Literally, yes. America sold that brand of beans specifically to Brits cheap during wartimes when they had to ration and couldn't afford much. Honestly, I think we should be flattered that they loved it so much its basically synonymous with their love of tea. That brand is actually not bad, either, it's just unconventional the way they use it, and a lot of these foods that became the stapler for comfort foods is because of that need for any slight change or diversity in the diet, and it eventually passed down and stuck. Kind of bittersweet.

Oh, Lewis! There ARE Americans who DO love your nation's comfort foods! I had the good fortune to stay with families in South London, Bristol, Yorkshire, Edinburgh, Manchester, and Liverpool. My "adopted mum" in Catford (South London) was a fabulous cook! She was so sweet. She brought a cup of tea to my room each morning to wake me up. She prepared a traditional English breakfast, complete with beans on toast, sausage, or bacon, eggs, and a lovely roasted tomato. It was a feast! Porridge was also an option, should we so desire. She sent us off for the day with lovely prepared sandwiches of chicken, tuna, or egg salad, BLT, or some sort of cheese and pickle combination. I did try a marmite sandwich once, and I must admit that once was enough! At tea-time, we enjoyed what we Americans would call a light supper, served with a poached fruit covered with a delicious, homemade vanilla cream sauce. This was served warm, and was the most comforting of all the foods I enjoyed having during my visit. THEN, several hours later, we were served ANOTHER meal, much like what we would call, dinner! This meal was served around 9PM. Just in time to retire for the night on a full belly! At home, we hardly ever had four meals in a day, but this particular family did. Needless to say, I always felt well-fed and happy to experience any and all British (or Scottish) foods that were put in front of me. Which brings me to a funny story about my first Scottish breakfast. While driving from Yorkshire to Edinburgh, our driver told me to "keep an eye out (the van window) for haggis." When I asked, "What's a haggis?" He replied, they are animals native to the Scottish Highlands, that look like hairy birds." So, all the way to Edinburgh, I was on the lookout for these mythical creatures. The next morning, when we went down to the hotel dining room, I heard the couple seated next to us order a full haggis breakfast. When it was served, I took a peek, and I couldn't even begin to describe what I saw. At least, our driver owned up to the fact that it wasn't a cooked hairy bird. It was worse! (Sounding) I didn't have the nerve, then, to try it. Maybe now, I might. But, I would have to go back to Scotland to do so, as it is illegal to import haggis to the US.

Most of us think of "comfort food" as something warm and comforting that Mom made from scratch, not a can of weird sweet beans dumped on wonder bread. Comfort food is food that beckons people to the kitchen when they smell it, like freshly baked bread. It soothes your soul. I don't think canned beans and marmite would soothe my soul or comfort my husband after a long day of work.

But Americans ARE offended. In the comments people are criticising baked beans on toast, biscuits and gravy, and both Americans and Brits are getting offended. I don't think either foods are good examples of what is good food though. I'm sure, as a Brit, that the best of American food is really good, in the same way that the best of British food is really good.

I was just joking saying that if someone isn't American, don't listen to what they say. Just some humor is all. Nothing offensive! Lol

It seems to me that these foods entered British culture during the 20th century when food shortages and general poverty were the rule. Brits made the best of it with what was available and affordable. In America we have so many cultures bringing their best.

Oh, 100%, that specific brand of beans made it dirt cheap and sold it to them during wartimes. I'm honestly so flattered that they loved it so much and it became peak comfort food for them. Bless their hearts, two things will survive the apocalypse: cockroaches, and the British with their "make do" attitude. Feels bad that he was upset over it, poor Lewis.

Lewis set some butter out on the countertop and let it become room temperature, put a skillet on the stove at low medium Heat. When the butter is room temperature and soft spread it thinly all over two pieces of bread. Put one slice of butter down in the skillet put two slices of cheese of your choice on top of that piece of bread and then put the second slice of bread butter up on top of the sandwich. When the sandwich Browns on one side smash it down flip it over and let it brown on the other side, the cheese will be melted and the bread toasted and it will be delicious

if it's open faced cheese on toast it's cheese toast, if it's grilled with butter and a closed sandwich it's a grilled cheese.

What you're talking about is totally different. The English version of baked beans reminds me of beans in Speghatti-O's sauce. Bush's are WAY tastier.

@@MisteryMan2000 yeah those beans looked more like our pork and beans that you get in the cans with little slivers of pork. Not too tasty but they would fill you up I suppose.

I mean in the south, people eat a lot of brown beans. Its the poor peoples food, lol. We ate a lot of beans growing up, bit ate it with fried corn bread and onions. Good stuff.

@@kristieherrera8560 Oh, 100%, those Heinz beans is an American brand that sold dirt cheap to help the British during wartimes when they were rationing and couldn't afford much. I personally love that we really pleased them with it that it's now a stapler of their diets or a comfort food. Also, I completely agree, poor Lewis, he loves us so much, feels bad that it broke his poor little heart 🥲

Middle school kids are very conservative. They say Ewwww at everything. I told them that potatoes grew in the dirt, OMG the ewww sounds, they don't even know where food comes from. Eggs come out of a chicken's bottom, ewwww.

I make a pot of beans and turn them into refried beans for breakfast. We eat them with eggs, bacon/sausage, and toast. So we end up using the toast to wipe up the egg yolk or for a sandwich and we add everything. It's a different texture than the regular beans with toast and we flavor ours with bacon fat.

We hardly ever even bought bread after my stepdad moved in. Literally everything in a tortilla. I've had a few PB&J burritos, and lunch meat quesadillas, but never refried beans on toast.

I think the difference between British food and American food is that Brits eat things that are either sweet, salty, or vinegary. Whereas Americans rely on seasonings such as garlic, onion, oregano, thyme, etc. which adds more flavor to the food.
@madeline5138
@madeline5138 2 месяца назад
Oh yeah, completely, I'm very hit or miss with the vinegar as are a lot of people. Personally, the way the British use their vinegar is what I like, but the way the south uses it I dislike. I think another main difference is that Americans, as well as a lot of other cultures, combine their flavors. Sweet and salty, sweet and savory, savory and umami, etc.

Have you actually tried British food? We use garlic and onion all the time and plenty of herbs also ... typically rosemary, thyme, sage, mint and basil, coriander (cilantro). I can't think of much British food that is vinegary. We pickle things in vinegar just like everyone does, and we put vinegar on chips and make salad dressings, but that's about it. I get the distinct impression that you don't know British food.

Many years ago we had a fast food chain called, "Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips." I loved that place. I don't think I've ever had any other British food before, but I do love Fish and Chips, so the Brits did do good there at least. :)
