I think a lot of Swedes do enjoy a little bit of small talk in the right circumstances, but we have an enormous respect for personal privacy. You don't want to bother people as they go about their day, and a when you're commuting or whatever you just wanna get home, not talk to random strangers. But it varies a lot.

If you look into a classroom of Swedish 7-year-olds, there are a lot of blonde children there. If you gather the same people together when they are in their 30s, not as many are blonde anymore. My passport says I'm blond and blue-eyed, but my eyes are gray and my hair has turned dark blond, almost brown. Regarding muted colors on clothes, one winter evening I stood at a busy subway entrance in Stockholm and waited for a friend who was late. I decided to count every person who had a jacket that wasn't a dark, drab color. I stood there for 30 minutes and counted to 2. An orange jacket and a red one. One of them was a child

Same my hair was probably one of the palest shades of blonde when I was a kid and my eyes looked sky blue. Now my hair a medium dark brown and only hint of blonde is when it’s in the sun and looks a bit golden and might get a bit lighter if I stay out for a while, my eyes still looks like the sky just now it’s a rain cloud colour.

The thing is that the hair colour we count as dark blonde/ mousy colour still counts as blonde outside of the Nordic countries. Same with the eyes, what we call grey-blue or dark grey, they still call blue. They called me Blondie when I moved to Ireland, I've never been counted as a natural blonde in Sweden but my haircolour was still the blondest for miles around when in Ireland. 🤷‍♀️

Since blonde hair is so common in the Nordic countries we tend to only count people with near white hair as blonde. The more common dark blonde hair we tend to call mousy or light brown and is often seen as "boring" since it's so common. After travelling the world I have come to realise that what we call mousy/light brown, the rest of the world calles blonde. And then most of us are blond...

As a Swede I think we are kind of reserved unless we're in a situation that naturally invites socializing. Like I would never speak to a stranger on the steet or on the subway unless I had a reason to. We kind of have this thing where we avoid eye contact on the public transportation at all cost. I don't know how many times I've read commercial signs I didn't really care about just to let my eyes rest somewhere that wasn't were other people were 😂
@acire8188
@acire8188 Год назад
I am from sweden, I've got a dirty kind of blonde hair color and straight hair at the outer layer, while the inner layer of my hair is brown and curly. My eye color changes between blue, grey, green and hazel. Also worth noting that I can get any kind of blue, from dark/ocean blue to light/icy blue. In other words, I never know what color my eyes are unless I look in the mirror or someone tells me. Because they change frequently. Even mornings and evenings can be different. Edit: I just got interested so I googled my eye color changing etc. Found out that a lot of people with hazel eyes appear to change eye color. The reason for this is just a trick of the light. I suppose that means I've got hazel eyes but depending on the light they can look blue, grey or green. It also depends on if my pupils are widened or not as this can affect how the light reflect of your eyes. About 5% of the worlds population have this eye color. Brown eyes - 79% as the most common. Blue eyes - 8 to 10% Hazel eyes - 5% Grey eyes - 3% Green eyes - 2% Violet eyes (result of albinism) - < 1% Heterochromia (people with 2 different eye colors) - < 1% as the most rare. I just thought this was interesting so I included it in the comment.

I have something called central hetrocromia, it's different color around the pupils than the rest of the irises. My irises are light blue except for around the pupils where they are yellow. This makes them look light green viewed from a distance and a more bright blue or even vivid turquoise when closer. The green/blue/gray/yelow and dark/light aperance all depends on the lightsourse and direction of the light. One has to be rather close (an arms lenght at most I think) to notice that each eye has two colors. It's really rare (according to med sites on google) but I know and have seen several other Swedes who has it too, not just my sister and me. Could this be what you have?
@acire8188
@acire8188 Год назад
that is possible I think, I did read a little about that as well. I did notice my eyes changing from different blue hues and grey on my own. Late to the party but I had to comment about the hunting thing. In Sweden we love to hunt and fish, it's very common to be a part of a hunting crew, it's also a way to control the animal populations so they don't get too crowded. But it gets more common the more north you go, not south as in the US. Since most of our forests are north it's also very common for city people to join a hunting crew and go up north for the hunting season. Some people buy a whole elk to freeze and save for the whole year. Though it's hard to buy it as a non hunter since most hunting parties split the meat on the people involved.

I think Oskar was pretty incorrect when it came to the small talk question, we have a thing in Sweden about people looking through their doors to make sure their neighbors aren't around so they can avoid small talk, at bus stops you'll see there are two meter spaces between people and everyone is trying not to make eye-contact because that will lead to annoying small talk. As a people we hate small talk

I've been fishing lots of times with my husband and I've followed him when he's been hunting moose, I'm not allowed to hunt because I have no license but I'm allowed to follow him hunting. And he hunts with our dachshund named Smilla and she hunts hare, deer and fallow deer. Every summer my husband goes to northern Norway for sea fishing and then he fishes for cod and halibut. So it's a lot of hunting and fishing for my husband. However, I have never been on a sea fishing trip because it is too far away, it takes 24 hours by car to northern Norway and they are gone for 10 days, I only fish at home here where we live. We live in a small town in the Dalarna region by Sweden's seventh largest lake Siljan, we have a view of lake Siljan from our farm, a very beautiful view with the mountains in the background. So I fish in Siljan and other small lakes in the surrounding forests and then I fish for perch, pike, whitefish and rainbow trout.

I have blue hair and blonde hair, but not blonde enough to fit the stereotype. It was much lighter when I was younger but now it's dark blonde, and it's what most people with blonde hair have. There are a few people who actually have hair as light as people who bleach their hair but it't not common. For the small talk part I think the stereotype refers to making small talk with people you don't know, which I think is very true, and as for colours of clothes I think it's true for swedish fashion. Like look at Swedish high fashion brands and they will mostly have neutral colours but young people will still wear colour

I have sligly darker blonde hair and my eyes are more a mix of green and blue. But of course, when I was a kid I had really light blonde hair. It gets a little bit darker with age. Conservative clothing style I think is more in smaller towns and suburbs. In central Stockholm, where I live, you can wear what ever you like and nobody will care. I really like to wear colourful clothes, but it's really hard to find. If you go to clothing stores you see a lot of colours in the women area but in the mens area it's mostly black, grey och dark blue. It's not common to talk to people you don't know, but I often do that. Most people actually appreciate it.

I had chestnut brown hair and dark brown eyes (as very little I was dark blond), my sis had dark brown hair and greenish brown eyes (we´re getting older), our mum reddish chestnut brown hair and blue eyes (half of her family was redheads with a lot of freckles) and my dad had black hair and clear light blue eyes and a lot of pigment in the skin, chocolate brown skin in summer. No blonds at least 3 generations back and we are Swedish/sami back to the middle of 1400. For clothing I say it depends on the feeling of the day and what occasion it is, wedding, funeral, dinner with friends or just staying at home. Swedish food, real "old" Swedish food is quite alike all over the country, maybe not Skåne in the deep south because it once belonged to Denmark. Köttbullar, palt, pölsa, fish - puddings, fried or smoked, smoked pork or moose heart, grytor (stews)... I can not speak for the southern part but my husband hunts and we eat a lot of moose meat and we fish in the river. We live in the countryside (not many towns up here) and I grow a lot of veggies and I pick a lot of mushrooms and berries in the forest. We also buy a whole lamb or pig once and a while, better meat. I do almost all of our meals from scratch and bake most of our bread because I think it is healthier.

Swedish food is called Husmanskost. If you come here in the summer, you could first visit the beautiful green area with museums Djurgården (restaurants Godthem or Ulla Winbladh for husmanskost) or take a ferry to Waxholm (and maybe the archipelago for sunny summer days by the sea)to eat some fried herring with mash plus the best ice cream, or a ferry to södermalm and gamla stan. Restaurants with Swedish food isn’t that common but Kvarnen (the windmill) and Pelican on söder makes good husmanskost. And in Östermalm (near to where the ferries depart for waxholm) there is an old covered market from the 19th century, with all the salmon and Swedish food you can eat, but it’s a bit expensive. But it’s worth a visit.

I started out super blonde, but over time my hair has become mousy brown. My eyes are green. Yes our party mood definitely depends on the season and day. The colour of our clothes are a bit bland, but that's because we, as a people, don't like to stand out to much (i.e. we don't want all the attention that that creates) with black being the dominant colour. Swedish home-cooked food is delicious but a bit on the salty side and not too many strong spices, but we have been greatly influenced by other cultures' foods the past 50 years or so and have started using a lot more spices in our cooking. In Sweden it is the opposite of America, the people who hunt and fish the most can be found in the north where there still is wilderness. Generally though most Swedes get their food from the grocery store. I think Swedes are like most Northern Europeans when it comes to small talk. More in Southern Sweden than in the north.

He can easily eat them twice a day seven days a week. 😂😂 Me, I couldn’t, but I do miss my late grandmothers home made meatballs. Best meatballs I’ve ever had to this day. Tried fishing out at sea with my grandfather when I was a kid in his tiny fishing boat. So relaxing. Never gone hunting myself but have had meat stew from moose that my brother-in-law shot. So delicious. 😋 So true that stereotypes can’t be about everyone in the whole country. It depends on where you’re from, your personality and background/upbringing etc For example, I’m quite outgoing but my husband is not. And our upbringing’s are a bit different plus he’s from a small town and I’m not, plus our personalities are a bit different as well.

I have naturally brown hair, though I did have blonde hair when I was little (Like a lot of kids). My family all have blue eyes, I have central heterochromia (Blue, green and yellow/orange), my dad had green eyes, but they faded to grey-blue with age.

I have green eyes, my ex husband has blue eyes and our children have blue, green and grey eyes. My hair was blonde when I was a child, but it grew darker by the years. At 30 I had dark brown hair. When my daughter was 6 years old, they were 5 girls in her class with long blond hair and blue or green eyes.

I also have blue eyes, and lighter brownish hair. I was never blonde as a child but my twin sister was and her hair is not blonde anymore. 😅 I think blue eyes is actually (or at least was) the most common eye color in Sweden.

Fishing is very common here, especially in the summers but it happens in winters too. And some people like to eat what they caught. I like to eat what I caught, even if its not the best and biggest fishes, some people only cook the really nice fishes like rainbow salmon etc. The problem tho is that our east sea, the baltic and many of our lakes are polluted so you are not supposed to eat fish from them more then once a month. But I mean how often is it summer? As you said there is something special with eathing something you caught yourself. So I tend to eat some fishes every summer. About hunting tho: outside of stockholm it is very common to hunt, or at least know someone that hunts as a hobby. In fact even tho we are 10 million people we kill around 100 thousand moose every year, because they would take over the woods if that wasnt the case. and we kill even more boar. So its common to eat boar, deer and moose meat. I mean its not as common as cow or pork, but its not uncommon.

I am blue eyed and have brown hair. I had golden blonde hair when I was a kid, but it turned brown during puberty. My husband have green eyes and dark blonde hair. His hair was almost platinum blonde when he was a kid. Our children are a mix, our oldest daughter follows my husband with green eyes and hair that has gone from platinum to dark blonde and our youngest will probably follow me since she has blue eyes and was born with golden blonde hair. Our youngest and I am also a lot fairer in skintone and has freckles, while our older daughter and my husband are medium skin toned and tan really beutifully.

I was born blonde as you can be. But from puberty and on I've slowly turn dark blonde and then brownish. I also have blue eyes. I am of Swedish/Finnish decent, with some Baltic genes. But somewhere between 50-80% of Swedes are blonde, no one is really counting :P

If you want to live in Sweden 🇸🇪 you have to like two things!...Sports and Nature. Everything evolves around Nature, following seasons, traditions and Sports. Everyone is more or less into sometime of sport and an average Swede is generally very Healthy and aware.

Well, eh.. I have blue eyes and.. well.. grey and blonde hair... You can fish in central Stockholm if you like. It's allowed, and there's fish. Smalltalk in Sweden is called "coldtalk" (kallprat) or "deadtalk" (dösnack)... That's how much we like smalltalk... 😊 Seriously, we can smalltalk, but we can also be quiet with someone without it being weird.

I have naturally light brown/brown hair and blue eyes and have dyed blonde highlights but my sister was born with super blonde hair and blue eyes but with time her hair has become darker (she's a teen now) so she's dark blonde now but most of my bigger family don't have blonde hair but i think all of us have blue or green eyes. Blue eyes are actually about 50% of all people and then green and brown are about 25% each so blue eyes are the most common

I definitely had blue eyes and blonde hair as a child, then it started to get darker and darker from my tweens and now I'm a mousy brown. My eyes can look blue in the right lighting but I'd say they're gray. Regarding the small talk, I think it's probably more out of politeness and a fear of awkward silence that I feel compelled to small talk. I genuinely hate it, though. Like, if my mum calls me to chat and doesn't have a specific thing she wants to talk about, she knows the call won't be long 😂 I always wear earbuds when I'm out on the town by myself to avoid people asking for signatures or donations.
