the ability to taste for the rest of her life had she drank it so its just the stupidest thing ive ever heard to say its her fault. Also, teens may not be the center of life, but the reason you see them so much in media and commercials is because they are a major economical force. They’ve got very few financial obligations and a fair amount of disposable income. The only time I do open carry is if I expect trouble, due to the size and weight of my 1911A1 and the spare magazines. Then it forms a deterrent. The funny thing is, I still carry concealed and plan if needed to use the concealed gun first.

I think the context you are missing in a lot of your videos about the US is how big our population is. The US has the 3rd largest population at nearly 350 million people, so while it does look like "a lot" of people swarming celebs that is really just a teeny tiny percentage of people compared to the rest of the population. The same thing with fast food, that woman was exaggerating about having fast food restaurants on every corner, we do have a lot of restaurants, but fast food restaurants are reserved for main streets and highways or interstates- main traffic areas. So yes, while a lot of people do eat at those restaurants to keep them afloat, a lot of times its not the people in that town keeping them afloat- its long haul truckers or people traveling through just wanting to grab a quick bite between towns or on their lunch break. Even with the people who eat fast food regularly, again, it is such a small percentage compared to the actual population of the US. And our poverty is a lot more quiet than people being homeless, we have a lot of people who are "house poor" they have a house, but they can go into debt or are already in debt because they cannot afforded the keep up or taxes on it. A lot of Americans are thousands and thousands of dollars in debt and it is not just from going to secondary education, it is just trying to live. I also think that you keep getting one view of what houses in the US look like, you keep looking at these newly built suburban houses and thinking that is where we all live, we don't, the size and shape of houses differ all over the US, each state has its own history including sometimes the type of house. Also, that woman who sued McDonald's, she was an elderly woman who nearly died because the coffee was way past boiling and that McDonald's was given several warnings before hand about how high they set their warmer on their coffee maker. She only sued for enough money to cover her medical bills... but McDonald's is a large corporation with a PR team and millions of dollars, so whos story are you more willing to believe 30 years later?

@@PaperChives It's because people don't want to cook or haven't been taught by parents who shoved chicken nuggets down their throats all their lives. Home cooking is healthier and cheaper by far for any type meals and usually takes half an hour of hands on. Even cooking fast food at home is much cheaper than at the window. I make Schlotzsky's medium original sandwiches from scratch (no knead sour dough for 6 buns takes 60 seconds to throw together and it's done it's happy thing when you get home from work) and the cost for 6 at home is less than 1 at the window. Feeding a family of 6 at the window runs $10.29 each plus tax so $66.83 compared to $9 at home. Homemade pizza dough is pennies, $1.34 can of Hunt's spaghetti sauce, cheese and pepperoni or random leftovers and fresh basil from the windowsill planter would be $4 total for 2 the size of cookie sheets. Chinese? A pot of rice costs pennies and 2 cups of flour for mu shu wraps with drops of sesame oil also costs pennies. One lonely leftover pork chop with vegetables (lettuce or cabbage, a carrot, half an onion and 2 stalks of celery, 2 eggs, whatever is in the fridge), some soy sauce and hoisin will fill a dozen wraps for around $5 to feed 4.

@@SwarmerGaming The requirements for MCD at the time were that coffee needed to be KEPT at 180-190F (not brewed and then kept a bit lower, but actually served at that temperature). At that high a temperature, it'll cause 3rd degree burns in as little as 3-7 SECONDS. They had also already caused OVER 700 serious injuries due to hot coffee burns, so they knew it was an issue, but ignored the obvious, glaring safety issue because they thought it was such a low chance (compared to the millions of cups they sold) that it was an acceptable risk. When asked why they didn't even attempt to warn customers that the coffee was hot enough to cause injuries, they didn't even have an answer: it just never occurred to them. It's filled with tourists and once you get away from the touristy areas, you can find yourself in some really sketchy areas. I love LA and there are tons and tons of beautiful areas in LA (and California, of course), but Hollywood ain't it. And her comment about not seeing celebrities everywhere is true. What's funny is that I work at a major movie/television studio and I hardly ever see actual, real-life celebrities. The hot coffee lawsuit was because the coffee was over 180°f (83° c) and somehow it spilled in her lap almost immediately after getting it. It was so hot that it bonded her clothing to her skin and left her with third degree burns on her upper inner thighs and sensitive areas, requiring skin grafts and a stay in a burn unit. McDonald's didn't want to pay her medical bills and offered her less than $1000.00 despite knowing their coffee machines were set on an incredibly high temperature, and having been warned many times, at many locations by inspectors to lower the temperature to a safe level. She asked McDonald's to only cover her medical expenses. They offered her coupons. Took them to court and sued for two days worth of coffee sales and won. McDonald's counter-sued after that, stating the amount was too ambiguous and needs a specific reason for the amount. The amount was settled. She gave most of it away to her children. By the way, the coffee was measured as being "hotter than the radiator fluid in your car"

All she originally asked for was that McDonald's pay her medical bills it was McDonald's that escalated it because there were MANY similar cases in the past.

The coffee burned lady tried to resolve directly with McDonald's and she only requested they cover her medical bills which resulted from her injury. McDonald's declined. She felt she was forced to sue just to get the care she needed for her second and third degree burns but couldn't afford. During the trial, it was discovered that not only was the coffee way hotter than required in their standard operating procedures, the establishment knew of the temp being too hot and neglected to repair the device for a very long time. The jury (or maybe it was the judge? I can't remember) decided she was owed far more compensation than she requested due to this negligence. After the trial, she was smeared as a money hungry woman, so she went into hiding. It's truly disheartening.

The classic American breakfast-what we call “hot breakfast”-consists of meat such as bacon, ham, sausage, or steak, eggs cooked to preference, fried potatoes (often hash browns), toast, a glass of juice, perhaps some orange slices or grapefruit, and coffee, tea or milk for kids. That’s if we have time for a full breakfast. Waffles and pancakes are an option but less likely to be on the menu than the classic breakfast. Honestly, though, since most of us work, we have something quick like yogurt and granola, or a bowl of cereal, or even just peanut butter toast.

On the subject of Fast Food: In the US, most workers eat Fast Food for lunch. Some companies only allow 30 minutes for lunch, although some allow a full hour, which makes going to a "sit down" restaurant practical. Most people, especially families, have the evening meal at home, where one or both adults cook. One will find that Pizza tends to be a Friday night choice; burgers/subs/chicken sandwiches tend to be a Saturday choice for those consuming fast food prior to gaming. For those dining out, Friday & Saturday are the most frequent days, with highly variable food choices. Family breakfasts are widely variable. Some people skip breakfast entirely, or only drink coffee, some eat a bowl of cereal or fruit, while the traditional "country" breakfast of eggs, bacon/ham, pancakes/grits/creamed beef, etc tend to be the more rural choice.

About the McDonalds coffee thing...the little old lady that actually took this case all the way and got a significant settlement was 79 years old and the coffee in question was being served at a temp that they knew could/would cause severe injury. McDonalds had over 700 previous reports of injury from its coffee (including previous reports of 3rd degree burns). The coffee was served in Styrofoam cups that could also hold it to a high temp for a long time. But in this case the lady was a passenger in the car and they had pulled to a stop so that she could open and add creamer etc when it accidently spilled on her lap causing 3rd degree burns to this little lady requiring skin grafts etc to help her heal. Although, they were aware of the situation, as a large corporation they opted to offer minor payouts to the previous reported injuries because compared to the total number served it seemed a minor cost to them (instead of fixing the problem). So, I get it that it might seem silly but it was a legitimate issue that needed to be fixed and I'm glad someone stuck it out and made them fix it.

@@robertsanders5355 yeah, it's truly deserved when someone has a freak and tragic accident that could have been prevented by a company literally caring for a single second that their coffee was too hot, after being told it was too hot at least 700 documented times before. Just because this one company thought it was fine to use water hot enough to cause those 3rd degree burns nigh instantly, unlike every other company using perfectly fine hot water, that doesn't mean it's THEIR fault! No one with a brain could ever have an accident like this because no one has ever in their lives dropped or spilled something due to a medical condition, a loose lid, a bumpy road... Coming back to reality: I, having spilled coffee on myself before, would not think that spilling someone else's coffee on myself would give me INSTANT THIRD DEGREE BURNS, which I have never gotten even from accidents in the kitchen. That's a product liability. You're providing that product, it is LITERALLY your legal duty to ensure the product is safe and not harmful to consumers. "Can cause third degree burns upon touching skin" is not "safe" or "not harmful" to consumers. There was no reason for it to be that hot. There was no sign or literature saying that it was like 1.3 times hotter than the average coffee. THAT'S why they were found 80% liable. Where the hell did they go?" The celebrity thing is really depends on location, generation, what they're know for and, unsurprisingly, how attractive they are. Hell the word "fan" comes from "fanatic" and, as you said, you've seen videos of celebs getting mobbed. Some people, and it's not limited to Americans, are obsessive and some of those people aim it at celebs. But for every "fan", especially in a country as big as the US, there's easily 100 people (I'm probably lowballing) that don't GaF who that person is. Fast food: poorer neighborhoods often are in "food deserts" where the nearest supermarket is over a mile or two away. They have only fast-food restaurants and small convenience stores (often with no fresh fruits/vegetables), so that's what people have access to. Add to that the fact that people are working 40-80 hours at low-wage jobs and there's little or no public transit, so they have little time to shop, and if they don't have a car they can't get to the supermarkets. Some cities are addressing this by giving a supermarket a tax break to come in, or setting up a cooperative grocery in the neighborhood.

Our houses look pretty nice when they're brand new, and they tend to be larger than British houses, but they are usually built with low quality structural materials and there are a lot of cut corners. You lot have some houses that have stood for 700 years and are doing just fine; we marvel if a house is over 50 years and is still livable. If you buy a brand new house as a young person -- first of all, HOW DID YOU DO IT -- and also, it will not be worth passing on to any offspring you might have. PS, our federal minimum wage is $7.50, while the lowest living wage (let alone thriving wage!) is $25/hour, so a HUGE percentage of us are, to put it very mildly, not doing well. Our "average person's income" is wildly skewed upward because of our billionaire population, which is just out of control.

I had never heard of spray deodorant until now and have only seen a couple of roll on deodorant commercials in my life. My mom is from Illinois, my dad is from South Dakota, and they met and and got married in Texas where I still live. We visit relatives a couple times a year for vacations, but I guess maybe spray deodorant isn’t popular in Texas or the Midwest? Either that or it’s just because I’m only 19 and just hadn’t heard of it yet because my family only used stick deodorant. Can very much relate to what you said about spraying things in enclosed spaces though! When I was in middle school we had a PE class of about 50 girls. After PE we would all go into the locker room to change back into normal clothes from our PE clothes. Literally a QUARTER of the girls would spray perfume and although none of us had medical problems luckily most of us often complained about it. I would always come out of that locker room smelling like the combination of 4 different perfumes. People in front of me accidentally sprayed right in my face sometimes when trying to get their backs!!! Even when that didn’t happen though, the whole entire locker room became a giant perfume cloud and many of us would be trying hard not to breathe too much and end up in a coughing fit where you could hardly breathe!!! 💀🤣

Agree but minimum wage differs from state to state. In South Dakota it’s 11.20 an hour

@@NoraK32which is still well below that minimum living wage.

Aside from the courtesy of not using spray deodorant in locker rooms etc, a large part of our country (contrary to popular belief) tries to be environmentally responsible. Aerosolized anything releases stuff into the air that is bad for the environment.

Also spray-on anything isn't as popular in the US because of the aerosol chemicals that mess with the environment. I also hate spraying something on myself that gets up my nose and everywhere.

15:01 if you look up the story the documents confirm the coffee was just below boiling temperature for one. For two, the lids at the time were notoriously easy to pop off. Both things McDonald's knew about but didn't fix until they were sued.

As an American I can tell you that most Americans eat at home because families eat together. We love grilling out on Tuesday just because. I've hunted with guns, bows and snares for food. Great reaction 💯

When I was kid, my family would sometimes go together to a fast food place as sort of a treat. By the time I was 10, we had KFC and Hardees in our town of 8,000. When I was really young, the closest thing to fast food there was an A&W drive-in, but it was an exciting change of pace for a young kid to sit and eat in the car.

It's easy to think Americans are obsessed with celebrities because the population is 340 million +. But most of us do not really care that much, only 1 person I know is obsessed with any celebrities. I wonder if people over there are as obsessed with the royal family, because that's what it looks like to me. I have never been across the pond, so idk.

Most of the largest American film studios used to be located in the City of Hollywood, which is why people think it's full of celebrities but only Paramount is still headquartered there. The big movie stars never lived there though, they just worked there. Quitting and getting fired -- yup, for most people that's how it can happen. Most workers aren't on contract.

There is no City of Hollywood. West Hollywood is a city. Hollywood, and North Hollywood are areas within the city of Los Angeles.

@Reno_Slim yup, Hollywood was supposed to become a real estate place, hence the Hollywood sign (formerly Hollywoodland). Now the area at the base of the hills are houses from the Golden age of film that may or may not have stars in them but definitely still have history.

Re: Yellowstone being too crowded. Yellowstone covers almost 9000 square kilometers and spreads across parts of three states (and not the little states, either.) There are a few extremely popular attractions in the park itself (Old Faithful, the prismatic spring, and others) and on many days these can draw a crowd, but if you go for a hike (there are 1100 miles of trails), or camping (some campsites are only accessible on foot and require special permits), you can enjoy some of the most magnificent scenery on earth in relative solitude. The National Park system here is expansive and you should definitely take several days to visit off the beaten track. The Grand Tetons are pretty spectacular, too.

Our properties are (in general) larger because of how much larger the country is. The UK is about the size of the state of Michigan but has 7x the population. This also creates huge areas of the country where most houses have 2 or 3 cars and most of us drive 30 min, 60 min, or more to work, store, or entertainment. Concentrations of population have Uber and Lyft, but you need to be in a major metropolitan area for a subway (tube) or other commuter train. We will sometimes take the South Shore train around lake Michigan to Chicago for shopping, concerts, or such but most rail transit is regional... not interconnected like Euro rail.

England isn't that far off on long drives. When I lived there it took me an hour to get to work, and any entertainment was an hour or more away. As far as stores, they all closed before I got off work so I can't speak much to that.

The elderly woman who won the lawsuit against McDonald's for the coffee temp. She was on the drive thru, and the lid wasnt secured properly. When she went to take a drink it spilled down her front and gave her 2nd and 3rd degree burns.

A friend of mine is a lawyer and in law school they discussed the McDonald's coffee law suit. The reason the settlement was so high was because the lawyer for McDonald's argued that because the plaintiff was in her 80s the fact that she burned her genitals when the coffee spilled shouldn't matter because its not like she's having sex at her age. Their callousness is the biggest reason why the jury came back with such a huge penalty against them. As far as the ubiquity of fast food is concerned, it is a convenience more than anything else. There are people who eat nothing but fast food but they are an exception as opposed to a rule. Many people use fast food as a last resort, i.e. htey're travelling and need something quick or are out running errands and can't spare the time to eat someplace nicer or go home and cook for themselves.
