As a 79 year old American I have eaten a mountain of sweets over the years and consider myself addicted to chocolate and bakery items. I lived in Norway for three years and went without sweets most of that time because Norwegian desserts were way too sweet! Also, many Europeans I have known look at bisquits and gravy and say "no way" but love them when I make them or when they have them in a cafe. Jolly said it best: they are a warm hug.

People in the Midwest do not find sweet tea weird, we drink almost as much as the south, it's one of MC'Donalds best selling drinks and every food place sells it . And we also love biscuits & gravy. @ Kabir Considers, Clam Chowder comes in 2 types white & Red, red is Manhattan style, New England is white.

The vanilla does lessen the “medicinal” flavor of the sasparilla root ( the root of the namesake beer) . Also Europe and Asia think root beer tastes medicinal because they add sasparilla to their medicine. It’s the same reason Americans think artificial grape and cherry flavors taste medicinal.

People who say Florida isn't part of the South have never been to rural Florida, which is so southern it's scary (both metaphorically and literally.) Most southern states won't seem all that southern if you only visit the large cities, which are typically too metropolitan for much southern culture to survive. But I can assure you that Florida Man is out there, lurking in the swamps, strumming his banjo and eating a gator with his grits. The state hasn't turned red for nothing.

High fructose corn syrup makes pop sweeter than cane sugar. Pepsi came out with “throwback” versions of regular Pepsi and Mountain Dew, which are not as sweet and to me feels crisper(?) - my mouth doesn’t feel coated when drinking them. Also Mexican Coca Cola is popular because it is made with sugar and not corn syrup.

Depends on context: I'd proclaim simple sweet potatoes, perhaps with nutmeg if you're being fancy, for ordinary, mid-week suppers, and using marshmallows + brown sugar for feasts. The wife figures this concoction for dessert, rather than veg. (It may perhaps adapt to the savoury course, with judicious spicing.) Let's not forget sweet-potato pie -- Southern thing again; if you like pumpkin pie, you'll like the sweet potato version too.😢

Biscuits and Gravy depend heavily on who makes it and what sausage is used. In Texas, Jimmy Dean Pork Breakfast Sausage is the best to make this dish. It comes in a 1/2 lb chub and you pan fry into browned crumbles. Then, you sprinkle liberally with All-Purpose Flour and stir to cook the flour coating the sausage. Add whole milk and black pepper, stirring constantly until thickened. Taste for salt and season but don't over season. You have to make some homemade Buttermilk Biscuits first and when ready to serve, split a biscuit horizontally, add a pat of butter to each half and ladle the hot gravy over both. Grab your fork and SCHNARF!!! Jolly is right - it IS a Warm Hug, especially on a cold morning. Come see us soon Kabir!! HUGS from Houston!! Fun fact, Twinkies were almost dropped from Hostess the company that makes them. Either as a viral marketing stunt or legit situation where they were dipping in sales, Hostess announced at somepoint a few years ago that they would no longer be making the US icon and the backlash was instant. People were writng in and calling in to get Hostess to change their mind. So twinkies are like so beloved over here that even if the company says "hey we cant afford to make these anymore" and the people lost their minds. It was more advantageous for Hostess to continue to make the Twinkie, even at a loss than to stop and outrage the public.

Fried Chicken and Waffles was the lead dish in Mildred Pierce's restaurant. This nonexistent restaurant was the heroine's business in the movie "Mildred Pierce." Candy corn was what Norman Bates was eating when Detective Arbogast first spoke with him at The Bates Motel. You haven't been to an Outback Steakhouse in 20 years? You look like you're 20! My mom had a pen-pal in England who first came to visit us in Colorado when I was 19. She couldn't believe how many things, like in tomato juice for breakfast at a hotel where we stopped. She did order a beer at lunch that day and told the waitress "no ice," LOL.

To make grits you have to start with hominy. Hominy, is made from dried field corn which is blanched in a dilute solution of lye (potassium hydroxide) from wood ash) or of slaked lime (calcium hydroxide from limestone). Each corn kernel puffs up twice its size and the yellow hull membrane comes off. The hominy has to be washed thoroughly to remove the lye or lime. The blanching kills the seed's germ, which keeps it from sprouting while in storage. the last step is to dry the hominy kernels again for storage until they are used. To make grits, the dry hominy kernels are ground into sand-sized particles. When it time to prepare the hominy grits for the table, they are boiled in a pot on the stove with just the right amount of water until they have absorbed all of it and are al dente, just as the Italians cook their pasta. Put a pat of butter on them when it's on the plate.
@w.reidripley1968
@w.reidripley1968 2 месяца назад
Another secret is once the grits are cooked, leave them to sit, *covered,* in the pan or dutch-oven, about 15-20 minutes to finish absorbing water and mature its delicate yet satisfying flavor. Butter, salt, black pepper, and optionally grated cheese --- parmesan or cheddar are good choices. If you have to sugar your breakfast grits, those are probably inferior grits or po😅orly made. Instant grits taste of the box they came in. Get the grits you cook a bit.

Grits are made from ground corn, their consistency can be hard to define (as in calling it porridge) because some people like it more soupy than others. I prefer them more on the thicker side. By themselves, grits have very little flavor. That's why you rarely find recipes without something added. I am from the south, born and raised, and grits are a staple in my family. Some people like their grits sweet, but most prefer them savory. With things like butter and cheese. For me, my favorite way to eat them, is with salt, pepper, and plenty of fresh (real) butter; served with scrambled eggs and some savory sausage/or bacon. For an even more delicious tastes, cook bacon and add crumbled pieces and a tablespoon of the grease to the grits.

Sweet potato casserole, or candied sweet potatoes for some of us, are incredible if made properly. They are not an entre, but a side that when paired with a spicier dressing and roasted turkey can keep one from being overwhelmed by the spices. Also those of us that just candy the taters have more of the huge chunks of them than that of the puree of a casserole.

The chocolate powder used to make a drink which is incredibly popular in Africa, Asia, etc is an Aussie product - it was developed here and something all Australian kids pretty much grew up on (pronounced My-Lo, like he said the word, not Millo.) It is probably intended as a hot drink but we'd pile it into cold milk as it doesn't completely dissolve and you can then eat the undissolved stuff sitting on top of your milk with a spoon. Also nice sprinkled on icecream!

if you're making hot pockets in the microwave, turn down the power and up the cooking time. it makes them edible. the lower power stops the microwave from blasting it with waves and it cooks it all the way through. I’ve also traveled to the UK in 2009 (loved it!), and that trip reinforced my opinion that chocolate is much better in Europe. I’m pretty sure that the difference was the corn syrup vs cane sugar thing. Cane sugar is much better. I’ve also heard that beet sugar is used in some countries, as a cheaper alternative to cane sugar. I’m not sure if I’ve had anything with beet sugar. All these are great: Chicken and waffles, grits, sweet tea, sweet potato without marshmallows and maybe biscuits and gravy…that definitely depends on where I’m at and who made it. All the others are disgusting. Well I liked Outback back when they had lamb ribs, when that was removed from the menu, I no longer cared if they existed.

Candy corn is made with corn syrup and I agree it's GROSS! 😅 Yes, cakes and candies are also oversweetened in America. But dang, almost everything else on that list is sooooo good. Please do try corn dogs on your next visit, preferably freshly made and NOT from frozen/reheated. Pro tip: the best corn dogs are to be found from food trucks and at state fairs.

Milo's is from Alabama and they actually have a chain of fast food hamburger places that is pretty good too. They sell Milo's iced tea all over though at least in the south in places like Walmart. We don't have any of their fast food places near my house think the closest one is up in Montgomery think its more a northern half of AL chain. My house is right down on the Gulf near Gulf Shores and Pensacola. My other main house on the SC coast though they sell the iced tea at Walmart.

I love candy corn and sweet potato casserole. I made the recipe my mom passed down to me. Root Beer is the best, and until recently, I did not know you don't have it in the UK. Could quite possibly be an acquired taste, but once again, I never thought of that because I thought everyone drank it. I went to Outback a few months ago, and I think they were a lot better years ago. I got a ribeye steak, and the meat was full of fat, and I threw half of it away. Grits are ground up corn. I had grits as a kid, and I wasn't a fan. I may have to try it again as an adult. Cocoa Pebbles are equivalent to your Coco Pops. I don't eat cereal because of the sugar content. Hot Pockets are a definite convenience food. They are ok for a meal on the go We eat whole wheat bread over white bread. Ranch dressing and honey Dijon are the best! I love sweet tea!! You would probably think it's way too sweet, but I like it sweet. I have doubts about store bought bacon bits because they taste good, but fake. Oh my God, I loved, loved, loved twinkles as a child and teenager! I do not like pop tarts at all. They're dry and remind me of eating cardboard. I love biscuits and gravy 😋 I've been lucky to have eaten some that were good. I've never tried the Chicago deep dish pizza either and it looks really good. Didn't Jolly go to a Detroit pizza place in London?

I am Australian and like root beer (or sarsparilla - not sure if same thing, but taste very similar). It is not really popular here in our supermarkets but strangely enough I am able to buy it in Asian specialty grocers as A & W brand is sold in Asia. Maybe people in the UK could find it in an Asian grocers too?

Let's see what Kabir is going to be hungry for today 😄 Have a feeling I'm going to agree with some of this video. I am a HUGE Root Beer fan and it's the only soda I drink. Obviously I could not find it in the UK so I went for Sprite. Since I'm not a regular Sprite drinker I can't comment on the sugar content but I do agree that most items here are way too sweet. Also see nothing wrong with Outback (although I understand the lack of Australia connection) Agree with most of what he said except the Reeses. Not a peanut butter fan.

As an American I have never had chicken and waffles. I love mint flavored stuff. Mint chocolate chip ice cream is my FAV! Corn dogs...Eh okay loved them more as a kid. We have a restaurant here in town that has cheese bars. It is like a corn dog but instead of a hot dog it has cheese inside. LOVE! I love Twizzlers! Candy Corn I don't hate. HATE sweet potatoes. Root Beer...I like root beer floats. Never had a blooming onion but love onion rings. Cakes and candy...didn't know it was a thing. Never had grits. Cereal good. Hot Pockets..ok. Processed cheese...Kraft and Velveta are good. Ice? Don't like a whole lot in my drink. Fruit Salad? Nice. Syrup...whatever. White Bread...my preference. Ranch Dressing...good. Sweet tea may have started out a southern thing but is now national. I like plain iced tea. Bacon Bits...good. Deep Fried Festival Foods...the only one I have had is a Funnel Cake...YUM! Twinkies...meh. Never had Chicago style pizza. Pop Tarts good! I just discovered I can microwave them for a few seconds! And Biscuits and Gravy! TOP NOTCH!

Twizzlers are contentious, they had more flavor at one point. Now they just taste of paraffin wax with a hint of flavor like water with a drop of strawberry in it. (Not enough strawberry to flavor the water in a meaningful way. )

I'm a northern mid-westerner and maybe because I was raised in a family of German ancestry I only enjoy maybe 30% of this list. So, grits/bisquits & gravy; only if I'm in the true south. Everywhere else they don't know how to make them. All the heavy sugary stuff, no thanks. Hot pockets; give me a break and take me somewhere they know how to make calzone from scratch. Pop tarts; just smear some frosting on cardboard and shoot me. Kabir, here's something you could try. Two scoops of "GOOD" vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate syrup and drizzled lightly with creme de menthe. Taught to me by an old Indiana farm boy. It's an evil pleasure.

Aside from the fact that half of these are not considered disgusting by foreigners to begin with, there is no controversy within the US as to whether Chicago-style pizza is good. The debate is over whether it's actually pizza. And has anyone ever seen an "X tries biscuits and gravy" vid featuring someone from another country who didn't think it was maybe one of the best things ever? I think maybe when I've seen a PANEL of people, one or two were neutral on it.

Candy corn is disgusting, same for Twizzlers. I agree on Reese's those are nearly addictive. There's a trick to hot pockets. You need to cook it long enough to be cooked through, which varies by microwave. Then you need to wait the right amount of time, too short you get burned, too long and it's cold. Pizza? I've never met a pizza I didn't like, even if it's with anchovies or pineapple.

Will you cook things in the microwave you got to do it the same way as you do in a conventional oven and that is if you want to have a more even heat to cook it longer on a lower heat setting or power setting

A hot pocket is essentially just a pasty… don’t know why it’s on the list. The only thing “ gross” about them is the quality of ingredients…but I’m sure UK supermarkets have pasties that you can heat up in the oven or microwave too. And they are probably similarly “ gross” .

High fructose corn syrup is a real sugar butt on steroids. Sucrose is made up of Two Sugars one of glucose and the other part of fructose. Fructose is what plants run on, while glucose is what animals run on pretty much. The reason why high fructose corn syrup is used is because fructose is sweeter than glucose.
@spaceshiplewis

"Maple syrup" is not always maple syrup. You have to check if there is any other ingredients in it (besides maybe fruit, blueberry maple syrup is delicious) other than Maple Syrup then it is most likely high fructose corn syrup dyed brown.
@w.reidripley1968
@w.reidripley1968 2 месяца назад
The most flavorful maple syrup is dark. It used to be called Grade B, the lighter syrup being grade A --- but word got round. Now they call it something marketing-speak like Grade A Amber. Out of sugar maple territory we really ought to try sugar runs from other mountain maples and from box-elders, which are maple cousins despite the name, and long ago we'd make syrup from them. Have to draw twice as much sap, though.
@JustMe-dc6ks
@JustMe-dc6ks 4 месяца назад
Sucrose, table sugar, is a disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose. If you break it down into the monosaccharides it’s sweeter, also fructose and glucose are interconvertible isomers and fructose is a little sweeter molecule for molecule. So break starch down to the monosaccharides and convert as much of the glucose to fructose as you can and you have a cheaper, because you don’t need as much, sweetener. Fructose is a little flowery tasting or rather nectar is sweetened with fructose, but they’re basically interchangeable taste wise in food. Unfortunately your body is monitoring glucose levels to tell how to regulate blood sugar so it takes longer to bring it back down after eating if half of it starts as fructose. Sugar and fat and salt aren’t unhealthy, they’re just too attractive because you aren’t evolved to cope with a world where they’re always readily available in concentrated form.
