Bum, Fanny, Bottom, and Butt all mean the same thing in the US. Though Butt is preferred. Bum is more associated with a lazy person. Ass is more derogatory borderline curse word/profanity.

One of my relatives is a retired nurse. She told me about a time when a patient (who was from the UK) was getting discharged from the hospital and asked her if he could "knock her up sometime". She had to explain to him that he shouldn't say that to an American cause it means you want to get them pregnant. He apparently turned red and left quickly...never did get her number.

I remember Steve Irwin, "The Crocodile Hunter", being interviewed on TV. He literally fell out of his chair laughing so hard when he heard that we called it a 'fanny pack'. Couldn't imagine your reaction to being told that they were out of control double fisting Krispy Kreme donuts last weekend.

I'm surprised the word "spunk" didn't make the list. It would be considered completely innocent if an American father said "my daughter is full of spunk", but he'd probably get arrested for saying that in the UK.

Man, I'm so glad you watched this video! Listen, when you visit the US and get confused (and you will) don't be afraid to ask somebody what they mean. Better to ask then cause a misunderstanding.

My mom used to threaten us children when we we're little and we were naughty. She would say I'm going to spank your fanny or I'm going to tan your hide or I'm going to crack your butt. It all meant the same thing. One of my sister's got sassy one day and said, I'm sorry Mommy but my butt is already has a crack. And she got a worse punishment

We know that the word bum can be used for your backside, but we don't generally use it that way. We'd say butt or ass. A bum is a person who begs for money or is homeless. Bum's rush or bum rush is just kind of running up to someone and swinging, not necessarily from behind. Strangely, bummer was popular in the 60s and 70s and possibly 80s to mean something was bad. As in: "You had to stay home today instead of go to the beach? What a bummer." It's possible this was used more on the west coast.

Re: bum rushed. This term is sometimes used like “security gave the drunk and belligerent customer the bum’s rush”. Meaning they unceremoniously threw the obnoxious drunk out of the establishment like (you would do to) an unwanted bum hanging around.

OMG… this was a riot!!! As an American, native Washingtonian, have traveled/familiar with other language oddities between American and British idioms, but I didn’t know all of these! I’ll never think of some of those things the same way again!!!

Don’t worry about using the term “bum” - most of us have been exposed to enough British culture in our lives (directly or indirectly through others) to know this use of the term. And even if you happen to encounter someone who doesn’t know that meaning (again, not likely) - they might be confused, but they certainly wouldn’t be offended.

We say butt instead of bum. However, butt is not a word you'd use in polite company (not a "curse word" like the a-word, but as a teacher, I wouldn't say it to my students). We usually use bottom, rear end, behind, back side, etc. Sure, some people say bum to be polite, but it makes them sound British. 😉

Fun video! I really enjoyed it! I loved how you gave up attempting to prevent demonetization about halfway through lol. Your attempt to describe what double fisting means genuinely made me laugh. Although it is much more commonly used to refer to someone holding a drink in each hand, in certain context, it definitely still refers to what you described. Using that term can get a quiet chuckle out of one or two people because of its double meaning. As for “bum”, it is used to refer to a butt or lazy person more often than a literal homeless person, at least in my experience.

We know full well what hump means. That said, Hump day is a pretty innocuous term.

The most epic moments was watching you try to describe "double fisting" a "blew him off". The look on your face was priceless! Also the moment you were so exhausted by the word for one's back end. The problem with these phrases is that they have the same double meanings here. There was a time when all three made me blush, too. Well, growing up I, and through the years as an American, I have heard Americans using all of these phrases, the U.S. and British versions because we use them all. So use whatever words you need to and I, at least will understand you. BYW - the reason for the flower is because we use the phrase "de-flower" when a woman's virginity is lost. Peace

How about Fist Bump? Instead of shaking hands, you bump fists as a precaution to avoid germs/viruses. Not sure if the Brits are familiar with that one.

We know what a British person means when they say "bum" but most Americans will use "butt" or "ass", though the latter is considered more profane.

To know what Americans mean when we use any of these words it depends on the context of the conversation. A lot of our words can have multiple definitions, which is why American English is considered to be one of the hardest languages to learn and comprehend. What can I say, we Americans are just complicatedly simple if that makes any sense at all.

You need to see a GEICO about HUMP DAY! GEICO is an insurance company here in the US and they have hilarious commercials! Their Spoke Person is a gecko! Also, BUM can also mean: To borrow an item, with no intent to return the item. For example "Can I bum a cigarette?" Your word bum is also called a butt, here in the US. I'M almost 70,so I can't speak for the younger folks today, but I do not call my Country AMERICA! I would say the U S, or the United States! America to me is the land mass where you would find Canada and the United States.

As for flower... There might be some people who refer to it as that, but it certainly wouldn't be common. However, we do often refer to takeing someones virginity as "de-flowering". But use of the term isn't exclusive to females, a lot of us use it for both. As for bum, I think more often than not we use it in the same context now. Prior to the mid 80's I hadn't heard it used in reference to a persons backside before, but over the last 15 to 20 years, it's become more common, atleast in my experience.

"Bum Rush" actually comes more from a tactic used by less-reputable individuals (who many would call bums). It's more of a surprise tackle from close range. Many would fear that homeless people would just suddenly charge them and steal their stuff. So, it was believed that the "bums" were the ones using the tactic. "Bum" in my area is more often reserved as a biting insult, carrying connotations that you're calling the person "worthless", and might be perceived as a fighting word level insult. Additionally, "bummer" means something that's sad, depressing, or disappointing, or a person who's a killjoy.

Watching your reactions was hysterical! 😂 And we don't use the term "flower" for our lady parts. Most people are too prissy to use the the correct term so you ll here such euphemisms as kootch or va- jay jay. My personal favorite is "cooter." As in, "If you dont leave my man alone I'm going to kick you right in the cooter." Peace.

The whole flower thing is a poetic hold over from ye olden days when it was seen as crass to talk about such things outright.

6:26 We use the word bummer too but our vocabulary on "Bummer" is unpleasant, Or too bad so sad, depressing type of word. For example, a friend of yours comes in and mentions they lost their soccer game and they were so excited for that game before they got to play it and it (bums them out((makes them sad or down)) then you could say with empathy... "That's a bummer to hear that"

I didn't know fanny was front parts in the UK. I use bum for butt and lazy/homeless person. I'm used to switching between the meanings 😂 Loved the face when double fisting came up 😂😂 Use the term often with a beer in each hand. Blew them off is quite common phrase too 😊😊😊

We kniw what bum means in the context of a butt we just dont use it that way normally. Ive never called a butt "bum" but ive heard older people say it.

A lot of the sayings we know what they be in the "rude" meaning. However, americans can use them in different situations and typically everyone knows what it means by the current situation.

There are all several words with multiple meanings and can even be used in a possibly rude way. It all depends on context.

I first learned hump day off a tv ad as a child 😂. None of these surprised me. Tbh some of them have words that can have alt meaning... "double fisting" is for alcohol in my world but "fisting" is exactly what you thought of. "Blow off" not inappropriate, but "blow" absolutely what you thought of as well. This video was delightful. Aside from context, the maturity level of the person saying and listening will determine if the double meaning phrases are considered rude or not in the US. Pretty much anything can be twisted. It all matters how close you are to being like Bevis and Butthead.

I honestly this is so funny! We get drunk,doublefisting, on humpday. We bum rush random Fanny packs, outside of the Kum&go gas station. The answer to the bum question, we usually say ass or butt.

Slang in different counties is funny. Bum is not unheard of in the USA, but you might also hear "money maker" or "term cutter" or maybe rear end

The word flower is not used for that but has always been a symbol for it.

We have Kum-Go’s and I hate that they’re called that. I hear others say it to. We had Git N Go’s when I first moved to Missouri 32 years ago (minus a 4-5 year break)

Bum has several meanings here, a Bum is a homeless person or a Beach Bum is someone that does very little but hangs out in a beach, if you were to say "My Bum Hurts" it would have mean your butt hurts.

You have to remember, the reason we have so many uses for words like “Bum” or “Fanny” etc. is because we have so many different cultures here.

I have seen a restaurant chain all around the U.S. in my travels called "Fuddruckers" though I don't recall exactly which states I've seen them. I grew up in Alabama and my earliest recollection of this restaurant was from a trip as a youngster somewhere between Destin and Panama City in Florida in the 80's. The actual name of this restaurant was "Fudpuckers". Notice the difference in spelling. It was actually a "tongue in cheek" tourist attraction that had great food for a healthy sum. You had to walk the gangplank to get in over a moat that had signs saying "Beware of the Gators" . The bathroom's instead of saying "ladies and gentlemen" or " men and women" said motherpuckers and fatherpuckers. This being the 80's and me being around 8 or 9 years old, I had learnt to read by this time. I understood very well that " Fudpuckers " was a play on the word "Pud F*ckrr" which I don't know if y'all British understand but every boy and man where I grew up knew that was fighting words! Fisticuffs all out! In the street or schoolyard. But it was a little chuckle and novelty in Florida in the 80's

Every time I hear the term "fanny pack" brought up in videos about differences in languages, it makes me think of a joke I heard as a kid. Three married couples died in an accident on their way to church and found themselves at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter looked over his records and told the first man, "I'm sorry, you can't be allowed in. Yes, you attended church and lived a good life, but in your heart you have always been greedy. Back in my youth, when someone got blown-off, we would say they got "Shined". i.e. To Shine is to "Blow-off"

We understand and use "bum" as bottom in the US, but it's far less common. More frequently, we'd use butt, bottom, rear, etc. Probably the most common (at least in the kid-friendly category) is butt. And more recently, people have stopped using "bum" to mean homeless person because it implies they are lazy, but it is still used to describe someone who is actually lazy, especially if they mooch off other people (ie: "My roommate is such a bum. He never cleans up after himself and he's always late on rent!") My only experience with Fuddruckers is the restaurant, which is no longer in existence (RIP).

Probably worth adding to any Brit v. American rude word list is spaz. As far as I'm aware, in the UK, this is a derogatory term for disabled people. In the US, it comes from critiques of the the military, and means scatterbrained. Phoebe from Friends said it a couple of times, I think. "I'm such a spaz." It can be used to criticize others, but is more often a self-critique when you're making excuses for why you blew someone off or similar. "I'm sorry. I'm such a spaz."

Where I live "bums rush" means you are gotten rid of quickly. "Fanny" used to be used as a more polite word for butt but it's not as common anymore. Fanny, butt, bum, ass, rear, back side. all mean the same thing here. Ass is considered more vulgar but is often used for emphasis. Someone is often called "an ass" meaning they are rude or unkind.

Fuddrucker's restaurant chain went bankrupt during covid. Great burgers but they're all gone now.
