I'm 72 and from a lower income early childhood. Yet I remember that my parents, with 4 children ; born in 1949, 1950, 1952, &1953, were able to pay cash for normal doctor visits, and only needed insurance for things requiring hospitalization. My father was furious when Medicare was proposed. He said that if the money for healthcare wasn't coming out of patients' bank accounts directly, then no one would question or control how much was being charged, and the prices would go “right to the moon”. Throughout human history, nothing that any government has provided has ever been inexpensive, timely, or efficient, with the two exceptions of war against people of other nations, and tyranny against their own people.

Don't you remember after Obamacare passed that Republicans tried everything humanly possible to end it or sabotage it for their corporate friends. And make it as difficult as possible to use so what's the surprise. They even took mental health care out which would have been really useful for all these nuts that keep doing these mass shootings

America desperately needs universal healthcare. It's a deliberate misrepresentation of the proposal to state that private insurance would be outlawed. Nobody should have to lose their home and retirement savings and major assets because of an illness or accident, but that's what millions of Americans experience on a regular basis. Just as an aside, I'll point out that members of Congress in the United States enjoy superb healthcare insurance paid for by the taxpayers. If it's good enough for them without being a socialist takeover of the legislative branch, I fail to see why it is anathema to extend the same care to the citizens that these people represent. The United States is largely innovative in medical research, pharmaceutical development, and trauma care, yet the average citizen, even with "good" insurance through private/employer-sponsored policies cannot afford the basics of preventative medicine and dental care. It's shameful.

If politicians were only made to contend with the same level of inaccessibility and cost faced by working constituents, healthcare reform suddenly would not be so impossible to achieve. It would be quickest bipartisan bill in history.

I work in socialized Healthcare in Indian Health Services. You should check that out before you go on talking about Universal Health care. You're not going to get the same care as congress, and it's hilarious that you picked the best possible Health Care in the country to compare it to Universal Healthcare! 😂 😂 😂 Universal Health Care means waiting for appointments for months to years down the road. Not having access to the care you actually need. Because appointments are so full and they're so few doctors everyone goes to the emergency room for every single imaginable problem, such as a skin rash. So while the skin rash is getting treated the silent heart attack is waiting in another room. I dare you to actually look into it before you suggest that that's what we should all have.

Don't forget that members of congress & the senate receive a guaranteed pension & lifetime health insurance regardless of time served, all government funded by tax payers who do not not have that same right.If they don't think we should have that then they should lose their health insurance once they leave office. Healthcare is a basic human right, no one should have to choose between food or healthcare.
@phoebewoodruff1101
@phoebewoodruff1101 17 дней назад
@@msdarby515 We already have to wait months for a doctor or dentist visit, because all of the medical offices are now run by corporate conglomerates. We have to apply to become patients. And then the insurance company gets to decide whether or not we need the treatment prescribed by the doctor. If they decide to pay, it’s only after deductible and copayments are met, and then they pay only a percentage. At least we wouldn’t have to choose between healthcare and groceries or rent with universal healthcare.

My father died in 1976 when I was 6 years old. My family had no health insurance from that point on because my mother collected death benefits from Social Security. We made too much money for health insurance and food stamps. Got paid once a month and come to find out, my mother had RA, so she couldn't work. I was 19 when I obtained coverage due to full-time work. Everyone in America should be able to have healthcare provided from cradle to grave. Power to the People ✊🏻✊🏽✊🏿🗳💙🇺🇸

The older gentleman you noticed during AOC's speech is civil rights leader, Jesse Jackson. He started as a protege of Martin Luther King Jr and went on to be a civil rights leader in his own right. He also ran to be the Democratic nominee for president 2x in the 1980s but didn't win the nomination either time. One son is a former US Representative and the other is a current Representative (both Democrat-Illinois).

All these things she is claiming Kamala is going to do , she has been Vice President for 4 years name one policy or one thing she has done. The answer is nothing. They create problems then that way they can provide the solution. As far as Democrats go, it means higher taxes, higher rent, higher fuel. Go watch a Trump rally or even the convention. AOC is a joke. I'm sorry but she was selected In an audition. Seriously! Yes , I am very happy ,I can get $4 meds. Yes, they are the party of the elite. I've worked on both sides I was a Democrat till 1999, I left the party because I saw where it was heading. I didn't like McCain either but I love his running mate. Please tell me how she ended up the nominee? No one voted for her, no one elected her. She was selected, put into place by the powers that be. Just so you know during the primary, when she was running for President in 2020 , before Biden picked her for VP, the Democrats didn't want her either. She had less than 3% of the vote. Now they want her all the sudden? It's amazing how you can be the worst VP ever and the next they have you running for President. Just something to consider.

When we had the chance to begin changing that to make it a more people oriented Healthcare there were a few who thought of profit first and killed Hillary's 1993 plan. Then, the far left went against the person who planned to guarantee much better Healthcare and a strong climate proposal, as they pushed a guy named Nader. That's when Healthcare in this country became so convoluted there was no way to make it a non-profit enterprise. Bush set things up for the medical industries and forgot about us. So, Obama comes in. And because he could not get all he wanted in Healthcare right away, the far left sat out, giving repubs the charge, in 2010 which repubs have increased, since. One last chance for the far left to get the point it takes years and getting the right people on board. But many on the far left thought they would have a good time not voting or voting 3rd party. So, trump came in. Hopefully people will finally get, if Harris is elected it takes time and the right people in the right positions beyond the presidency for this country to move forward.

@@Sandman60077 Yup, it was part of the Build Back Better Act. The democrats said they were going to take a lot of people off of medicaid and put them on private insurance and that would make up the difference. Nobody really understood how that was supposed to work since we all know that private insurance doesn't cover a lot, and definitely not enough to make up for 64 billion dollars. American here, we NEED universal health insurance. Insurance coverage here is tied to your job (if they offer benefits & you get enough hours to qualify) if you lose your job you may be able to continue your coverage through COBRA, but you have to pay 102% of the premium. Many policies have high deductibles that have to be met every year before insurance will pay, then there is coinsurance and copays that are out of pocket. On top of that many policies have a cap of how much they will cover per condition. Say 1 million dollars, which may seem like a lot unless you or a family member has a chronic condition, serious illness or injury then that gets used up pretty quickly. First, thank you for listening to more than one news source. You've made me like you again. Next, to answer your question: I've advocated for universal health care in the U.S. to make us more like most of the rest of the industrialized world. It's a bit better since Obama gave us the Affordable Care Act making it possible for more people to afford health insurance, the best he could do with a Republican Congress dedicated to making sure nothing Obama proposed passed. But we still need universal health care. And Humanity's assertion that it would get rid of private health insurance is false. Wealthy people and others who can afford would still be free to pay as much as they like for private health insurance. Responding to another of Humanity's points of misinformation: President Biden gave VP Harris leadership on many issues. She wasn't just a minion. Most recently, she was part of the negotiations that freed hostages in Russia. And Harris has made appearances, given interviews, that have been extensively covered here. The Republican candidate, in contrast, has not been giving many interviews or speeches and those he's done are just plain weird. Our medical system does need to be changed but the biggest change we need is for insurance companies not to come between doctors and patients. Insurance companies denying treatment is sickening. The delay in fighting for the treatment can cause all means of suffering. I worked for two different insurance companies and the need for profit was so great that we had to deny as many claims as possible. We would rush through reviewing 25 to 50 claims a day and look for any reason not to pay it. The on staff doctors constantly changed the rules on us too. They would take two random claims a week from your work to see if you paid anything you should not. If even one was wrong you were over the limit. The other company was so cheap that they would give you a flower in a vase for your birthday along with a letter telling you , if you don't return the vase the next day, they would deduct the cost from your pay check. I couldn't stand the companies. I went to work at a hospital where I could help people not hurt them.

If you don't work for a BIG employer that provides Medical Benefits, you PAY BIG for Healthcare. If you, your spouse or your KIDS get sick, you will go into DEBT and possibly lose your home to pay for it. We do NOT have a safety net for MOST people in this country. If WE don't take care of each other, who will? The callus attitude that you are "less than" because you cannot afford Medical Benefits is disgusting. Farmers, Bar Tenders, Auto Mechanics, Plumbers, HVAC Techs, Small Business owner/operators, etc. do not have GROUP Medical Benefits for themselves or their employees. We need something MUCH better than what we have. Too many Americans are under the delusion that the U.S.A is the BEST country in the world in ALL things. I love my country, but we don't have all of the answers and there are MILLIONS of people living in other countries that are much more satisfied with their way of life then most of us here are, so... there's that.

Presidential campaigns take about 2 years. For a contested Primaries you see debates usually starting in the fall of the previous year. Primary voting starts with the Iowa Caucus followed by the New Hampshire primary. Fundraising likely starts another year before that. Fox News is biased against the Democrats on all things political. MSNBC is the opposite of Fox. Do not expect fair coverage of the opposing party from either of these networks. I get VA care, so I don't much have to worry as long as it stays pretty much as is. I do think that healthcare should be available to all citizens. You nailed it Kabir. The VP's formal powers are breaking ties in the Senate, or filling in for the President if he can't go. Other than that the role is more ceremonial. If this was football she'd be on the sideline holding a clipboard or tablet while Biden is under center running the offense.

Instead Harris is now reaching a lot more people online and doing these road trips. Most of the national news media in the US is beginning to notice they are not the be all, end all of political discourse. They will have to change or keep doing as they have been to a smaller and smaller viewing audience.

7:22 RE: your observation about the marathon duration of the American political cycle. We are actually on a truncated timeline. Because Kamala effectively became the nominee by acclamation, there was no primary phase (the stage of the cycle in which voters choose candidates state by state) on the Democrats' side. American congressional House representatives (equivalent to MPs in the House of Commons) serve two year terms. Effectively, they are in a perpetual state of fundraising and campaigning. The average House Rep spends at least twice as much effort to retain their seat as they spend in actual legislative duties. In some hotly contested "swing districts" (those in which their party does not hold a wide majority), it might be much, much more. The abbreviated process by which Kamala secured the nomination has been criticized by the Republicans. They say that voters were disenfranchised because they had no say in the nomination process. Trump has gone so far to call Biden's departure (encouraged by prominent Democrats) "a coup". This is a cynical joke. First, Kamala's rise has been immensely popular. I haven't heard a Democrat yet complain about not having a voice. Second, Republicans never care about disenfranchised Democrats - especially when they win electorally despite losing the national popular vote. Third, there is no constitutional requirement that the primaries be part of the process at all. Election delegates are appointed by officials elected at the state level. Fourth, Donald Trump should know what a proper coup is. He attempted to carry one off in 2021.

I don't know anyone who's happy with our healthcare system, but I know people who are even more afraid of government healthcare than they are of going bankrupt on an illness or injury they can't afford. They think they won't be able to see doctors in a timely manner, even though most doctors already have waitlists. They think panels of bureaucrats will determine if they live or die, even though insurance companies already do worse than that by initially denying most procedures that require pre-approval and your doctor's office has to have extra staff to fight with them to move forward.

I'm an American and I think a universal healthcare system would be amazing, if we could solve the overcrowding problem. The UK's NHS is so overwhelmed and understaffed that you have to wait months to see a doctor. I was paying some attention to the recent UK election cycle and one thing I remember hearing is that NHS doctors are seeing patients get sicker and sicker, simply because they can't get appointments. Having a privatized healthcare system is expensive, but at least you can see a doctor when you need to. The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) made getting insurance cheaper and easier to get, allowing millions more Americans to get coverage. Both systems have their advantages and drawbacks. It's a matter of balance.

Heaven forbid we the people be able to take proper care of ourselves. Healthcare should be a right, not a luxury! ETA: I love that Kamala has had a shorter than usual campaign timeline. I would love for a shorter election campaign! It's exhausting the way it is now because it just doesn't end. As soon as one election is decided, it's time to for the next to start...for an election 2-4 years in the future! Also, there were Fox News anchors giving Harris's and Walz's kids crap for *gasp* being proud of their parents!?
